Jackets are damaged with large missing sections to the rear of volume I and a smaller missing section the spine foot on volume II. Both are in protective sleeves. Boards are very clean with only lighlty compressed spine ends and minor edge rubbing. Internally there is some foxing to both volumes but the text and excellent illustrations are bright and clear. This is an early copy of the "Memoirs of Joseph Grimaldi" edited by Charles Dickens as "BOZ". 1838 2nd American edition 2nd state; William H. Colyer; New York. Complete in one volume. With an early frontispiece lithograph of Grimaldi by Nathaniel Currier of "Currier and Ives" notoriety with tissue guard. Joseph Grimaldi was an English actor comedian and dancer who became the most popular English entertainer of the Regency era.<br /><br />The "Memoirs of Joseph Grimaldi" was edited by a young Charles Dickens only two years after the publication of his first major literary work "The Pickwick Papers." The text presented to Dickens was a long discursive manuscript which he edited and rewrote heavily. He also wrote the "Introductory Chapter" and possibly the "Concluding Chapter" as well. This 2nd American edition copy was published the same year as 1st American edition which was originally published in 2 volumes.<br /><br />Condition:<br />Light dime-sized stain on the front cover. Portions of the top paper are missing in some areas on the covers. Wear along the board edges. The label on the spine is missing. Tight binding with no loose pages. Mild foxing to the pages; no writing found; the first 2 blank end papers have a tiny piece missing at the outer edge. William H. Colyer hardcover

Small collector's label at top of front pastedown. SCARCE edition of a fugitive Dickens' publication dealing with New Zealand. From the Black Rocks first appeared in May 1862 in Dickens's All the Year Round. The 1950 'new' edition on display was published by A. H. Reed who was curious as to who wrote it. The story concerns 'Henry' a clergyman living among Ngapuhi and his subsequent shipwreck on an island. Thinking that the tale was based on a true story Reed enquired at the Church Missionary Societies in New Zealand and London as to who 'Henry' was . . . but had no success. A local Dunedin historian surmises that John White 1826-1891 author of The Ancient History of the Maori 1887-1890 and a great admirer of Dickens may have written the story. --University of Otago summary abridged. A clean bright set without the usual scattered foxing with the exception of volume I p. 72-73 has a bit of off-setting to upper margins from something laid in at one time. Very nice. A Bibliography".v Approximately 100 entries. A Eckel provides a great deal of bibliographic detail for identification of true first editions. According to Dickens scholar Duane DeVries: "Eckel's work still stands despite criticism of its writing style and its errors as the standard modern bibliography of Dickens's writings though one directed more toward collectors than scholars.One can easily see why the volume is both praised and criticized. On the one hand it provides far more information about the works it considers than any previous bibliography had and it covers the entire range of Dickens's works from the major novels to the smallest contribution to Household Words with information on advertisements in the monthly parts of all the serialized novels and a collation of the advertisements and information on the inside and outside of the back wrappers. On the other hand the information provided a not always full not always accurate and not always consistent from one work to the next." A very nice copy of this diminutive book with only the slightest incidental rubbing to cloth. No previous ownership marks writing or marking. Hinges sound and cloth clean. Small 8vo 7 11/16" x 5 3/4" / 13 x 10 cm; wrappers with engraving by Cruikshank on cover red binder's tape as spine; 11 copper-engraved plates by George Cruikshank frontispiece plate is of the music manuscript; "History of the Loving Ballad of Lord Bateman from the Life of George Cruikshank by Blanchard Jerrold 1882; viii9-40 or 48 numbered pages. Supposedly soon after hearing and being delighted by this popular and anonymous ditty the great caricaturist George Cruikshank "performed" it for his close friend Charles Dickens. The latter was equally bemused by the ballad and encouraged his associate to illustrate it and thus it was published with charming copper-plate illustrations. Rare First Scottish edition with correction of "wine" to "vine" in the fifth stanza. Ad for T.H-Smith's Essence of Coffee with Chicory on back wrapper. Pages viii9-40 paged on outer corners throughout; yellow-green vertically fine-ribbed cloth over flexible boards cut flush blocked and lettered gilt lettered yellow-green-through-gilt on front board; end-papers coated pale yellow. Insignificant faded patch to covers not affecting design; front free end-paper lacking; otherwise a nice copy. Includes a six-line P.S. by Cruikshank followed by his wood-engraved signature declaring that he did not in fact write the introductory 'Warning to the Public' which appears over his printed signature above. The original verse - or at least the idea of it - is almost certainly by Thackeray a scrap-book being known containing a piece called "The Famous History of Lord Bateman" partly in his hand and with illustrations by him whilst the 'Warning' and the ten pages of notes are on the authority of J.F. Dexter quoting statements made to him on three separate occasions by Cruikshank the work of Dickens. This is corroborated by the text of a letter from Dickens to Cruikshank. It is likely that Thackeray wrote the text while Dickens prepared the notes and Preface. Compare Yale/Gimbel B84. The first London edition was published by Charles Tilt in 1839. Internally somewhat age-toned but without foxing. Plates are in VG or better condition. This copy has been secured years ago by red binder's tape for its spine which has caused slight bleed through along the inner margins of the covers. The latter also suffers from water-staining outside the engraving by Cruikshank and chaffing of the extremities especially the lower right corner which has abraided. Notwithstanding the slight external red stain the contents are clear bright and the binding is holding well. David Bryce & Son unknown

Two separate title-pages the first reading-"Library of Entertaining Miscellanies Vol. II rule Home Philosophy. Complete in one Volume. New York: G.P. Putnam and Company 10 Park Place 1853. The second title reads-Home and Social Philosophy: or Chapters on Every-Day Topics from "HouseHold Words" edited by Charles Dickens Putnam engraved vignette of globe First and Second Series Complete in one Volume. New York: G.P. Putnam & Company 10 Park Place 1852. 264pgs. 234pgs. Each of these titles had been issued in wraps by Putnam in 1852 and are included in Podeschi under D14 and D15. This two volume compilation is not listed in the Gimbel Collection. Intricately gilt stamped spine sunned and lightened with age with sunning also affecting 35mm of front board along outside joint. Gilt decoration and lettering still bright however with title and author quite readable. Rear free end-paper creased and second of two rear blanks shows light damp-stain along lower edge. Interior clean and fresh with no soiling or foxing. Light wear to top of back-strip. An exceptionally clean copy of this very scarce early American printing of articles originally published in Dickens weekly periodical including "Three 'Detective' Anecdotes." Near very good copy.
