Each volume features numerous full-page illustrations by Marcus Stone. A terrific condition set.<br /><br />Condition:<br />Overall the set is in Fine condition. Both volumes are in excellent condition both inside and out and appear unread. Both volumes are tightly bound with no cracks and no loose pages. All covers are firmly attached. The pages are clean with no notable issues found. Many pages are still attached along the top edge. Both front end papers have a name/address written in old handwriting. All edges with contemporary marbling. Modern marbled endpapers. Frontispiece title page vignette and 38 full-page illustrations by H.K. Browne. A very good copy indeed the binding square and firm. The contents with the inevitable darkening of the plate edges with some offsetting to the opposite pages are otherwise clean throughout. The original blank front endpaper has the ownership inscription of the famous English cricketer Heathfield H. Stephenson dated 1894. A curious and appealing cricketing association copy. With all first issue points within the text present. Smith part I: 6b Charles Dickens' works are among the most celebrated in the English literary canon but cricket fans might argue that his greatest achievement was inadvertently triggering the long international cricket rivalry of England and Australia.&#0;The first ever England vs Australia tour was originally conceived as a Victorian PR stunt and sponsorship opportunity by two entrepreneurial Melbourne-based businessmen the wine merchants Felix William Spiers and Christopher Pond. Having failed to persuade Charles Dickens to conduct a lecture tour of Australia the two Englishmen turned their attention to cricket. The sport's popularity was growing in Australia so Spiers and Pond invited a team of leading English cricketers to tour the country. Twelve players signed up for the tour. Named "The Eleven of All England" or "H. H. Stephenson's XI" after the English Captain Heathfield Harman Stephenson they each received £150 first class passage aboard SS Great Britain costing 70 guineas plus all expenses.&#0;The inaugural English tour of Australia was a great success promoting the development of Australian cricket and inspiring later English teams to visit Australia. Wikipedia says: "Joseph Clayton Clark 1857 - 8 August 1937 who worked under the pseudonym "Kyd" was a British artist best known for his illustrations of characters from the novels of Charles Dickens. The artwork was published in magazines or sold as watercolor paintings rather than included in an edition of the novels." Fine bright picture in fine condition but not examined out of the frame. ‎'Kensal Manor House / Harrow Road. / May 19th. 1846.'. The subject of this article is discussed by William M. Johnston in his article ‘William Kinglake’s “A Summer in Russiaâ€: A Neglected Memoir of Saint Petersburgh in 1845’ TSLL Spring 1967. The memoir was published anonymously by Ainsworth in the New Monthly Magazine of which he was editor and proprietor in three parts but a German translation in the same year revealed Kinglake’s identity. See the entries for Ainsworth and Kinglake in the Oxford DNB. An interesting letter casting light on Victorian journalistic practices. 4pp 12mo. Forty lines of text. On a bifolium. In fair condition aged and worn with strips of paper adhering to blank areas at head and foot of the reverse of the second leaf. Folded for postage. The recipient is not named. Signed ‘W. Harrison Ainsworth.’ Begins: ‘My dear Sir. I received your Russian Tour at breakfast this morning and since then I have read it with great interest - an unusual instance for me for extensive familiarity with manuscripts has not tended to increase my partiality for them. But your paper is not only well written but very lively and amusing and I have got through it with great satisfaction to myself. Under these circumstances you will not wonder that I gladly accept it for the New Monthly; and I only regret that I cannot owing to the Magazine. being already made up commence in next No.’ He will however ‘send the paper incontinently to the Printer with directions to him to forward proofs’ to the writer’s address. He suggests dividing the paper ‘into chapters with separate headings’. He asks how he proposes to ‘entitle it’ and whether he wishes to attach his name to it. He would be pleased to make his acquaintance and suggests that they dine at the Parthenon Club in Regent Street the following Friday ‘when we can talk matters over’.
