A handsome set of the famous "Illustrated Library Edition" here in an early printing. The dedication at the front of the first volume Pickwick Papers states "This the best edition of my books is of right inscribed to my dear friend John Forster biographer of Oliver Goldsmith in affectionate acknowledgment of his counsel sympathy and faithful friendship during my whole literary life." "The Library Edition came about largely because of the suggestion of Forster that while Dickens's works were available in volumes in the Cheap Edition and in reprints of the serial parts there was no high-quality edition that would appeal to the wealthy. Dickens eventually came round to the idea that an elegant edition could raise the stature of his writings. He faced a complication in that the rights to the works were divided between Chapman and Hall and Bradbury and Evans. Consequently the volumes contained the imprints of both publishers. With a dedication to Forster the Library Edition appeared in 22 volumes in 1858-9 at 7s 6d per volume. "Titles included Pickwick Nickleby Chuzzlewit Old Curiosity Shop Reprinted Pieces Barnaby Rudge Hard Times Sketches by Boz Oliver Twist Dombey Copperfield Pictures from Italy Bleak House Little Dorrit and Christmas Books. The only illustrations were the frontispieces. Between 1861 and 1874 this edition was reissued in 30 volumes with the addition of Tale of Two Cities Great Expectations Our Mutual Friend The Uncommercial Traveller A Child's History of England Christmas Stories and Drood. The reissue contained illustrations—the frontispieces plus additional illustrations by artists such as Marcus Stone John Leech and Clarkson Stanfield—and came to be known as the Illustrated Library Edition. Recognizing the continuing potential for sales of Dickens's works Chapman and Hall in 1873 published a prospectus for the Second Illustrated Library Edition containing they contended all the works the novelist wished to preserve. Calling it the first well-printed issue with specially cast type and better paper than that used in previous editions this set was published in 30 volumes between 1873 and 1876 and sold at £15 for the set a high price for the time" Oxford Reader's Companion to Dickens pp. 205-206. Sketches of Young Couples: With an Urgent Remonstrance to the Gentlemaen of England Being Bachelors or Widowers on the Present Alarming Crisis
Londion: Chapman and Hall 1840 1840. Three quarter blue leather over marbled paper covered boards. Raised spine decorated in gilt. This slim volume was orginally issued in fragile pictorial grey-green wrappers which are now very scarce. The present binding is by Blackwell with new marbled endpapers to match paper on covers and bound without ads and half- title as per usual. All edges gilt 6 illustrations by "Phiz" Hablot Knight Browne. But for very mild incidental rubbing to heel of backstrip a very fine copy with text free from foxing and plates very clean. Inside front cover exhibits book plate of previous owner. This was the "second collection of 'humerous' papers by Dickens" as Eckel writes the first being "Sketches of Young Gentlemen" published two years earlier in 1838. A scarce early Dickens peice in very nice condition. Podeschi B87; Smith II p.3-7; Carr B474; Eckel p. 106-7. First Edition. Very Good. 16mo - over 5¾" - 6¾" tall. Chapman and Hall, 1840 hardcover

This volume consists of three volumes of "Sketches"-- of Young Ladies of Young Gentlemen and of Young Couples. As explained in the publisher's advertisement "Sketches of Young Ladies was actually written in the 1830's by another writer with the nom de plume of 'Quiz'; Dickens then wrote the other two published in England in 1838 and 1840 respectively. This volume includes the original volumes' illustrations by 'Phiz' Hablot K. Browne. Front pastedwon bears an old school award label and front endpaper is cracked. Else a fine copy in the original cloth quite uncommon in this condition and in this variant binding as most copies are found in the green cloth. No prioirty given in Gimbel. Podeschi D73. London: Chapman and Hall 1850. First printing of the cheap edition for Dickens first complete works with a new preface penned by the author and dated June 22 1850. Olive green blindstamped cloth with elaborately gilt spine. Frontispiece by C Stanfield. Printed in double column format. Fronitispiece badly foxed else interior quite clean. No name or book plate. Green cloth toned to light brown at edges and backstrip; spine slightly cocked. Overall a nice copy of Dickens recollections of his first American sojourn. First published in 1842 AMERICAN NOTES was a harsh travel narrative condemning much that Dicken's found wanting in the New World from the state of rail travel to the rather uncouth habit of spitting. Its reception by American critics was quite unfavorable and it gave rise to many parodies by American author's who took umbrage to its tone and content. First Thus. Cloth. Holden and Beverly Chew on the collecting world has been great and their constant stand for all that is best in book-building has helped to mould American standards in such matters." - Introduction to the 1924 auction catalogue of Chews' library. This frontispiece was drawn by Clarkson Stanfield R.A. and engraved by Edwin Davis French from the original which was owned by Dickens. Dickens sailed in "Britannia" for his first visit to North America. The top cover features in gilt a facsimile of a portion of the holograph of Dickens' letter. London: The Piccadilly Fountain Press 1932. Original gilt lettered green cloth. With 43 illustrations by R. Seymour R. W. Buss and "Phiz" after the original engravings plus reproductions of parts of the manuscript. Volume 1 no longer has a dust jacket and its rear board is noticeably stained and spotted. Light bumping to head and foot of spines lower edge of rear board of volume 2 cloth cover is slightly split leading corners and lower inside corner of vol. 2. Minimal rubbing to the extremities and the spines remain very tight indeed. Volume 2's blue dust jacket is grubby and water damaged with significant wear and chipping and tears along the edges. Age spotting to page block endpapers and plates. All of the pages are intact. Age stain on endpapers. Text remains clear and binding is tight throughout. Pages are slightly tanned. Page edges are roughly cut. Many sections in Vol 2 are uncut. Some light foxing to page edges. Overall in pretty good shape. T. Hardcover. Good/Good. Illus. by Seymour R.; Buss R. W.; "Phiz". Used. No contemporary English edition accompanied the American publication and it was not until 1899 that a separate book editio n was privately printed in Great Britain. Rebound in full red crushed morocco with double sets of gold rules and gilt floral decorations at corners. Elaborately gilt inner dentelles and new marbled en dpapers. Signed binding by BirdBall of Northhampton and London. Spine blackened and worn with "C" in Child"s partially obscured. Illustrated with 11 engravings by Hammatt Billings. A.e.g. Printed on rectos only with all plates appearing on versos of blank page. Original cloth cover and backstrip bound in at rear.
