Very good in 3/4 leather calf and marbled paper covered boards with five raised bands on the spine with gilt stamped red and black leather labels in two compartments and gilt tool work in the others. An octavo measuring 8 1/4 by 5 1/4 inches with marbled end sheets. The upper 1/2" of the front joint is parted and the balance of that joint is rubbed as is the rear joint and the edges of the leather at the fore corners of the boards. The leather at the head and tail of the spine is rubbed and worn. The front and rear hinges remain tight and strong. 624 pages of text. Illustrated with 40 engraved plates by H. K. Browne "Phiz". There is no date on the printed title page. A prior owner has written in pencil the date "1846". This printing shows the transposed pound sign on the sign-post on the vignette title page; and with the fourteen-line errata page seen in the second issue of the first edition.
