‎3 Serjeant's Inn London. 9 January 1841. 1p 16mo. On 14 x 11 cm piece of paper with margins apparently cut down. Aged and with slight damage to two words of text caused by removal from mount. At the time of writing Faucit's successful career had been interrupted by the recurrence of a lung condition necessitating recuperation at a seaside resort. She has evidently asked Talfourd to contribute to an autograph album soliciting the following response: 'Mr. Serjeant Talfourd presents his best compliments to Miss Helen Faucit and has endeavoured to comply with her flattering wish by adding to her collection of admiring tributes some poor verses which express sincere wishes; - and only regrets that her present state of health should impart more earnestness to these wishes than consists with entire pleasure in expressing them. He trusts however that he shall very soon have the satisfaction of knowing that in her perfect restoration to health his wishes and those of all who know her are fulfilled.' 3 Serjeant's Inn [London]. 9 January 1841. unknown‎

‎[Ballooning and Victorian Music Hall; Harry Sydney, music hall artiste and songwriter; Charles Dickens and 'Household Words']:‎

‎Ballooning and Victorian Music Hall. Anonymous Manuscript of the lyrics of two comic songs: 'Balooning sic' inspired by a piece in Charles Dickens's 'Household Words' and Harry Sydney's 'It's just as well to take it in a quiet sort of way'.‎

‎Without place or date. London Circa 1865. 3pp. foolscap 8vo. On a bifolium of laid paper. In fair condition aged and worn. The first poem 'Balooning sic' covers both sides of the first leaf. No evidence has been discovered that this poem was ever published but it is inspired by the exploits of 'Mr. Green' in a humorous essay titled 'Ballooning' which appeared in Charles Dickens's 'Household Words' on 25 October 1851. The choice of two phrases 'pipes & backy' and 'Mounted Meershaums' is given in the present manuscript these variants perhaps suggesting that this item is authorial rather than a transcription. The second poem which covers the recto of the second leaf the verso being undated is untitled in the manuscript but is Harry Sydney's 'It's just as well to take it in a quiet sort of way' which was published in 1865 in London by Henri D'Alcorn George Henry Stannard Allcorn. ONE: 'Balooning sic'. 2pp. The poem is forty-eight lines long divided into twelve stanzas each stanza followed by the refrain 'Fal de ral.' The present poem begins: '1st. Verse When the London people used to think of going out of Town They'd take a Stage & that would to the Country take 'em down But Mister Green has lately proved as clear's the sun at noon The finest way to take the air is to take an air balloon - Fal de lal. 2. The other day when Mister Green went out just for a fly He took up two companions for a ride towards the sky Though Lords & Butler thus ventured up they found the difference soon For they were all reduced to Carmen when they rode in the Balloon Fal de ral.' The poem describes their journey made without 'fears of Highwaymen'. In the ninth stanza the travellers 'take their pipes & backy out' and the word 'backy' is glossed with the variant reading for 'pipes & backy' at the foot of the second page: 'Mounted Meershaums out.' The final stanza reads: '12. Now we find that different trav'lers will travel diff'rent ways Some like a railroad some a stage & some a Horse & Chaise Some being fond of water think a steam boat quite exquisite But there's nothing like an air balloon to pay a flying visit. Fal de ral'. TWO: Untitled Harry Sydney's 'It's just as well to take it in a quiet sort of way'. 1p. Twenty-four lines in eight stanzas. Begins: '1 We smile at the unnecessary trouble people take For fortune is not regulated by the fuss we make. I don't advise indifference but this I mean to say: Its just as well to take things in a quiet sort of way.' The poem was hugely popular being described as 'a certain sort of comic singing which I can't stand' by a character in Fun magazine 2 September 1865. The American impressario Tony Pastor 1837-1908 published a version of the poem in New York in 1868 without the following stanza of the present manuscript: 'To rise in your opinion most earnestly I hope But promise you I'll never mount the trapeze or the rope: I fancy in the long run that common sense will pay; And its just as well to take things in a quiet sort of way.' Without place or date. [London? Circa 1865.] unknown‎

‎Samuel Lover (1797-1868), Irish miniature painter, author, songwriter and singer, friend of Charles Dickens [Sir Thomas Gery Cul‎

‎Samuel Lover Irish painter author entertainer. Autograph Letter in third person to Sir Thomas Gery Cullum and wife explaining why pressures of 'public engagement' mean he must stay at his hotel rather than enjoy 'the hospitality of Hardwicke'.‎

