‎decorated with four hand coloured transfer scenes from 'The Pickwick Papers' after Robert Seymour R. W. Buss and Hablot Knight Browne titled "Mr Pickwick Addresses the Club" "First Appearance of Mr Sam Weller" "Mrs Bardell faints in Mr Pickwick's arms" and "Mrs Leo Hunter's Fancy dress dejeune" these are repeated on the reverse cartouche on the base "Pickwick" and "J. & R. G." 8" x 8" no date but circa some small cracks firing crack to base chip to the exterior rim Pickwick papers Dickens' first novel was published in original parts from March 1836 to October 1837. The serialisation took off with the introduction of Sam Weller in Chapter 10 and about the same time the Potteries took up producing their themed wares for what was becoming a flourishing market. Godwin the potters thrived between the years 1834 and 1866 in Cobridge near Stoke on Trent. unknown‎

Bound in brown quarter leather with cloth board sides by Real - Lachenmaeier Germany. Printed on Chancery Wove paper. Gilt embossed lettering to the black title block on the spine. Upper edges gilt. Cloth page divider attached at the head of the spine. There is a very slight circular raised dimple to the spine being a printer error. Fresh and clean. ‎Chapman & Hall Limited. Very Good. A 12 volume set of the Dickens novels bound in attractive full red leather. The set comprises Our Mutual Friend Nicholas Nickelby Old Curiosity Shop and A Tale of Two Cities Sketches by Boz and Christmas Books Little Dorrit Oliver Twist and Hard Times Barnaby Rudge and The Uncommercial Traveller Dombey & Sons Great Expectations and American Notes David Copperfield Matin Chuzzlewit Pickwick Papers. All edges gilt and decoratie gilt and black embosed decoration to the spines and boards. Marbled end papers. All volumes contain frontispiece plates and a few other b/w illustration plates. A little rubbing to the head and tail of the spine of the volume of Barnaby Rudge Oliver Twist Pickwick Papers and Little Dorrit. A few bands on the spines are also a little rubbed as are many of the board corners -though the bindings remain very fresh clean and bright. There is a little splitting to the fornt inner hinge to the volumes David Copperfield Nicholas Nickelby and Little Dorrit and to the rear inner hinge of Little Dorrit - the boards remain firmly attached. The casing is sprung to the volumes Old Curiosity Shop Oliver Twist and Barnaby Rudge. the front board of Dombey & Sons has split from the spine revealing the underlying binding and leaving the boards slightly shaken. neat pencil name and place inscription to the preliminary blank page of Nicholas Nickleby. There is a water stain with tide mark to half of the frontispiece plate and one other illustration plate of Old Curiosity Shop though with no other signs of moisture exposure. A little foxing to the edges of the spine strip of Pickwick Papers and Nicholas Nickelby. The front end paper of Oliver Twist has become detached from the rest of the textblock several short tears and niks to the edges of the front end paper. One binding is sitting a little proud. All volumes have a little scattered foxing mainly to the fore edges and page margins with more marked foxing to the volume Dombey & Sons particulalry to the first few and last few pages including frontispiece plate and title page. A few page corner tips are slightly turned. The volumes remain clean and tight. A good set in a very attractive binding. Chapman & Hall Limited hardcover‎

The leather embossed with several bands to the spines with seven gilt embossed bands and gilt titling in a maroon title block. The boards are marbled. New endpapers. These two volumes are from the London edition of the works of Charles Dickens - volume xix and volume xx. Half title pages present in each volume. Each volume with a coloured frontispiece. Four additional coloured plates to volume one and ten plates in black and white as called for. Two additional coloured plates and six other plates to volume two. Some scattered light foxing. ‎Macmillan & Co. Limited. Very Good. Dickens - the works - 20 volumes published by Macmillan in the late 1920's and 1930's in an attractive uniform olive cloth with gilt embossed titles to the spine. Twelve of the volumes have a Hornsey County School prize bookplate to the front end paper and their school circular emblem embossed to the front board in gilt. The other 8 do not but are entirely uniform with this edition - all have the same gilt embossed tooling to the spines. Many of the volumes are reprints of the Chapman and Hall first editions. The books remain clean and tight with the occasional bump to the odd corner and to head and tail of spines and some slight occasional rubbing to the boards. A few of the volumes are slightly faded to the spine - none significantly so. The volumes are. Little Dorrit 1929. Bleak House 1928 with gift inscription to the front end paper. Some page corners a little turned. Sketches by Boz 1926. The Pickwick Papers 1931 - neat gift ink inscription to the front end paper. Our Mutual friend 1926. The Old Curiosity Shop and Master Humphrey's Clock 1927. American notes and pictures from Italy 1925. The Adventures of Oliver Twist 1930 - slight insect damage - thinning to corner of front end paper.
