Very good in elaborate full leather calf covered boards with gilt borders on the front and rear boards five raised bands on the spine with red morocco title labels with gilt text in two of the compartments with gilt tool work in the others. The end sheets are marbled with gilt inner dentelles that have offset to the edges of the first and last free end pages. The top edge of the text block is gilt. The binding is by Ramage of London as can be seen by that firm's gilt embossed line on the front paste down just above the dentelle. There is a small prior owner's book plate on the front pastedown the same name with an address is stamped on the first free end page and the name appears again in ink on the second free end page. While the hinges are tight and sound the joints are rubbed; and have startied. An octavo measuring 8 3/16" tall by 5 1/4" containing 624 pages of text. Illustrated with 40 engraved plates by H. K. Browne "Phiz". This is a mixed state first edition with the transposed pound sign on the sign-post on the vignette title page; but with the second issue fourteen-line errata page. An excellent copy extremities lightly rubbed with the usual foxing and some staining to the plates text otherwise very clean and bright. A very attractive copy. Nicholas Nickleby is Dickens's third novel which he began writing while Oliver Twist was still in progress. Characteristic of Dickens's work Nicholas Nickleby is a whirlwind of social satire with a complex network of characters and plotlines. The book highlights the controversy that surrounded Yorkshire boarding schools in the 1830s as news stories brought to light the abuse and neglect that was common among these institutions known for accepting unwanted children from parents who paid high prices to send them anywhere they could. Dickens's villain Wackford Squeers was based on Walter Shaw the real-life headmaster of Bowes Academy one of the schools reported for allowing rampant abuse of its pupils. The book has since been adapted for theater television and film and remains one of Dickens's most well-known works. This first edition in book form was bound from the publisher's parts with the stab holes from the original wrappers present and all the points called for by Smith meaning that it is one of the earlier issues of the first edition. Furthermore this copy was bound from the earliest states of the publisher's parts for as Hatton and Cleaver note "There are two distinguishing features only which point out early printings from later issues:" the substitution of "visiter" for "sister" on page 123 and "latter" instead of "letter" on page 160; both of these errors were corrected while Nicholas Nickleby was issued in parts causing Smith to cite these points as "in some copies." This copy has both "visiter" and "latter" deeming it a scarce first edition bound from the first state of the publisher's parts. . First Edition. Hard Cover. Fine. An exceptional presentation. In 1867 Charles Dickens began his second American reading tour at Boston's Tremont Temple where an enthusiastic audience delighted in some of his most notable works members of the audience included legendary literary stars such as Henry Wadsworth Longfellow and Ralph Waldo Emerson. Although Dickens was in declining health he embarked on an ambitious travel schedule across the United States. Dickens returned to Boston once more before concluding his U.S. tour in New York City. When Charles Dickens arrived in Boston on November 19 1867 the celebrated English author spent several days at the Parker House hotel recuperating from the voyage. As conscientious a performer as he was a writer Dickens had prepared diligently for his performances redrafting and memorizing key passages from his books especially for these engagements. He used a book only as a prop; he was so familiar with the material that he could improvise with ease. However during his 1867-1868 tour he was plagued with Flu-like symptoms insomnia and an inflammation of his foot which forced him to walk with a cane. During his last tours in 1868 Dickens confined much of his performances to the New England area. Dickens was grateful for the income he desperately needed from his readings which generated $140000 close to $2000000 today; but he longed for home. On April 8 1868 Dickens gave the last performance of the tour. Prolonged applause followed the reading. He closed by telling the audience "In this brief life of ours it is sad to do almost anything for the last time. Ladies and gentlemen I beg most earnestly most gratefully and most affectionately to bid you each and all farewell." From the famed Hatton & Cleaver collection and annotated by Thomas Hatton who has written in pencil on the rear wrapper of part VI: "No. 920 - clean and perfect." Additionally Mr. Hatton has written in pencil in part VI on page 192 the final page of text "CNP . TH." "CNP" meaning "clean and perfect." Original green printed wrappers - ALL wrappers are correct. FIRST ISSUE of the text with part IV having the misprint "visiter" for "sister" on page 123 line 17 and part V having the misprint "latter" for letter on page 160 line 6 up. FIRST STATE of the plates having the publisher's imprint beneath the illustrations in parts I and II and FIRST STATE of plate 29 in part XV with the long title and the signature "PHIZ" in caps a dot preceeding the letter "P" and another dot between the last two letters. Part XI has the Charles Tilt ad as cited by Hatton & Cleaver: "In many copies seen there is to be found pasted within the front wrapper a small yellow slip 4 1/2" x 3" issued by Charles Tilt Fleet Street. On one side it is headed "New books for Children/Tales of Shipwrecks & Disasters at Sea" and on verso "Unique Present" - Substantially all the ads and slips are present with the following exceptions: part II lacks the Mechi slip and two leaves of the Advertiser; part III lacks the scarce Joseph Amesbury ad; part VIII lacks only the scarce Tyas "Heads of the People" ad. All other ads are present as called for by Hatton & Cleaver. Part XIX/XX has the scarce "Hill's Seal Wafers" ad without the seals. The plates are very good to fine; tissue guards are present. Spines are expertly