A CURIOUS DANCE ROUND A CURIOUS TREE with envelope
1860. London: St. Luke's Hospital 1860. Original pale pink wrappers with original narrow "one penny" envelope.<br/> <br/> First Edition second and usual issue. Dickens describes the wretched conditions inside St. Luke's Hospital "established in 1751 for the treatment and care of lunatics" and in particular the "very sad and touching spectacle" of the annual Christmas Ball there dancing around the Christmas tree. He actually wrote the original piece in 1852 at which time it appeared in his Household Words Dickens's authorship was questioned until 1913 when the original manuscript -- in his hand -- turned up. It is here published in book form for the first time eight years later when Dickens gave permission for the hospital to use it as a fundraising appeal. The hospital added two items to update the piece: an article about the 1860 Ball from the "Times" plus a brief article "Contrast between 1852 and 1860" in which the hospital asserts that many of the deficiencies cited by Dickens have since been addressed. The results of the initial mailing were not good -- which is why for this second issue the final paragraph the actual appeal was highlighted in bold. This second issue not only has the final paragraph in bold it also has a pink wrapper not mauve -- though all are today faded it has the front cover title followed by a comma not by a period and it has a front cover border decorative only at the corners not all 'round. This is a fine copy of this very fragile item with scarcely any wear soil or foxing; as usual the pink wrappers have faded. As with almost all copies there is a vertical crease because the booklet was folded vertically when the fundraising appeal was mailed out in narrow envelopes. Included with this copy is the original unaddressed narrow envelope with "Postage One Penny" in the corner. Since it is exactly the size to fit within the folded booklet and a little too small to fit around the folded booklet it is our belief that this was the envelope for the hoped-for postage-paid contribution. Original red cloth pictorially decorated in gilt all page edges gilt.<br/> <br/> First Edition of the fourth of Dickens's five illustrated Christmas books -- following A CHRISTMAS CAROL THE CHIMES and THE CRICKET ON THE HEARTH and preceding THE HAUNTED MAN. This is an unusual tale in which two sisters love the same man both ultimately settling in with him though only one is married to him -- according to Thackeray "a wretched affair." It is in fact quite autobiographical: Dickens loved Mary Hogarth married her sister Catherine and then was happy to have his household run by their sister Georgina. This copy has the vignette title page in the fourth and usual state Todd's state E1 with an angel holding the banner and with no publisher's imprint; in our experience at least 90% and perhaps 95% of the copies encountered are of this state. This is a bright near-fine copy with very little wear; atypically the original delicate endpapers are not cracked the front paste-down bears the bookplate of the late Chicago professor Thomas S. 1865. New York: Harper & Brothers 1865. 2 pp undated ads. Original purple cloth.<br/> <br/> First Complete American Edition. Harper paid for the advance rights to issue OUR MUTUAL FRIEND serially in Harper's New Monthly Magazine and then issued it in several book forms. One format was in two wrappered volumes beginning with Part I on 2 February 1865. Then on 11 November 1865 Harper issued both part II of that format at 50¢ AND the entire book either in cloth as here at $1.50 or in wrappers at $1.00. All of these formats include 34 of the 40 illustrations that has appeared in the UK. This more or less mirrored when the two volumes were being issued in England. Meanwhile John Bradburn of New York "borrowing" from Harper's serialization was issuing the book in four volumes after aborting his effort to do it in monthly numbers; Bradburn's first volume came out in October 1864 constituting the first appearance of any part of the novel in book form on either side of the Atlantic and likewise Bradburn's Vol III was the first such appearance of that segment of the novel. Bradburn did not publish Vol IV until December 1865 though -- after this Harper edition -- so Harper's qualifies as the first edition of the entire novel to be published. This copy is in purple honeycomb-grain cloth the primary binding cited by Smith there were five or more cloth variants used without priority. Condition is very good-plus spine sunned as always with purple cloth very minor wear at the extremities. Smith pp 387-392; Gimbel A151; Wilkins p. 32. unknown

