Dickens Charles
Letters on Public Executions in six complete issues of THE TIMES of London
1849. In: THE TIMES of London November 14-21 1849. Six complete issues of this newspaper with supplements. On November 13 1849 Charles Dickens with his friend the illustrator John Leech witnessed in Horsemonger's Lane the public hanging of George Manning and his wife Maria for the murder of her former lover. Dickens was disgusted not by the executions themselves but by the fact that they were public -- it is estimated that the hangings were witnessed by about 30000. Later that very day Dickens wrote a letter to the editor of The Times and it appeared the next day. Wednesday November 14th. Dickens's first letter to The Times in which he expresses his shock at the behavior of the crowd at the hangings going on to ask that public executions be abolished. . When I came upon the scene at midnight the shrillness of the cries and howls. made my blood run cold. As the night went on screeching and laughing and yelling in strong chorus of parodies on Negro melodies with substitutions of "Mrs. Manning" for "Susannah" and the like were added to these. When the day dawned thieves low prostitutes ruffians and vagabonds of every kind flocked onto the ground with every variety of offensive and foul behavior. When the two miserable creatures who attracted all this ghastly sight about them were turned quivering into the air there was no more emotion no more pity no more thought that two immortal souls had gone to judgment. than if the name of Christ had never been heard in this world. This issue further includes an editorial by The Times itself reporting and commenting on the "act of judicial slaughter" committed on the previous day but disagreeing with Dickens's request that executions be carried out in private. Also included in this issue is a long account of the executions including an account of the murder that began all of this. Friday November 16th. There was nothing relevant in Thursday's paper. This issue contains a letter from a reader using the pen-name "T" commenting on the situation and agreeing with Dickens's points. It also contains the coroner's report on one Catherine Read who was trampled to death by the crowd at the Mannings' executions. Saturday November 17th. This issue contains a letter from reader "S.G.O." agreeing with Dickens and further reporting that some spectators at the hanging were using opera glasses the better to view the proceedings. It also contains a letter from reader "Milo" agreeing that Dickens had made some good points in his letter but saying that the solutions Dickens offered are impractical Dickens will refer to this letter in his own next letter to The Times. Monday November 19th. There was no Sunday Times. This issue contains Dickens's second and last letter to The Times on this subject and is much more extensive than his first. He expresses his views on executions in general which he does not oppose and public executions in great detail. Tuesday November 20th. This issue contains a letter from "P.G. Head" who completely opposes Dickens's views as expressed the day before. It also includes a second Times editorial on the subject very extensive which discusses the strong impact of Dickens's letters on the public's reaction to capital punishment. Wednesday November 21st. Finally in this issue is a third editorial by The Times which criticizes Dickens's views as expressed in his letter of the 19th. It also reports on the proceedings of an "Anti-Capital Punishment" meeting of two days earlier. Finally there is also a letter from reader "John Gilpin" regarding that meeting. In 1824 Dickens's father had been sent to Marshalsea Prison for owing forty pounds ten shillings -- compelling twelve-year-old Dickens to leave school and get a job in a factory; more than three decades later the father of "Little Dorrit" was likewise a Marshalsea debtor interestingly Marshalsea was demolished in the same year as these Times issues. Beginning with his earliest writings Dickens showed concern for criminals and the treatment they received in courts: Mr. Bumble's "The law is an ass!" pretty well sums up Dickens's opinion of the English legal system. Bleak House revolves around the unending legal case of Jarndyce vs Jarndyce A Tale of Two Cities involves public executions albeit in a different time and country and in Great Expectations an escaped prisoner plays a major role. When Dickens was editor of the Daily News in 1846 he wrote a number of pieces on capital punishment -- views revived by the Mannings' execution circus in 1849. However it was not until 1868 that a law was passed abolishing public executions; they finally ceased in 1869 the year before Dickens died. These are the complete newspaper issues; it is very difficult to amass the entire group of six. They are in near-fine condition with only minor fraying at some edges two or three of the issues may have once been bound into a volume; one has a "Dublin Castle" ink-stamp at the top. The text of Dickens's two letters may be found in the Pilgrim Edition of his Letters Vol V pages 644-645 and pages 651-654; not noted by Podeschi Yale nor by vanderPoel Texas.

