Previous owner's ink inscription on front-free endpapers of Vol. II. and III. Occasional slight offsetting and periodic edge-browning or foxing to plates. Overall a very good copy. ìJohn Macrone was the publisher of Dickensà first book and when he died he left a widow and several children in comparatively destitute circumstances. As a business man he drove what to the young author at that time was a rather hard bargain over a copyright. But the appeal made on behalf of a needy family Dickens could not resist. He was in the middle of ëMaster HumphreyÃs Clockà and regardless of this he undertook the management of ëThe Picnic Papersà the proceeds of which were to alleviate hardships. He wrote the Introduction rewrote his unacted farce ëThe Lamplighterà altering the name to ëThe LamplighterÃs Storyà edited the balance of the book excepting the third volume and was enabled to place in the hands of the widow the sum of £300î Eckel. "The Life and Adventures of Martin Chuzzlewit commonly known as Martin Chuzzlewit is a novel by Charles Dickens considered the last of his picaresque novels. It was originally serialised between 1842 and 1844. While he was writing it Dickens told a friend that he thought it was his best work1 but it was one of his least popular novels.2 The late nineteenth century English novelist George Gissing read the novel in February 1888 "for refreshment" but felt that it showed "incomprehensible weakness of story".3 Like nearly all of Dickens's novels Martin Chuzzlewit was first published in monthly instalments. Early sales of the monthly parts were disappointing compared to previous works so Dickens changed the plot to send the title character to the United States.4 This allowed the author to portray the United States which he had visited in 1842 satirically as a near-wilderness with pockets of civilisation filled with deceitful and self-promoting hucksters. The main theme of the novel according to Dickens's preface is selfishness portrayed in a satirical fashion using all the members of the Chuzzlewit family. The novel is also notable for two of Dickens's great villains Seth Pecksniff and Jonas Chuzzlewit. It is dedicated to Angela Georgina Burdett-Coutts a friend of Dickens's. Playbill measures 19 x 8 3/4 inches and possibly larger under the mount. Frame measures 25 1/2 x 15 1/4 inches. Printed in black and red. With some minor creasing and a small pencil notation. Some very light offsetting and toning. Beautifully framed. Overall about fine. This playbill tells us that the Manchester staging of Not So Bad As We Seem is the twelfth performance of the charity production. Dickens Douglas Jerrold Wilkie Collins John Tenniel Mark Lemon and others appear in the cast with Dickens taking director and producer credit as well. "Free Trade Hall Manchester. On Wednesday Evening February 11th 1852 The Amateur Company Guild of Literature & Art; To encourage Life Assurance and other Provident habits among Authors and Artists; to render such assistance to both as shall never compromise their independence.
