London: Chapman and Hall 1840-41. First edition. Octavo three volumes contemporary half morocco gilt titles to the spine. Three frontispieces and numerous woodcut illustrations by George Cattermole and Hablot Browne and decorated initials in the text. In near fine condition. Master Humphrey's Clock was a weekly serial that contained both short stories and two novels The Old Curiosity Shop and Barnaby Rudge. Some of the short stories act as frame stories to the novels so the ordering of publication is important. Although Dickens' original artistic intent was to keep the short stories and the novels together he himself cancelled Master Humphrey's Clock before 1848 and described in a preface to The Old Curiosity Shop that he wished the story to not be tied down to the miscellany it began within. Most later anthologies published the short stories and the novels separately. However the short stories and the novels were published in 1840 in three bound volumes under the title Master Humphrey's Clock which retains the full and correct ordering of texts as they originally appeared. Memoirs of Joseph Grimaldi
London: Richard Bentley 1838. First Edition. Octavo. First issue with the last plate without a border edited by Boz. In two volumes 288 and 263pp. illustrated by George Cruikshank. Grimaldi a famous performing clown left his memoir in manuscript to his executer who attempted to have it published. The publisher bought the memoir edited by the executer but it needed too much work to be saleable. Dickens received from his publisher the opportunity to publish this work. Dickens signed an agreement and reworked the memoir adding his own flair. Dickens never had the opportunity to consult the manuscript as the executer sold it. Bound in contemporary 3/4 polished calf over marbled paper covered boards raised bands with compartments decorated in gilt dark brown and green morocco spine labels gilt all edge marbled with matching endpapers occasional spots of foxing to plates. 1838. Edited by "Boz." With Illustrations by George Cruikshank. In Two Volumes. London: Richard Bentley 1838. 36 pp undated Vol II ads. Original pink cloth embossed with flowers with gilt-decorated spines. First Edition of this early Dickens piece worked on after OLIVER TWIST and before NICHOLAS NICKLEBY -- during the time leading up to his break with the publisher Bentley. There has been considerable controversy regarding just how much Dickens contributed to this book. We quote from Johnson's biography: Bentley had acquired a life of the famous clown Grimaldi longÂÂwindedly and clumsily arranged by Thomas Egerton Wilks from autobiographical notes. He Bentley proposed that Dickens revise it. Dickens stipulated that his name should appear only as editor not as author and demanded a minimum of 300 pounds and a half share of the profits after deduction of expenses to which Bentley agreed. Dickens did no original writing except for an introductory and possibly a concluding chapter. His revisions mostly drastic abridgement he dictated to his father who vastly enjoyed his exalted office as amanuensis. This copy is in the primary binding of pink cloth embossed with a floral design with a clown in gilt holding the title on each spine. It also has the last plate in Vol II in the first state without the "grotesque" border that was added around Cruikshank's plate -- the border was removed for the subsequent 1846 one-volume edition. Condition is very good: as always the pink spines are a little faded and there is very slight shelfwear at the binding extremities there is also a discreet signature at the top of each title page; the original pale yellow endpapers are present and uncracked and foxing of the plates is generally limited to the two frontispieces. We say first "collectible" because there are only four known copies of the original 1851 pamphlet; supposedly a fifth from which Osgood printed this edition was destroyed in the Boston fire of 1879. This is a volume in the publisher's "Vest Pocket Series" so named for its diminutive size a second Dickens "comic burletta" was published in this series the same year -- IS SHE HIS WIFE. This copy is terra-cotta in color; others are green without priority. Dickens began writing this sketch in 1847 to raise additional money in a benefit for Leigh Hunt who was destitute at the time. A prior benefit had fallen short of its goal but before this piece could be finished Hunt received a pension that helped him considerably and the project was dropped. The American collector Lowell M. Palmer bought the original manuscript and had this volume privately printed from the manuscript; the rare book department of Dodd Mead sold copies for $10 each. Housed in a green three-quarter leather pull-off case in a green cloth chemise. Wrappers show some general light wear butsome minor expert repair and are very good overall. The front wrap on Part 1 has a small ink spot near one edge and shows a bit more wear than the other wrappers. Almost all advertisements are present including the rare cork ad in Part 2 lacking only four pages nos. 7 - 10 of the "Edwin Drood Advertiser" in Part 3 and the eight-page Chapman & Hall catalog in Part 5. Another minor difference the eight-page Chapman & Hall catalog in Part 1 is not completely unpaginated; pages 2 and 3 are marked as such. Part 6 has the "Eighteenpence" slip pasted over the original price on front wrap as found in the earliest issues. Some plates show mild light foxing. Text leaves are clean. A very attractive example housed together in a felt-lined fitted marbled board slipcase.