Original blind-stamped black cloth with gilt vignette on spines.<br/> <br/> Second American Edition which is to say Peterson's two-volume "Uniform Duodecimo Edition." Harper paid for advance rights to serialize this novel and to publish it as an octavo book on 11 November 1865; they also sold their plates to Peterson in such a way that Peterson was able to publish their sub-edition on the very same day "probably a few hours after Harper's edition." Peterson would use these same octavo plates for several years such as for their 1867 Green Cloth Edition." But Peterson also created its own duodecimo plates for publication that very same day of this two-volume single-column edition with the plates separately printed -- which was priced at $4.00 compared to $2.50. Condition appears to be just about fine but the volumes were professionally recased -- very early on as the signature and corresponding personal book-label on each front paste-down appear to be from long ago. We say first "collectible" because there are only four known copies of the original 1851 pamphlet; supposedly a fifth from which Osgood printed this edition was destroyed in the Boston fire of 1879. This is a volume in the publisher's "Vest Pocket Series" so named for its diminutive size a second Dickens "comic burletta" was published in this series the same year -- IS SHE HIS WIFE. This copy is terra-cotta in color; others are green without priority. It is a bright near-fine copy very slight rubbing at the very tips of the binding -- quite uncommon in this condition. Original light grey-green boards with red cloth spine and printed label.<br/> <br/> First American Edition being a volume in the "Library of Fiction" limited to 1000 copies issued in January 1837. The volume consists of the title tale by Dickens followed by nine other tales by other writers. This is the only one of "Boz"'s tales that having appeared in a British periodical did not then appear in one of the two book series of SKETCHES BY BOZ see Smith I p. 15 note 2. Instead it appeared in the British "Library of Fiction" in April 1836 and was not included in SKETCHES BY BOZ until that title was issued in monthly parts Nov 1837 through June 1839. In America Carey Lea & Blanchard published SKETCHES BY BOZ second series a month or two after this -- not including "Tuggs's" -- and then combined "Tuggs's" into a reprint of that volume in June of the same year. This is a good-plus copy general soil and edge-wear notably to the rear joint label rubbed but still legible half of rear free endpaper missing. This is acceptable condition for a book that is so scarce in its original binding -- as these 1830s Philadelphia volumes were bound up using extremely delicate cheap materials. Original green cloth.<br/> <br/> First American Edition second issue with added material -- of the tale left unfinished at the time of Dickens's death in June 1870. In addition to DROOD this second issue adds James T. Fields's introductory "Some Memories of Charles Dickens" plus Dickens's "George Silverman's Explanation" "Holiday Romance" "Sketches of Young Couples" "New Uncommercial Samples" plus "The Will of Charles Dickens." Since 1867 Ticknor & Fields and then Fields Osgood had been Dickens's authorized publisher in America; they had serialized DROOD in their weekly Every Saturday and then published this book in early September. Ticknor & Fields had specifically commissioned Dickens to write "Holiday Romance" so that it could appear in their children's periodical Our Young Folks in 1868. Harper also serialized DROOD in a monthly Dickens supplement to Harper's Weekly but did not get their book edition out until late September. This copy is in the original green cloth in the second binding state -- 9-1/16 inches tall with a generic design replacing the FO&Co emblem on the covers and with a JRO&Co monogram rather than FO&Co at the foot of the spine: when James T. Fields retired on New Year's Day 1871 the firm became James R. Osgood & Company. The volume is in very good condition minor external wear pp 13-16 edge-worn with tape mend at gutter also reinforced at the gutter of the frontispiece. 1854. Boston: Jenks Hickling & Swan 1854. Original blind-stamped dark brown cloth with gilt-decorated spines.<br/> <br/> Early American edition just possibly the first complete one. Since Harper published the two volumes of its edition separately in March 1853 and in March 1854 so dated on the title pages it is considered to be the first American edition. The date in 1854 when these two Boston volumes were published is unknown so it is possible that this two-volume Boston edition came out earlier in 1854 than Harper's second volume. Jenks Hickling & Swan was a very "fluid" enterprise at the time such that their 1856 and 1857 two-volumes-in-one printings would be by Hickling Swan & Brown and their 1861 two-in-one printing would be by Swan Brewer & Tileston. This set is in very good-plus condition a few small holes in the cloth mainly at extremities or at joints; the gilt on the spines is unusually bright. Smith pp 116-119; Carr UTexas B500 in blue cloth; not cited by Podeschi. Provenance: both front free endpapers bear not only a contemporary signature but also the penciled signature of Dickens bibliographer Walter Smith; in fact this very copy is the one pictured on pages 117 and 118 of his book. unknown

THE MYSTERY OF EDWIN DROOD
