Some foxing to contents darkening to plates and occasional corner creasing. Slight lean to first volume. Lovely grain of cloth with hardly any rubbing truly superior in this respect and gilt lettering still quite distinct despite the years. Housed in a custom slipcase.<br /> <p>The famous Victorian novelist's very first book largely comprised of humorous short pieces that had been printed in magazines the past three years. This is a complete 19 Volume set of "HOUSEHOLD WORDS" - A Weekly Journal by Charles Dickens. The volumes span the years 1850 Volume I to 1859 Volume XIX. The significance of this set is that Volume IX contains the 1st appearance of the Dickens classic "HARD TIMES" please see photos. "Hard Times was first published serially in "Household Words" in the April 1 1854 issue volume IX followed shortly thereafter by the 1st edition in book form in the same year. Seldom found complete in 19 Volumes.<br /><br />"Household Words" was an English weekly magazine edited by Charles Dickens and was published every Saturday from March 1850 to May 1859. This set contains 19 hardcover volumes which contain the complete run of individual issues. To boost slumping sales Dickens serialized his classic novel "Hard Times" in weekly parts between April 1st and August 12th 1854. It had the desired effect more than doubling the journal's circulation and encouraging Dickens who remarked that he was "three parts mad and the fourth delirious with perpetual rushing at Hard Times."<br /><br />Condition:<br />Overall the set is in terrific condition with only light wear as would be expected. The most notable condition flaw with this set is that the front cover of Volume III is present but detached; also there is a 1" area on the spine of volumes III and XVI where the leather has flaked off please see photo #1.otherwise the set is in great condition with only expected wear. The pages are in overall excellent condition with only occasional foxing. Some volumes have a name written in pen on the front end paper. The volumes are tightly bound. Signed by artist John Austen and hand-numbered 1148 on rear endpaper of volume 2. This edition was limited to 1500 copies. Green paper boards of slipcase are heavily stained and edges are rubbed and frayed. A split seam has been repaired with glue. Dust jackets are both heavily chipped on spines with chunks missing from lower spine. Spines are toned and there is lighter chipping around edges. Brown cloth boards and bindings of both volumes are good. Page edges are foxed. Pages are clean and unmarked with light toning. LO Oxford hardcover

London: The Educational Book Co. Ltd. 1910. There are no dates in the volumes I examined. 1910 seems to be about right. This makes it more or less a "Centenary Edition" since C D was born in 1812 and the publishers would have wanted to get it finished in time for the Centenary my guess. I am not sure from where they get "1200 Illustrations". It seems only the 500 done by H F made it into the books. The condition is surprising and outstanding. The volumes have certainly never been read except for me dipping into Oliver Twist. The main "Fault" which is hardly such is a gentle uniform yellowing. 5 raised bands with elaborate intertwining leaves occupy 4 compartments; gold titles the other 2. Gold "C D" on the front cover; top edge gold; original reinforced interior hinges; "marbled" endpapers appear to be of the printed variety and are slightly foxed around the margins. All gold is bright and fresh. My price matches another similar set on in June 2015. Postage for 18 books will be far in excess of Abe's quote but I am prepared to subsidise some cost of postage overseas if you contact me direct. Please see my listings for other editions of C D. Memoirs of Joseph Grimaldi
This is an early copy of the "Memoirs of Joseph Grimaldi" edited by Charles Dickens as "BOZ". 1838 2nd American edition 2nd state; William H. Colyer; New York. Complete in one volume. With an early frontispiece lithograph of Grimaldi by Nathaniel Currier of "Currier and Ives" notoriety with tissue guard. Joseph Grimaldi was an English actor comedian and dancer who became the most popular English entertainer of the Regency era.<br /><br />The "Memoirs of Joseph Grimaldi" was edited by a young Charles Dickens only two years after the publication of his first major literary work "The Pickwick Papers." The text presented to Dickens was a long discursive manuscript which he edited and rewrote heavily. He also wrote the "Introductory Chapter" and possibly the "Concluding Chapter" as well. This 2nd American edition copy was published the same year as 1st American edition which was originally published in 2 volumes.<br /><br />Condition:<br />Light dime-sized stain on the front cover. Portions of the top paper are missing in some areas on the covers. Wear along the board edges. The label on the spine is missing. Tight binding with no loose pages. Mild foxing to the pages; no writing found; the first 2 blank end papers have a tiny piece missing at the outer edge. William H. Colyer hardcover
