charles dickens
the life and adventures of Martin Chuzzlewitt 1844 first edition
London: chapman hall 1844. Book. Illus. by Phiz. Fine. Hardcover. 4to - over 9¾ - 12" tall. From 1844 a remarkably great fine leather-bound first edition The Life and Adventures of Martin Chuzzlewit as published by Chapman & Hall London. Beautifully bound in fine full polished calf leather by a top British binder. 9x6 inches 624 pages. Illustrated with the 39 fine prints by "Phiz" Hablot K. Browne. Near fine condition with a marbled page block. Beautifully gilt decorated on the spine with a red leather spine label. We note copies of this book listed online at over $2000. Our copy has virtually no wear. A near fine example. Dickens changed the plot to send the title character to America. This allowed the author to portray the United States which he had visited in 1842 satirically as a near wilderness with pockets of civilisation filled with deceptive and self-promoting hucksters. The main theme of the novel according to a preface by Dickens is selfishness portrayed in a satirical fashion using all the members of the Chuzzlewit family. The novel is also notable for two of Dickens' great villains Seth Pecksniff and Jonas Chuzzlewit. It is dedicated to Angela Georgina Burdett-Coutts a friend of Dickens. chapman hall Hardcover

Dickens, Charles, C K Chesterton, (Intro, 1931) and Gordon Ross, (Illus)
The Posthumous Papers of the Pickwick Club aka The Pickwick Papers w/ Collectors Notes lizx
Norwalk Connecticut: The Easton Press 1964. Collector's Edition. Full Calf. VG Very Good. Octavo 23cm/9.25inches full gilt-embossed British blue calf sans dust jacket -as issued- pp. 764. Illustrations by Gordon Ross. "Collectors Notes Included Please feel free to inquire as to particulars and/or additional photographs. . The Pickwick Papers was Charles Dickens's first novel. Because of his success with Sketches by Boz published in 1836 Dickens was asked by the publisher Chapman & Hall to supply descriptions to explain a series of comic "cockney sporting plates" by illustrator Robert Seymour and to connect them into a novel. The book became Britain's first real publishing phenomenon with bootleg copies theatrical performances Sam Weller joke books and other merchandise. On its cultural impact Nicholas Dames in The Atlantic writes Literature is not a big enough category for Pickwick. It defined its own a new one that we have learned to call entertainment. Published in 19 issues over 20 months the success of The Pickwick Papers popularised serialised fiction and cliffhanger endings.

The Easton Press unknown
