Bindings rather sunned; "Notes" with the wrappers a bit chipped and soiled "Notes" also rather foxed internally because of poor paper quality though the other two works generally quite clean scattered light stains plates with overall mild toning other trivial defects but all still perfectly acceptable in their solid unrestored original bindings.<br/> <br/> This is a pleasing group of three early American Dickens printings all in their original publisher's bindings and well preserved when considering the poor state of bookmaking in the United States at the time. Of "Oliver" one of the author's most famous works Day says "the novel's lasting achievement is the symbolic power of the dark underwolrd of the poor. The pitiful figure of Oliver holding out his little bowl and asking for more is an ineradicable symbol of all the needy children in the world pleading for sustenance. In such universalizing lies the magic of Dickens." The work first appeared in America in two volumes published by Lea & Blanchard previously Carey Lea and Blanchard in 1838-39. Our single volume edition followed shortly in 1839 initially in a state containing only two frontispiece etchings and shortly after with the full 24 as here. This copy which retains the original ads before and after the text is from the library of an important Dickens scholar: William Miller was a founding member of the Dickens Fellowship and helped create their journal "Dickensiana." He published a Dickens bibliography "The Dickens Student and Collector" in 1946 and had a large collection of Dickens' works and related ephemera particularly focusing on musical adaptations of Dickens' works. Our copy also belonged to John Beekman Finlay 1810-69 an early president of the First National Bank of Saratoga Springs and a justice of the peace. "Nicholas Nickleby" written during the same period as "Oliver" follows the eponymous character's attempts to get by and to protect his virtuous sister Kate from poverty suitors with evil motives and the pair's cartoonishly cruel uncle Ralph. Day writes that while the plot is "rather hopeless" in this novel "Dickens creates some of the most extraordinary scenes in English literature" with deliciously comic and highly theatrical juxtapositions of character and scene. Originally released in 20 parts by Lea & Blanchard from 1838-39 the present version is the first complete edition released in the United States. Apparently two concurrent states were released one with all 39 of the Phiz illustrations and the second as in our copy with two frontispiece illustrations only. The third work here is probably the most unfavorably received of all of Dickens' books particularly in the States. "Notes" reflects the hearty dislike the author developed for America during his tour there in the winter and spring of 1842. He was disgusted with the Americans' rough-hewn lack of sophistication and especially with the toleration of slavery and the book clearly shows his antipathy. Ours was one of three editions released in November of 1842; there is some disagreement about which of these is truly the first American edition but they all were issued within a few days of each other. This is a handsome copy of the first edition first state of the second Dickens Christmas book unrestored in the publisher’s original illustrated red cloth. <br /> <br />Condition is very good. The elaborately gilt and blind stamped red cloth is square and tight. Color is noteworthy the covers bright the spine only slightly dulled. Soiling is quite light. Shelf wear manifests primarily at the gently bruised corners wrinkled spine ends a slightly frayed spine heel and the joints which show a few tiny abrasion holes. Overall presentation is nonetheless quite good and binding integrity uncompromised. The contents are notably clean. The only previous ownership mark found is a tiny gilt and black printed bookseller’s ticket – “HALE & ROWORTH Stationers Bookbinders & c.” of “MANCHESTER” - affixed to the upper front pastedown. The gilt edges remain bright. We find no appreciable spotting. First state is confirmed by “CHAPMAN & HALL” printed within the bottom edge of the vignette title page illustration above the names of the artist and engraver rather than below. The binding is protected beneath a clear removable mylar cover. <br /> <br />Although the title page of The Chimes is postdated 1845 publication was on 16 December 1844. <br /> <br />Charles John Huffam Dickens 1812-1870 was an English writer and social critic widely viewed as the greatest novelist of the Victorian era. “In October 1843 he had the sudden inspiration of writing a Christmas story intended to open its readers' hearts towards those struggling to survive on the lower rungs of the economic ladder and to encourage practical benevolence but also to warn of the terrible danger to society created by the toleration of widespread ignorance and actual want among the poor. The result written at white heat was A Christmas Carol: in Prose published by Chapman and Hall on 19 December as a handsomely bound little volume which met with marked success. The first edition sold out by Christmas Eve. By 1844 the novella had gone through 13 printings. Myriad editions as well as stage and screen adaptations