While not capturing the public's favor as did his initial foray into Christmas novellas with Christmas Carol "Andrew Sanders has argued that it has key similarities to Shakespearean comedy and should be seen 'both as a significant indication of the tastes of the 1840s and Dickens himself.'" as quoted by Schlicke in the Reader's Companion to Dickens p. 124. Despite the assertion by some booksellers that the £ placement on the frontis constitutes an edition issue point let me assure you it does not cf. Smith I p. 67. Period brownish-purple vertically-ribbed cloth binding with maroon leather title label to spine professionally rebacked. Spine sun-tanned. Stain to lower outer edge of frontis & engraved title with some transferrence to next few leaves. Period pos of "E. H. Lloyd / 1845". Occasional foxing to plates. Withal a VG copy. xiv 2 624 pp. 40 illustrations including the frontis & vignette titlepage by Hablot K. Browne Phiz. 8vo. <br/><br/>While the 13 line errata is deemed the first issue it is quite uncommon and not often seen on the commercial market hence most will have to be satisfied with the second issue as here.