‎26 February 1845; Bell Hotel Bury St Edmunds. According to his entry in the Oxford DNB 'In 1844 Lover abandoned miniature painting as a result of failing eyesight but continued to paint and exhibit landscapes. He invented a new form of entertainment which he called Irish Evenings a monologue of songs recitations and stories all of his own composition. These he performed at the Princess's Concert Rooms London.' Between 1846 and 1848 he toured North America with great success. 3pp 12mo. Bifolium. In good condition lightly aged with minor traces of mount adhering to blank reverse of second leaf. Folded twice. The letter begins: 'Mr. Lover with much respect and sincere thanks to Sir Thomas & Lady Cullum for the honor they so kindly propose to him regrets that the shortness of his stay and urgency of his occupation interfere to prevent his enjoying the pleasure which the acceptance of Sir Thomas and Lady Cullum's invitation would cause him.' He explains that he has sung 'at Hanover Square Rooms on Monday – at Cambridge last night and after travelling to-day and his exertion of this evening with an early entertaintment sic tomorrow before him – an immediate retirement to rest after this evenings exertion is indispensible'. Consequently he must 'content himself with the Hotel of Bury – instead of enjoying the honor of the hospitality of Hardwicke sic'. He hopes that 'Sir Thomas will assure Mr. Petre how sensible Mr Lover is of the honor of his invitation but as Mr. Lover is obliged on his days of public engagement to dine very early and very sparingly he cannot have the pleasure of being made Mr. Petre's guest'. 26 February 1845; Bell Hotel, Bury St Edmunds. unknown‎

‎William Moy Thomas (1828–1910), journalist, theatre critic, novelist and associate of Charles Dickens [Sir John Hare (1844-1921)‎

‎William Moy Thomas theatre critic and associate of Charles Dickens. Autograph Draft signed with initials 'W M T' of long 'Letter to Hare i.e. actor-manager John Hare about Grundy's Comedy An Old Jew produced at the Garrick Janry 6 1894'.‎

‎At head of first page: 'Copy January 16 1894'. A highly interesting letter from a leading Victorian dramatic critic Thomas describes himself in the letter as 'For five & twenty years . theatrical critic of the Daily news & the Graphic' who has 'served under at least thirteen editors' to a leading actor-manager Hare was knighted in 1907 on the subject of alleged editorial pressure on Fleet Street's theatre critics. 4pp 8vo. On four leaves. Aged and worn but with text complete and clear. Thomas has noted on the reverse of the last leaf: 'Letter to Hare about Grundy's Comedy An Old Jew produced at the Garrick Janry 6 1894.' Grundy wrote 'An Old Jew' for Hare who portrayed the main character Julius Sterne. Draft of long letter with numerous minor emendations. He was glad to read Hare's letter despite its 'lingering trace of the languor of the sick room'. 'To me so many years your senior it seems strange indeed to find you speaking of the close of your stage career. I can only say on that head that I hope to live to see you for many more years gathering fresh laurels'. On the subject of Grundy's play he states that he does not believe that 'the journalistic world has any claim to be exempt from the satire or even the extreme caricature which is freely allowed in the case of other classes. Literary cliques & côteries undoubtedly do exist as they existed in the days of Delatouche's Tour de Faveur & Delavigne's Comédiens and Scribe's Camaraderie'. He deplores critics who 'will now fall down & worship certain Scandinavian idols & their crude & offensive methods'. He cannot conceive of 'editors who give instructions to critics to denounce plays contrary to their real opinions'. He can 'only say that I have never met with any such editor. For five & twenty years I have been the theatrical critic of the Daily news & the Graphic & for some years of that time I occupied the same post on The Academy besides writing drama notices occasionally for other journals. Altogether I have served under at least thirteen editors and I can conscientiously affirm that never did any one of these attempt to entice me to speak ill of what I thought or might think a good paly or performance or vice versâ.' After some more observations he concludes: 'Depend upon it the whole thing will be forgotten ere long or remembered only to excite wonder that any sensible journalist of decent standing should have made a fuss about it'. At head of first page: 'Copy | January 16, 1894'. unknown‎

‎Sir Nigel Playfair actor-manager of the Lyric Theatre Hammersmith. Autograph Signature 'Nigel Playfair' on the programme for the lyric production '"When Crummles Played -"' based on characters from 'Nicholas Nickleby' by Charles Dickens.‎

Four-page programme on bifolium stapled into covers of shiny art paper. In fair condition worn and aged with rusted staples. Folded once. The covers are printed on the outside only. On the front are two illustrations in Georgian style with the caption 'George Barnwell's Contrition'. On the back is a drawing of 'Portsmouth Old Theatre' 'Reproduced by kind permission of Arthur Moreland.' The small signature 'Nigel Playfair' is at top right of front cover. The first page of the programme carries five 'Producer's Notes' by 'Lessee & Manager' Playfair. The production is based on the conceit that the audience are watching the Crummles Company performing George Lillo's 'George Barnwell or The London Merchant'. In his third note Playfair writes: 'I do not intend the audience to think that the Crummles Company were bad actors in their fashion for I do not suppose they were: nor that Lillo wrote a bad play for I am sure this is not the case. If they do my production will have failed. It is in the surprises created by the surroundings and the conventions of the period that there will be I hope much to laugh at though with sympathy rather than derision.' The fourth note includes the statement 'This entertainment is not intended for Archaeologists - as such - except in the Pickwickian sense.' The last three pages of the programme give the usual details of cast and crew performance songs credits. Towards end: 'Ladies are respectfully requested to remove their hats and so add to the comfort of all.' The production ends with a 'Harlequinade' and the fifth note concerns Grimaldi. The text of Playfair's production was published by Chapman & Hall in 1927 but no other copy of this programme is to be found on OCLC WorldCat. The Lyric Theatre, Hammersmith, W.6.