continue to accumulate with no apparent slackening of pace or interest over time. <br /> <br />Christmas Carol was only the first and foremost of several Christmas-themed stories. Dickens eventually produced five Christmas books. The Carol’s “more overtly political successor” The Chimes followed in December 1844 The Cricket on the Hearth in December 1845 and The Battle of Life in December 1846. Dickens’s fifth and final Christmas Book The Haunted Man was published in December 1848. <br /> <br />The Christmas books particularly The Chimes The Cricket and the Carol were the centerpiece of Dickens’ public reading tours in the 1850s and 60s. ‎I shall be glad to investigate the subject to which you so obligingly invite my attention myself." - <br />A 16 November 1868 autograph letter signed by Charles Dickens accepting the invitation of a doctor to tour East London a trip during which Dickens discovered and subsequently championed the newly-founded East London Children's Hospital‎

‎Gads Hill Place Kent 1868. This is a 16 November 1868 autograph letter signed by Charles Dickens 18 months before his death to a London doctor making arrangements to view a new children’s hospital. Dickens would ultimately champion the hospital in print helping raise funds for an eventual move. The letter is testimony that “At his death Dickens was regarded… not simply as a great writer but also as… a champion of the poor and downtrodden who had striven hard throughout his whole career for greater social justice and a better kinder world.” <br /> <br />The letter entirely in Dickens's hand on the recto of a single sheet of his “Gad’s Hill Place” stationery is dated “Monday Sixteenth November 1868” and written to “Dr. John Murray” addressed as “Dear Sir” but identified in Dickens’s hand at the lower left. The body of the letter reads: I shall be glad to investigate the subject to which you so obligingly invite my attention myself. Would it suit your convenience to take me with you next Saturday to some of the places where you have been most impressed by what you have seen If so have the kindness to let me know at what hour on Saturday you will call for me at the office of "all the Year Round" 26 Wellington Street Strand. If you will make your own appointment I will place myself at your disposal." The valediction in two lines reads: "Faithfully Yours" preceding the signature "Charles Dickens" with Dickens’s characteristic succession of multiple underlining flourishes. <br /> <br />The letter came to us framed from a private Dickens collection and has been framed for no less than 32 years; the sealed verso of the frame features the sticker of autograph dealer Paul C. Richards who died in 1993. The antique gilt wood frame measures 15.5 x 12.375 inches. The letter is double-matted to 6.5 x 4.5 inches in red over gilt beside and to the left of a photographic portrait of Dickens. <br /> <br />Though his name is not uncommon in London then or now we speculate that the recipient may have been surgeon John Murray 1798-1873. What is clear from the letter is that Murray caught the attention of Dickens that they met as planned and that as a result Dickens was prompted to take an active supporting interest in the East London Hospital for Children which had just been established that year in Ratcliffe Cross. In the 19 December issue of All the Year Round Dickens published an article in which he wrote at length in evocative Dickensian detail about the Hospital: “Down by the river’s bank in Ratcliffe… my eyes rested on the inscription across the road ‘East London Children’s Hospital.’ … I went across and went straight in… I found the Children’s Hospital established in an old sail-loft or storehouse of the roughest nature… In its seven-and-thirty beds I saw but little beauty… but I saw the sufferings both of infancy and childhood temporarily assuaged I heard the patients answering to pet playful names the light touch of a delicate lady laid bare the wasted sticks of arms for me to pity; and the claw-like little hands as she did so entwined themselves lovingly around her wedding-ring….” <br /> <br />Prior to publication of his article Dickens wrote again to Murray on the 1st of December specifically mentioning “my paper on the East London Children's’ Hospital” and informing Murray that he had sent a proof to the Hospital’s founders. <br /> <br />Dickens is credited for helping raise funds for the Hospital which after Dickens’s death facilitated the Hospital’s 1875 move to a new building in Shadwell. The hospital endured variously changing names and locations until the Second World War. <br /> <br />All the Year Round from whose offices Dickens began his tour with Dr. Murray and whose pages Dickens used to advocate for the East London Children’s Hospital was a weekly literary journal edited by Dickens that began publishing in 1859 and after his death was edited by his son Charles Dickens Jr. <br /> <br />Sources: ODNB; NHS Trust; Free Library of Philadelphia <br/><br/> unknown‎