1870. New York: Harper & Brothers 1870. 2 pp preliminary ads plus 44 pp terminal ads dated Oct 1870. Original yellow-brown pictorial wrappers.<br/> <br/> Early second American edition published in late September about three weeks after Fields Osgood's edition -- and about three months after Dickens's death in June left this tale unfinished. The front cover illustration the same as appeared on the six UK parts was the work of Charles A. Collins -- Dickens's son-in-law and Wilkie's brother; the scenes shown formed the basis for the numerous attempts after Dickens's death to complete or "solve" the mystery. Harper had been serializing DROOD in parts as a monthly Dickens supplement to their Harper's Weekly but Fields Osgood had earlier paid Dickens an advance for book publication. The Harper serialization -- as well as the fact that this Harper edition came out only in wrappers -- probably explains why Harper's edition is so scarce today: many of their readers had already read the tale serially. This copy does bear the earliest and usual date October 1870 on both the ads and rear cover and the preliminary list of titles properly ends with No. 349. This copy does NOT have the Dickens portrait leaf which Smith notes is true with some copies. Copies without that leaf may be a later state but possibly copies WITH it may be a later state; a third possibility is that some initial buyers removed that leaf for framing in honor of the author who had just died. Condition is very good with very little of the wrapper lacking but with a couple of dampstains affecting the front cover and first leaves. This Harper edition is MUCH scarcer than the Fields Osgood edition for the reasons cited above; this is the first time in 40 years that we have offered it in original wrappers. Original blind-stamped red cloth.<br/> <br/> First Complete American Edition issued as No. LXIII in Wiley & Putnam's "Library of Choice Reading" -- available either in wrappers on its own or bound in red cloth together with Mrs. Jameson's MEMOIRS AND ESSAYS as here. During 1846 seven letters from Dickens in Italy were published in The Daily News in London and in America Wiley & Putnam jumped on them and published them in two wrappered parts titled TRAVELLING LETTERS WRITTEN ON THE ROAD -- the only such book edition on either side of the Atlantic and extremely scarce today. Later that year Dickens polished up the letters and added considerably to their number creating the U.K. volume PICTURES FROM ITALY published on May 18th; Wiley & Putnam quickly issued this corresponding American edition on June 8th followed "a day or two" Smith later by William Colyer's edition. Condition of this copy is very good: the original endpapers are intact but there is some wear along the outer joints though the book is tight. Smith pp 77-80 including photographs of this copy; Podeschi Yale A100 listing only a copy in wrappers; Carr Texas B495 likewise; Wilkins p. 28. Provenance: the front paste-down bears a college bookplate and a number is stamped onto the copyright page; the front free endpaper bears the penciled signature of Dickens bibliographer Walter E. SPEECH delivered at the Meeting of the ADMINISTRATIVE REFORM ASSOCIATION
1855. at the Theatre Royal Drury Lane Wednesday June 27 1855. London: Effingham Wilson 1855. Original printed self-wrappers.<br/> <br/> First Edition of this speech Dickens gave to the Administrative Reform Association. Dickens was a founding member of this organization that lambasted the government for its indifference to the plight of the common man. Dickens was unable to be present when Austen Henry Layard addressed a meeting at Drury Lane on June 20th but he was entirely in accord with what Layard said. The evidence of government blue books Layard charged revealed "records of inefficiency records of indifference to suffering records of ignorance records of obstinacy" that were a shame to the nation. The Civil Service was grossly overstaffed with men busy making work for each other. Lord Palmerston personally he denounced for an attitude of levity toward the sufferings of the people. Stung by the attack Lord Palmerston retorted with a sneer about "the private theatricals at Drury Lane." And Dickens fired with indignation determined that such a creature "as this Lord Palmerston" must have it rung "into his soul or what stands for it that the time for Dandy insolence is gone for ever." At a second Drury Lane gathering on the 27th. Johnson It is said that the mood Dickens exhibited giving this address mirrored the mood of the novel he was then writing -- NOBODY'S FAULT the name was changed just before publication to LITTLE DORRIT. This copy properly reads "eighteen hundred" on the first page of text which means that it is not the very first and very scarce issue; however this copy does not have the printer Rickerby mentioned on the title page -- his name was added to only the latest issues. In our experience this mixed issue is the one usually encountered -- though any issue in original wrappers is quite uncommon. Just a bit of soil on the blank rear cover otherwise this copy is fine. 1855. Containing: The Seven Poor Travellers. Nine New Stories by the Christmas Fire. Hard Times. With a Portrait of the Author engraved on steel. Philadelphia: T.B. Peterson n.d. 1855. Original dark brown cloth blind-stamped with spine vignette in gilt.