<br/><br/>"When Dickens died on June 9 1870 he had completed only enough of his manuscript to make up six instalments leaving unfinished a work which had commanded the widest attention for its opening numbers and which promised to be one of his most effective and popular books. Although only three parts had been issued prior to his death publication of the work continued and on completion with Part 6 of all available material the vast army of readers was left high and dry as to ‘The Mystery.' Playbill measures 19 x 8 3/4 inches and possibly larger under the mount. Frame measures 25 1/2 x 15 1/4 inches. Printed in black and red. With some minor creasing and a small pencil notation. Some very light offsetting and toning. Beautifully framed. Overall about fine. This playbill tells us that the Manchester staging of Not So Bad As We Seem is the twelfth performance of the charity production. Dickens Douglas Jerrold Wilkie Collins John Tenniel Mark Lemon and others appear in the cast with Dickens taking director and producer credit as well. "Free Trade Hall Manchester. Included are PICKWICK OLD CURIOSITY SHOP BARNABY RUDGE OLIVER TWIST NICHOLAS NICKLEBY and MARTIN CHUZZLEWITT. We have seen only two other sets: we sold a rebound set more than a decade ago and we have seen a set in shabby condition worn and faded original purple cloth recased with new end papers. Because these volumes were the same size and thickness as the English "octavo novels" very few survive in acceptable condition. This is the first collected edition of Dickens' works published in America and it is entirely unrecorded: Wilkins thought the 1851 Peterson edition was the first collected American edition; Podeschi records only the four-volume reprint of 1851; the McGuire collection included an 1847-8 reprint. At Dicken's insistence the Fireside plate was replaced with the "Church" plate and Dickens's name replaced Boz and the book was reissued in three volumes a mere 7 days after the first issue on November 16 1838. 1838. our finest copy evah or The Parish Boy's Progress. By "Boz." In Three Volumes. London: Richard Bentley 1838. 4 pp Vol I undated ads; 2 preliminary pp Vol III undated ads. Original purplish-brown fine-diaper cloth. First Edition first issue of this classic novel that has also been a hit as a Broadway musical. This is the "true first edition" not merely the "first edition in book form." Unlike most of Dickens's novels OLIVER TWIST was not first issued in monthly serial parts; it did appear in "Bentley's Miscellany" magazine from February 1837 through April 1839 but this three-volume edition was published in November 1838. OLIVER TWIST was finally issued in ten serial parts in 1846 -- one of the scarcest "Dickens in parts." Within a week after initial publication copies began to be issued at Dickens's insistence with his name on the title pages rather than "Boz" and with the "church" plate replacing the "fireside" plate. This copy is of the first issue -- with "Boz" on the title pages and with the "fireside" plate at the end of Vol III. This set is in the primary fine-diaper cloth some copies are in horizontally-ribbed cloth of the same color but with a different arabesque design -- precedence unknown. This copy does have the "London/Bentley" imprint at the foot of the spines where some copies are blank; it has been surmised that the blank binding is earlier if only because Bentley would have been more likely to add than to remove his name from the volumes -- though precedence is far from certain. Lastly the list of illustrations in Vol I is present in this copy: again it is uncertain whether its absence or its presence was the earlier state though it is possible that Bentley may have begun inserting it when he realized that George Cruikshank's name had otherwise been omitted from the publication. Bear in mind that the second issue with Dickens's name on the title pages was out within a week of the first; therefore all of these questions of precedence among issue points involve only a few days. This set is in FINE condition: there is essentially no external wear to the cloth the spine gilt remains bright the original yellow endpapers exhibit only the merest hint of cracking there is scarcely any foxing at all on the textual leaves or plates. in fact the ONLY notable flaw is that on two covers there is a faint partial glass-ring. Period. This is the best copy we have offered in our 35 years in business. Smith I pp 28-37; Gimbel A27; Eckel pp 59-61; Carter BV p. 107 and MBV p. 7. We have more books available by this author!. 404 pp. "Oliver Twist is born into a life of poverty and misfortune raised in a workhouse in the fictional town of Mudfog located 70 miles 110 km north of London.11128 He is orphaned by his father's mysterious absence and his mother Agnes' death in childbirth welcomed only in the workhouse and robbed of her gold name locket. Oliver is meagerly provided for under the terms of the Poor Law and spends the first nine years of his life living at a baby farm in the 'care' of a woman named Mrs Mann who embezzles much of the money entrusted to the baby farm by the parish. Oliver is brought up with little food and few comforts. Around the time of Oliver's ninth birthday Mr Bumble the parish beadle removes Oliver from the baby farm and puts him to work picking and weaving oakum at the main workhouse. Oliver who toils with very little food remains in the workhouse for six months. One day the desperately hungry boys decide to draw lots; the loser must ask for another portion of gruel. The character is notable for his cloying humility obsequiousness and insincerity making frequent references to his own "'humbleness". His name has become synonymous with being a yes man.