As was custom with many Dickens novels the publisher Bradbury & Evans originally serialized Little Dorrit between December 1855 and June 1857 before publication in book form concurrent with the end of serialization on 30 May 1857. <br /> <br />The magnificent fine binding by Zaehnsdorf is full polished tan calf. The covers feature triple gilt rule borders with corner devices framing a blind-tooled inner border. The spine features raised bands green title label in the second compartment black author label in the fourth compartment and a narrow green “1857” date label at the spine heel each label gilt rule bracketed and tooled. Each unlabeled spine compartment features a central gilt rose motif framed by extensive gilt bracketing and tooling. The spine ends and cover edges are gilt-hatched. The contents are bound with red green and gold silk head and tail bands gilt top edges and marbled endpapers framed by gilt dentelle turn-ins. Condition of the binding is near fine sharp-cornered clean tight and square with sound joints and only trivial blemishes and scuffs. <br /> <br />Curiously “BOUND BY ZAEHNSDORF FOR G. P. PUTNAM'S SONS" is stamped on the lower left corner of the front free endpaper verso. The renowned Zaehnsdorf Bindery was founded in London in 1842 by Austria-Hungary-born Joseph Zaehnsdorf 1816-1886 and run by him his son and his grandson for over one hundred years. Asprey acquired Zaehnsdorf in 1983. Hence this binding predates Asprey's acquisition. The expressly stated commission of this binding by U.S. publisher G. P. Putnam's Sons is an intriguing mystery. On George Palmer Putnam's death in 1872 the business was inherited by his sons and the firm's name was changed to G. P. Putnam's Sons. It has been an imprint of The Penguin Group since 1996. <br /> <br />The near fine contents are well-suited to the binding clean and bright with no spotting soiling or previous ownership marks. Age-toning is mild evident only to the otherwise clean untrimmed fore and bottom edges. Following the text the original advertisements from the serialization are bound in at the rear between the original blue covers for Issue No. II of January 1856. <br /> <br />The book is housed in a quarter brown Morocco goatskin Solander with red Morocco spine label red buckram sides and felt-lined interior. Condition of the Solander is very good. <br /> <br />English writer and social critic Charles John Huffam Dickens 1812-1870 is widely regarded the greatest novelist of the Victorian era. Little Dorrit was published at the height of Dickens’ celebrity just before he began performing public readings of his works to an adoring public and shows the author’s confidence in the public appetite for his social criticism. Little Dorrit is “the saddest of all his novels and also according to Shaw 'a more seditious book than Das Kapital' Shaw on Dickens 51 bringing together scathing criticism of the country's governing institutions here represented by the all-powerful and all-pervading 'Circumlocution Office' a vivid portrayal in the story of Mrs Clennam of the harshly Calvinistic version of Christianity that was so strong in Victorian culture and a depiction of the public greed and gullibility that produces the frenzy of speculation associated with the activity of the swindling financier Mr. Merdle together with Dickens's deeper personal preoccupations about his childhood sufferings and his father's shaming imprisonment in the Marshalsea.” Dickens “Fresh from lambasting the judicial system in Bleak House here went after the machinery of government through his portrayal of the “Circumlocution Office” staffed entirely by a dynasty of Barnacles positively thriving on the business of chaos. The binding is contemporary 19th century diced brown calf the covers featuring gilt rule borders the spines featuring raised gilt-decorated bands separating five compartments the 1st 3rd and 5th featuring extensive gilt tooling the 2nd and 4th printed respectively with the title and volume number on darker brown calf labels. The contents of each volume are bound with silk head and foot bands all edges gilt and marbled endpapers. <br /> <br />The first edition contents are collated complete. H. K. Browne “Phiz” and and George Cattermole prepared illustrations for this work which were engraved on wood by E. Landells C. Gray Vasey and S. Williams and integrated into the text. There is also a single illustration each prepared by Daniel Maclise and Samuel Williams. Most of the figure pieces were done by Browne while Cattermole was entrusted with the architectural subjects. All small misprints “Internal flaws” called for by Smith I 6. pp.49-55 are present. <br /> <br />Condition is very good. Each volume has been very neatly and unobtrusively rebacked retaining the original spines. We note moderate wear to the edges of the boards joints and spine ends modest spine rubbing and minor small scuffs and blemishes to the boards. The contents show no previous ownership marks. Age-toning is light as is spotting which is primarily confined to the first and final leaves otherwise scant and intermittent within. The gilt page edges remain bright. Each volume is protected beneath a clear removable mylar cover. <br /> <br />Master Humphrey’s Clock was originally published in 88 weekly numbers spanning 4 April 1840 to 27 November 1841. After the monthly parts Master Humphrey’s Clock was issued thus in three volumes the first volume published mid-October 1840 the second on mid-April 