The International Classics Series B&W film stills A decidedly uncommon Photoplay Edition tied in to M-G-M's 1935 adaptation of the Dickens classic -- an equally "classic" treatment with a stellar cast that included Freddie Bartholomew as David Maureen O'Sullivan Lionel Barrymore Basil Rathbone Elsa Lanchester Edna May Oliver Lewis Stone and most memorably W.C. Fields as Mr. Micawber -- a role he had always coveted but which required both a loan-out by Paramount where he was under contract and the failure of Charles Laughton who was originally cast to inhabit the character to the satisfaction of producer David O. Selznick and director George Cukor. It would be the only time Fields ever appeared in an M-G-M film and he provides some of the most watchable scenes in what otherwise comes across today as a self-consciously "prestigious" and rather awkwardly episodic film. This particular edition of the book is unusual in a number of respects beginning with its heft. Unlike "photoplay editions" of the silent and early talkie era -- which were virtually extinct in their original format by the mid-1930s -- this is not a small and cheaply-produced volume on Grosset & Dunlap and A.L. Burt model: it's a good stout volume -- about the size and weight in fact of "Gone With the Wind" to which Selznick would soon turn his producerly ambitions. Secondly and again unlike the run-of-the-mill PE's of earlier days it's generous in its allocation of bound-in still photos from the movie -- there are 16 in all twice as many as the usual G&D maximum -- and they are beautifully reproduced in a nice sepia tone rather than contrasty black-and-white. All in all the book fairly shouts "Quality Production" and one can't help but think that Selznick himself must have had a hand in setting the production values. And it's interesting to note that four years later not even "Gone With the Wind" itself was accorded such a handsome movie tie-in edition. This edition is remarkably scarce and was even missed by Arnie Davis in his generally comprehensive and authoritative Photoplay Editions bibliography although he does note a 1941 Dodd Mead printing with the photo illustrations but without a movie-themed jacket. It's also worth noting that this was issued as part of the series dubbed "The International Classics" which is blurbed thus on the rear jacket panel: "Each book has 16 full-page color plates and is bound in blue cloth with stained tops" -- whereas this volume is bound in red cloth and has no topstain and the color plates as noted are actually sepia-toned film stills. Yet more ways in which this book seems to have been an anomaly.
