(DICKENS, Charles), J Friedheim, music by
Sheet music: "Boz" in Boston: A Quick Step
Boston: Henry Prentiss 1842. Softcover. Very Good. Unknown edition. Folio. Single bifolium making four pages. Separating along the bottom of the fold notched and worn along the fold from once being bound within an album light offsetting throughout and light edgewear still very good. An instrumental piece for piano. Plate number 223. Above the music is printed "As performed in the Melo Drama of the Nalade Queen." The front cover states "The friend and benefactor of poor 'Oliver' 'Nicholas' and sweet little 'Nelly'" underneath a portrait of Dickens. This is the same portrait shown on the cover of the 1842 publication of "The Stars Their Early Vigils Keep" which was sung at the complimentary dinner held for Charles Dickens in Boston on February 1st 1842 upon his first visit to the United States; this being the same visit referenced in the title "'Boz' in Boston" Boz of course being Dicken's childhood nickname for his little brother which he adopted as his pen name. OCLC locates only six holdings and it appears to be equally scarce in the trade. Henry Prentiss unknown

MASTER HUMPHREY'S CLOCK being OLD CURIOSITY SHOP and BARNABY RUDGE
London: Chapman and Hall 1840 1841. 3 volumes bound in one. First Edition in book form of the the three volumes of the work. With 198 drawings by George Cattermole and Hablot Browne. Royal thick 8vo bound in handsome period three-quarter black polished calf over marbled paper covered boards the backing and corner-pieces tooled in gilt the spine with gilt filleted double bands with gilt stippled chain trim diced in blind one compartment with gilt lettering. iv 306; 306; 426 pp. A pleasing and handsome copy the binding strong and in good order with a bit of normal wear at the extremities very well preserved inside and out A PLEASING AND HANDSOME COPY OF MASTER HUMPHREY’S CLOCK which was initiated as an experiment on Dickens’ part. Originally he intended the work to be a miscellany which would contain a continuous narrative linked by reminisces of the narrator Master Humphrey. He outlined his goals in a preliminary letter to Chapman and Hall: “To introduce a little club or knot of characters and to carry their personal histories and proceedings through the work; to introduce fresh characters constantly; to reintroduce Mr. Pickwick and Sam Weller; xxx to write amusing essays on the various foibles of the day as they arise; to take advantage of passing events; and to vary the form of the papers by throwing them into sketches letters from imaginary correspondents and so forth so as to diversify the contents as much as possible.†Dickens would use ideas from the outline of this form in several succeeding books.
As the originally-conceived miscellany MASTER HUMPHREY’S CLOCK failed to gain a substantial readership so the project was quickly abandoned the story transformed into a serial and the character of Master Humphrey himself abandoned as a narrator in the midst of THE OLD CURIOSITY SHOP. According to Eckel the work was published in four distinct forms over the course of its creation: in 88 weekly parts 30 monthly parts a three-volume edition and in separately bound volumes of the two stories "The Old Curiosity Shop" and "Barnaby Rudge."
"In the latter form" he states "all the extraneous 'Clock' matter had been expunged but was retained in the other forms of publication." The three volume issues have become scarce indeed and especially so in such a pleasing and honest state of preservation. Chapman and Hall hardcover

The Charles Dickens Testimonial, penny royalty stamp [ The Strand Magazine, London; royalties; copyright ]:
The Charles Dickens Testimonial. One penny royalty stamp for Dickens's descendants with copy of article from the Strand Magazine explaining the scheme titled 'The Charles Dickens Testimonial. Look Out for the Dickens Stamp!'
The stamp issued in 1912 by The Charles Dickens Testimonial 17-21 Tavistock Street London WC. The article published by the Strand Magazine London. 1910 or 1911. On 7 January 1911 Beckles Willson Honorary Secretary of the Charles Dickens Testimonial explained the scheme to the readers of the Spectator. Three members of Dickens's family were Willson explained 'drawing a niggardly pension of £25 per annum from the British Government' and that 'no volume recently published of Dickens has returned any copyright fee save those which bear the Dickens copyright stamp'. The stamp was 'on sale for one penny each-in sheets of twelve-at every bookseller's in the land and at all Messrs. W. H. Smith's and Wyman's news-stalls. His Majesty the King her Majesty the Queen her Majesty Queen Alexandra and other members of the Royal Family ever ready to be the exemplars in every good and just cause have led the way by placing the copyright stamps in their volumes of Dickens. Their example has been followed by many of the leading statesmen lawyers authors actors editors and divines of the day. If every owner of Dickens will not shirk his penny a magnificent centenary tribute will be assured. For there are forty-eight million copies of Dickens extant.' The publishers Macmillan Willson continued had agreed 'to insert a Dickens stamp gratis in every volume of every edition of Dickens issued by them during the hundredth year of the novelist. The significance of this must not be overlooked. It means that for the first time in literary history the representatives of a great writer will he in receipt of a copyright fee not conferred by the action of the copyright laws ; small it is true but to which they are entitled as truly as the heirs of any landlord are entitled to receive tribute in the shape of rent.' The stamp offered here is printed in black ink on a piece of paper approximately 5 x 4 cm with perforated edges and gummed reverse. In very good condition. Priced at a penny with an oval portrait of Dickens within a border in the form of a carved wooden frame with 'A TRIBUTE TO GENIUS' and the dates 1812 and 1912 at the head the words 'CENTENARY TESTIMONIAL' around the portrait and a facsimile of Dickens's signature at the foot. The four-page article paginated 608-611 is on three leaves extracted from the Strand Magazine. Stapled together and in good condition. Includes full-page 'Unpublished Photograph of Dickens' taken by Thrupp of Birmingham in 1869. The article features a reproduction of the stamp and a list of the scheme's committee headed by the Earl of Rosebery and including Theodore Roosevelt Hilaire Belloc G. K. Chesterton Sir Arthur Conan Doyle Thomas Hardy Rudyard Kipling and more than fifty others. 'The actual design for the stamp has been evolved by a sub-committee comprising Lord Alverstone and Messrs. Brition Riviere R.A. H. Rider Haggard Clement K. Shorter and Sir Adolph Tuck Bart.' [ The stamp issued in 1912 by The Charles Dickens Testimonial, 17-21 Tavistock Street, London WC. ] The article published by the unknown