1841 the third mid-December 1841. <br /> <br />In Master Humphrey’s Clock Dickens 1812-1870 not yet 30 was experimenting. He originally set out to write a series of shifting stories and characters centered around Master Humphrey an old man with a longcase antique clock and his coterie of friends and their manuscripts. What began as an intended series of stories became instead two different successive serialized novels contained within the framework of the Master Humphrey conception. “Initial sales were very large but quickly declined when the public realized the Clock was not to be a continuous story.” Dickens quickly adapted developing one of a series of intended stories into a full-length story “and this under the title The Old Curiosity Shop soon took over the entire publication…. By the end of the story's serialization in the Clock 6 February 1841 the circulation had reached a phenomenal 100000 copies. “The Shop was immediately succeeded in the Clock by the long projected Barnaby Rudge Dickens's first historical novel dealing with the anti-Catholic Gordon riots of 1780 and written in conscious emulation of Scott which saw out the rest of the serial installments.” <br /> <br />Concurrent with publication of the third and final volume of Master Humphrey’s Clock The Old Curiosity Shop and Barnaby Rudge were published as separate novels in mid-December 1841 each in one volume. <br /> <br />Reference: Smith I 6; ODNB <br/><br/> Chapman & Hall hardcover‎

‎<p>88 weekly parts with three frontispieces and numerous wood engravings in the text by George Cattermole Hablot K. Browne and others. Quarto 10 1/2" x 7" bound in publisher's 88 original pictorial weekly parts in printed white self-wrappers uncut housed green cloth slipcase and chemise. Eckel pp. 61-65; Hatton & Cleaver pp. 161-182 First edition first issue.</p><p>With preliminaries frontispiece title-page and Preface for the three volume edition present in numbers 26 52 and 88; addresses by the author in parts 9 80-83 and 87; a tipped in advertisement to pt. 62 for <em>Chambers's Journal of Literature Poetry Biography and Adventure</em>. Each weekly part was issued as a single folded sheet of 16 pages 4 of which formed the outer wrapper around 12 numbered pages of letterpress. "Of the four issues the weekly one is difficult to obtain in a clean condition and is therefore the costliest" Eckel. All 88 parts include front wrappers with an engraved design by George Cattermole which was engraved in wood by E. Landells. One of the first works to be published in both weekly and monthly parts</p><p><em>Master Humphrey's Clock</em> was a weekly periodical edited and written entirely by Charles Dickens and published from 4 April 1840 to 4 December 1841. It began with a frame story in which Master Humphrey tells about himself and his small circle of friends and their penchant for telling stories. Several short stories were included followed by the novels <em>The Old Curiosity Shop</em> and <em>Barnaby Rudge</em>. It is generally thought that Dickens originally intended <em>The Old Curiosity Shop</em> as a short story like the others that had appeared in <em>Master Humphrey's Clock</em> but after a few chapters decided to extend it into a novel. Master Humphrey appears as the first-person narrator in the first three chapters of <em>The Old Curiosity Shop</em> but then disappears stating "And now that I have carried this history so far in my own character and introduced these personages to the reader I shall for the convenience of the narrative detach myself from its further course and leave those who have prominent and necessary parts in it to speak and act for themselves."<br /><br />Master Humphrey is a lonely man who lives in London. He keeps old manuscripts in an antique longcase clock by the chimney-corner. One day he decides that he would start a little club called Master Humphrey's Clock where the members would read out their manuscripts to the others. The members include Master Humphrey; a deaf gentleman; Jack Redburn; retired merchant Owen Miles; and Mr. Pickwick from <em>The Pickwick Papers</em>. A mirror club in the kitchen <em>Mr. Weller's Watch</em> run by Mr. Weller has members including Humphrey's maid the barber and Sam Weller.<br /><br /><em>Master Humphrey's Clock</em> appeared after <em>The Old Curiosity Shop</em> to introduce Barnaby Rudge. After Barnaby Rudge Master Humphrey is left by himself by the chimney corner in a train of thoughts. Here the deaf gentleman continues the narration. Later the deaf gentleman and his friends return to Humphrey's house to find him dead. Humphrey has left money for the barber and the maid no doubt by traces of love that they would be married. Redburn and the deaf gentleman look after the house and the club closes for good.<br /><br />In the portion of<em> Master Humphrey's Clock</em> which succeeds The Old Curiosity Shop Master Humphrey reveals to his friends that he is the character referred to as the 'single gentleman' in that story.</p><p><strong>Condition: </strong></p><p>Some soiling and chipping a few soft creases some chipping and light soiling a few leaves becoming detached Slipcase with some rubbing to edges else very good in like slipcase.</p> Chapman and Hall paperback‎
