2019. Hardcover. New. A Child's History of England is a book by Charles Dickens. It first appeared in serial form in Household Words running from 25 January 1851 to 10 December 1853. Dickens also published the work in book form in three volumes: the first volume on 20 December 1851 the second on 24 December 1852 and the third on 25 December 1853. Although the volumes were published in December each was postdated the following year. Dickens summarizes in separate chapters the reigns of England's monarchy from Henry III to Richard III. In this book the history covered the period between 50 BC and 1689 ending with a chapter summarizing events from then until the accession of Queen Victoria. The book was included in the curricula of British school children well into the 20th century with successive editions published from 1851 to World War II.However contrary to the novel's title it's more suitable to adults than children. Charles John Huffam Dickens 7 February 1812 � 9 June 1870 was an English writer and social critic. He created some of the world's bestknown fictional characters and is regarded by many as the greatest novelist of the Victorian era. His works enjoyed unprecedented popularity during his lifetime and by the 20th century critics and scholars had recognized him as a literary genius. His novels and short stories are still widely read today. Born in Portsmouth Dickens left school to work in a factory when his father was incarcerated in a debtors' prison. Despite his lack of formal education he edited a weekly journal for 20 years wrote 15 novels five novellas hundreds of short stories and nonfiction articles lectured and performed readings extensively. He was an indefatigable letter writer and campaigned vigorously for children's rights education and other social reforms.He was regarded as the literary colossus of his age. <p>1875 hardcover as pictured. This beautiful small volume was part of a multivolume Dicken's set. It is in fairly good condition given its age. Three quarter bound in marbled paper and tan leather with gold stamping. Spine with raised bands black and red stamped paste on labels and head/tail bands. Binding is firm. Marbled boards are lightly rubbed. Leather is scuffed in a few places. Leather spine is age tanned and dry with a few small cracks. Marbled endpapers and edges of text block. Text is age tanned but appears otherwise clean and unmarked. Unfortunately the frontispiece has been removed but the remaining eleven illustrations with tissue guards remain. We have several other volumes from the <em>Carleton's New Illustrated Edition </em>set in our Biblio store. These are listed by title.