<br/> <br/> First Edition so collected first issue in the dark brown binding with spine vignette in gilt "T.B. Peterson" at the foot of the spine and 102 Chestnut Street as the title page address. Although the volume consists of six works "by Dickens" the last three are not "Lizzie Leigh" "The Miner's Daughters" and "Fortune Wildred". The first two pieces in the volume which really do involve Dickens are "The Seven Poor Travellers" and "Nine New Stories by the Christmas Fire": these were the "Extra Christmas Numbers" of Dickens's periodical Household Words for 1854 and 1853 respectively. "Nine New Stories" is the American title for "Another Round of Stories": of the stories Dickens himself wrote "The Schoolboy's Story" and "Nobody's Story." For "The Seven Poor Travellers" this constitutes the first American edition published soon after it came out in London for Christmas 1854; Dickens himself wrote "the First Poor Traveller" and "The Road." Finally Dickens's novel HARD TIMES is also included in this volume in its entirety; it had been serialized in Household Words during 1854 and this is a very early but not first American edition of it. 1860. An Extra Double Number of of All The Year Round. New York: J. M. Emerson & Co. 1860. Original self-wrappers bound in at the rear of the February 1861 monthly issue which has its own pale-yellow printed wrappers.<br/> <br/> First American Edition "published simultaneously in London and New York " according to the front wrapper -- of the second of the nine extra Christmas numbers of All The Year Round. Dickens actually wrote only the first second and fifth chapters of A MESSAGE FROM THE SEA the remainder having been written by his son-in-law's brother Wilkie Collins. This was the second of the nine extra Christmas number of All The Year Round of which Dickens was the editor. This is the only one of the nine annual numbers to be illustrated -- having on page 5 a woodcut of the actual "message from the sea." This example has the 48-page Extra Christmas Number bound in at the rear of the February 1861 monthly issue which includes the weekly issues of January. Included in those weekly issues are the first two serial parts of GREAT EXPECTATIONS the first of which leads off with the well-known "My father's family name being Pirrip.". Quite scarce -- much scarcer than the London edition. Very good condition wear at the corners. Not in Podeschi Yale -- see E13; see Eckel pp 195. unknown

These 21 volumes can’t be said to include everything the great man wrote given how prolific he was but comes close. It does include all of his novels from “The Pickwick Papers†through the unfinished “The Mystery of Edwin Drood†which he was still working on at his death. It also includes his first published book “Sketches by Boz†a collection of non-fiction pieces he wrote under a pseudonym while still working as a journalist. His other short works both fiction and non-fiction were published in various collections under titles that changed over the years and even the more standardized titles were sometimes assembled in different combinations in different books so the four volumes here may not absolutely match those that have come before but be assured you will find collections of Dickens Christmas short stories as well as his collected Christmas novellas his pieces describing his travels in America and Italy “A Child’s History of England†and more. Each volume is amply illustrated with up to 76 period engravings many of which appeared in the first editions. The publisher Oxford University Press says the text of many of these works is derived from what is known as the Charles Dickens Edition revised by the author himself in the late 1860s. Much of the copy you find in this set was initially released as individual volumes with introductions by modern writers across the mid-twentieth century. Notably those modern writers were considered by the publishers to be experts on Dickens but that does not mean they were academic scholars. The writer of the introduction to “The Mystery of Edwin Drood†for instance was most famous as the president of the Sherlock Holmes Society which is probably fitting for Dickens’ only murder mystery which readers are still trying to solve as it was unfinished at his death and he doesn’t tell us "who done it!" A collected set of 21 volumes—rather ironically titled “The New Oxford Illustrated Dickens†considering what was to come—was published in 1966 and this 21-volume set with completely new bindings and jackets was published in 1987 and could be considered a new version of that.<br /> <br /> The volumes in this set are pristine and in most ways “as new†right down to that stiffness upon opening that new books have with three exceptions: two of his novels “Oliver Twist†and “Nicholas Nickleby†have the name of a previous owner and in one case the year written in ink on the front free endpaper. Otherwise there are no marks or tears on any of the pages of all 21 volumes. All of the books are bound in plain brown library cloth. There is no text or decoration on the covers. All of that is located on the spine stamped in white where the author’s name is framed by scalloped lines above the title with the publisher’s name at the bottom. None of the bindings show any sign of bumping rubbing or even of shelf wear. What’s even more surprising is that neither do any of the dust jackets—we are judging the books as “fine†condition instead of new which is how they present because of those names on the two front free endpapers but the dust jackets are new and flawless.
