[Dickens, Charles] Sparjs, Timothy
Sunday Under Three Heads
London: J.W. Jarvis & Som 1884. Small pamphlet bound in gray printed wrappers. 49 pages. Dickens wrote this short piece under the pseudonym Timothy Sparks in 1836. As per Eckels' the present copy does not have the chapter heading 'Sunday Under Three Heads' on page 35 and was issued with a gray outer wrapper. Collation: Printed front wrap with title/author/fac-simile statement/publisher; publisher's statement inside cover; i-ii intro dated Feb. 1st 1884 credited to T. J. Wise iii-iv fac-simile of original engraved title-page with blank verso; v-vi blank; vii-x half-title/ frontispiece/ title/ blank; xi-xiv dedication; pp. 1-49 including two engravings unpaginated; 2 blanks advert for Pickwick Paper; last 5 pages Jarvis adverts including rear cover. Owing to the abruptness of the hill behind the town there is a street along the edge of a bluff from which you can look directly down upon all that part of the city which lies low near the level of the rivers. On the evening of this dark day we were conducted to the edge of the abyss and looked over the iron railing upon the most striking spectacle we ever beheld. The entire space lying between the hills was filled with blackest smoke from out of which the hidden chimneys sent forth tongues of flame while from the depths of the abyss came up the noise of hundreds of steam-hammers. There would be moments when no flames were visible; but soon the wind would force the smoky curtains aside and the whole black expanse would be dimly lighted with dull wreaths of fire. It is an unprofitable business view-hunting; but if any one would enjoy a spectacle as striking as Niagara he may do so by simply walking up a long hill to Cliff Street in Pittsburg and looking over into—hell with the lid taken off. Such is the kind of day of which Pittsburg boasts. The first feeling of the stranger is one of compassion for the people who are compelled to live in such an atmosphere. When hard pressed a son of Pittsburg will not deny that the smoke has its inconveniences. He admits that it does prevent some inconsiderate people from living there who but for the prejudice against smoke in which they have been educated would become residents of the place. He insists however that the smoke of bituminous coal kills malaria and saves the eyesight.

Flotsam and Jetsam by Harriet Prescott Spofford - First Printing

Does it Pay To Smoke by James Parton - First Printing

The By-Ways of Europe by Bayard Taylor - First Printing - Balearic Islands Catalonian Bridle-Roads Republic of Pyrenees The Kyffhauser and its Legends A Week on Capri

European House-Sparrow by T.M.Brewer page 583 to 588 First Printing

Discovery of Etherization anaesthetic influence of ether fumes; anaesthetize Charles T. Adelaide Anne Procter London 1825-1864 wrote under the pseudonym Mary Berwick. With the exception of some early poems in Cornhill Magazine and Good Words her first published work appeared in Household Words or All the Year Round and was here discovered by its editor Charles Dickens who later identified the writing as that of the daughter of his friend and poet Barry Cornwall Bryan Waller Procter. This volume of Legends and Lyrics contains her popular verse in its entirety as noted in Dickens' introduction. Miss Proctor if not a great poet had a gift for verse and expressed herself with distinction charm and sincerity'. She borrowed little or nothing and showed to best advantage in her narrative poems.' An ardent feminist Proctor was appointed by the council of the National Association for the Promotion of Social Science as a committee member to consider new alternatives of providing employment for women. In 1861 she edited "Victoria Regia"; a volume of verse and prose set up in type by women compositors. The proceeds from her volume of poems 'A Chaplet of Verse' helped fund a women's night refuge. DNB; Eckel 163-164. Cloth George Bell and Sons, hardcover
