Description: This is the Charles Dickens Mystery of Edwin Drood first edition in book form published posthumously by Chapman and Hall in 1870. The issue points of spelling and printing in this book conform exactly to those listed by Walter E. Smith in his book Charles Dickens in the Original Cloth Part 1. Although printed with continuous page numbers to 190 and chapters from 1 to 23 the book consists of six individually printed sections from No.1 in April 1870 through to No.6 dated September 1870 bound together with the blue external covers showing the generic illustration to the front and advertisements for Chappells Pianos Messrs Howell James and Co. wedding and birthday presents and Parkins and Gattos gift shop. A collection of 15 wooden masks carved by Justo Duarte Reyes and painted by his wife Felipa Pluma Duarte. They were carved between 1895 and 1920. The masks were from the town of Rancheria de los Cacchuates and used in the Procesion de los Nazarenos. This collection of masks was discovered by Dr. Norman D. Thomas. Each mask has a black and white photo with a detailed description the carvings the mask's ceremonial function and its symbolism. In very good condition with light bumping and creasing to edges and corners and light overall scuffing to covers. Binding tight. Pages clean and unmarked. NOT Ex-Library. Philadelphia: Lea and Blanchard 1845. Original Cloth. Original fine rib-grain white cloth stamped in gilt and in blind; pale yellow endpapers; binder's septuple flyleaves at front and back. Cloth is darkened and age soiled with rear board showing several darker spots and backstrip chipped at top and bottom. Interior foxed and text pages browned. Twelve full page illustrations on whiter stock than text and very clean with virtually no foxing to images. Though the illustrations are essentially the same as the those which adorned the English edition several have been modified to include additional material. The artists are D. Maclish 2 R. Doyle 4 J. Leech 5 and C. Stanfielf 1. A very scarce imprint usually found in blue cloth of the first American edition of Dickens's second Christmas book. Quite soiled with moderate wear to cloth else a good soild copy. First Edition. Cloth. Good. 16mo - over 5¾" - 6¾" tall. Lea and Blanchard Hardcover