renewed on parts I VI and perhaps a few others. Subscriber's names or initials on front wraps of parts IX XII XIII XVI and XIX/XX. Small repair to fore-corners of part I front wrapper. Bookplate of Mortimer L. Schiff on page 1 of Advertiser of part I; armorial bookplate of Charles Parkhurst on inside of slipcase and chemise. Octavo i-viiviii-xxixii-xivxvxvi 12-624 with 39 plates by Phiz and the frontis by Maclise. The present set is exceptional in many ways: both the text and plates have the FIRST ISSUE points; it is annotated by the bibliographer Thomas Hatton and is from the Hatton & Cleaver collection; all parts are complete with the exceptions of II III and VIII as noted above. "Clarke Printers Silver Street Falcon Square" verso of title-page and at the foot of page 40. Fine. Notated music after Cruikshank's preface. Bookseller's tag of W.H. Dalton 28 Cockspur St. Charing Cross. This poem was a personal favorite of Cruikshank's and he was known to utilize a costume from table-covers table-napkins and antimacassars – or anything else he could lay his hands on to deliver his rousing rendition of Lord Bateman the tune of which appears notated just before the first page of text. The authorship of this poetry by Dickens was confirmed by a letter 3 July 1839 in which Dickens expresses his desire "to remain unknown … for weighty reasons" <i>The Letters of Charles Dickens</i>Vol. I Oxford Clarendon House and Storey eds.:1969. First American Edition issued as No. 114 in Holt's "Leisure Hour Series." THE MUDFOG PAPERS had originally appeared in America in the 1830s in the American Bentley's Miscellany and one of them "The Public Life of Mr. Tulrumble" was included in an 1837 Lea & Blanchard collection of sketches; the other papers' first appearance in book form was as an appendix to Mackenzie's LIFE OF DICKENS Philadelphia 1870. It was not until 1880 however that THE MUDFOG PAPERS were published as a separate book by Bentley in England and by Holt in America. Collins with thirteen of the fourteen plates including engraved portrait of Dickens and vignette title by Samuel Luke Fildes. Part 6 in earliest state with "Price Eighteenpence" pasted over the printed "Price One Shilling" later states are printed with the corrected price; Part 5 "Jasper's Sacrifices" plate hand-colored spine separated at page 129 with only the first of three advertisements at rear; Part 4 complete with "Edwin Drood Advertiser" to front and all three ads to rear; Part 3 with all five advertisements at rear and thus quite rare; Part 2 with the scarce Gaimes Sanders & Nicol ad on cork as well as the other back advertisement and the rear wrapper; Part 1 complete with "Edwin Drood Advertiser" insert at front. A good set with significant wear soiling and some loss but a completely unrestored example of Dickens' last published work free of the usual repairs. Housed in a custom box with a folding chemise. Hatton & Cleaver pp. 373-384. Originally published serially in the six monthly installments The Mystery of Edwin Drood was also published in book form on August 31 1870. Both the later serial installments and the first book form edition were published posthumously after Dickens' death in June 1870 leaving the novel unfinished. The story is named after the titular character Edwin Drood although the text largely focuses on his uncle John Jasper an opium addict and choir master who is romantically interested in his nephew's fiancé. In the story Drood disappears under mysterious circumstances and due to Dicken's premature death at 58 the mystery is never resolved. Accordingly many of the novel's fans speculate as to whether or not Drood is dead and if so who killed him. Many authors have attempted to resolve the plot including Dickens' son Charley in 1873 and Thomas James a Vermont-based printer and con artist who claimed to have channeled the deceased Dickens and learned his intended ending for the novel. . Generally quite clean interior with a few very light and scattered spots of foxing; primarily to outer page edges. Frontis tissue guard off-set and fragile; semi-detached but still holding. 1870. New York: Harper & Brothers 1870. 2 pp preliminary ads plus 44 pp terminal ads dated Oct 1870. Original yellow-brown pictorial wrappers. Early second American edition published in late September about three weeks after Fields Osgood's edition -- and about three months after Dickens's death in June left this tale unfinished. The front cover illustration the same as appeared on the six UK parts was the work of Charles A. Collins -- Dickens's son-in-law and Wilkie's brother; the scenes shown formed the basis for the numerous attempts after Dickens's death to complete or "solve" the mystery. Harper had been serializing DROOD in parts as a monthly Dickens supplement to their Harper's Weekly but Fields Osgood had earlier paid Dickens an advance for book publication. The Harper serialization -- as well as the fact that this Harper edition came out only in wrappers -- probably explains why Harper's edition is so scarce today: many of their readers had already read the tale serially. This copy does bear the earliest and usual date October 1870 on both the ads and rear cover and the preliminary list of titles properly ends with No. 349. This copy does NOT have the Dickens portrait leaf which Smith notes is true with some copies. Copies without that leaf may be a later state but possibly copies WITH it may be a later state; a third possibility is that some initial buyers removed that leaf for framing in honor of the author who had just died. Condition is very good with very little of the wrapper lacking but with a couple of dampstains affecting the front cover and first leaves. This Harper edition is MUCH scarcer than the Fields Osgood edition for the reasons cited above; this is the first time in 40 years that we have offered it in original wrappers. Headcap and top tips worn away wear and slight fraying along spine edges rubbing and a few small scratches to cloth. Endpapers foxed small bookplate on paste down. Typical small stab-holes to outer margins of a few illustrations as well as last four illustrations inserted to face versos a variant mentioned by Smith.