unknown

A MESSAGE FROM THE SEA
1860. An Extra Double Number of of All The Year Round. New York: J. M. Emerson & Co. 1860. Original self-wrappers bound in at the rear of the February 1861 monthly issue which has its own pale-yellow printed wrappers. First American Edition "published simultaneously in London and New York " according to the front wrapper -- of the second of the nine extra Christmas numbers of All The Year Round. Dickens actually wrote only the first second and fifth chapters of A MESSAGE FROM THE SEA the remainder having been written by his son-in-law's brother Wilkie Collins. This was the second of the nine extra Christmas number of All The Year Round of which Dickens was the editor. This is the only one of the nine annual numbers to be illustrated -- having on page 5 a woodcut of the actual "message from the sea." This example has the 48-page Extra Christmas Number bound in at the rear of the February 1861 monthly issue which includes the weekly issues of January. Included in those weekly issues are the first two serial parts of GREAT EXPECTATIONS the first of which leads off with the well-known "My father's family name being Pirrip.". Quite scarce -- much scarcer than the London edition. Very good condition wear at the corners. Not in Podeschi Yale -- see E13; see Eckel pp 195.

unknown

THE MUDFOG PAPERS etc.
1880. Now First Collected. New York: Henry Holt and Company 1880. 6 pp undated ads plus endpaper ads. Original cream cloth decorated in black. First American Edition issued as No. 114 in Holt's "Leisure Hour Series." THE MUDFOG PAPERS had originally appeared in America in the 1830s in the American Bentley's Miscellany and one of them "The Public Life of Mr. Tulrumble" was included in an 1837 Lea & Blanchard collection of sketches; the other papers' first appearance in book form was as an appendix to Mackenzie's LIFE OF DICKENS Philadelphia 1870. It was not until 1880 however that THE MUDFOG PAPERS were published as a separate book by Bentley in England and by Holt in America. This is a very good-plus copy a little soiled as always with these cream-colored "Leisure Hour" volumes. Podeschi Yale D87.

hardcover

DICKENS' NEW STORIES first U.S. edition of "The Seven Poor Travellers"
1855. Containing: The Seven Poor Travellers. Nine New Stories by the Christmas Fire. Hard Times. With a Portrait of the Author engraved on steel. Philadelphia: T. B. Peterson n.d. 1855. Original dark brown cloth blind-stamped with spine vignette in gilt. First Edition so collected first issue in the dark brown binding with spine vignette in gilt "T.B. Peterson" at the foot of the spine and 102 Chestnut Street as the title page address. Although the volume consists of six works "by Dickens" the last three are not "Lizzie Leigh" "The Miner's Daughters" and "Fortune Wildred". The first two pieces in the volume which really do involve Dickens are "The Seven Poor Travellers" and "Nine New Stories by the Christmas Fire": these were the "Extra Christmas Numbers" of Dickens's periodical Household Words for 1854 and 1853 respectively. "Nine New Stories" is the American title for "Another Round of Stories": of the stories Dickens himself wrote "The Schoolboy's Story" and "Nobody's Story." For "The Seven Poor Travellers" this constitutes the first American edition published soon after it came out in London for Christmas 1854; Dickens himself wrote "the First Poor Traveller" and "The Road." Finally Dickens's novel HARD TIMES is also included in this volume in its entirety; it had been serialized in Household Words during 1854 and this is a very early but not first American edition of it. This copy is in near-fine condition very light wear at the spine ends. See Podeschi D25.

hardcover

LITTLE DORRIT
1857. Illustrated Edition. Two Volumes Complete in One. Philadelphia: T. B. Peterson n.d. 1857. Original half calf with marbled boards endpapers and page edges. First American illustrated octavo edition. The first Peterson volume of LITTLE DORRIT in fact the first in book form anywhere was Vol I of the two-volume duodecimo edition published in November 1856 during serialization; in June 1857 once serialization was complete Peterson quickly published the novel in numerous duodecimo including Vol II of the above and octavo formats. One octavo double-column format consists of 317 pages of text -- issued first without illustrations in wrappers or in cloth and soon thereafter with plates inserted. Another octavo format this one has 376 pages of text with the illustrations integrated into the text some sideways. This copy is in contemporary half calf with marbled boards page edges and endpapers. Peterson advertised that his octavo editions of Dickens were available to buyers in four different bindings of half calf in addition to cloth and we have seen numerous volumes in this exact binding -- leading us to believe that this is a publisher's original binding. Stab-holes are evident in the gutter of all leaves -- possibly indicating that it was originally bound up by Peterson in wrappers then put into his standard half calf. Condition is very good with minor rubbing at the extremities. See Podeschi D25.

hardcover

THE OLD CURIOSITY SHOP and Other Tales
1841. With Numerous Illustrations by Cattermole and Browne. Philadelphia: Lea and Blanchard 1841. Original dark brown fine-diaper grain cloth with spine lettering and vignette in gilt. First complete American Edition in book form. In 1840-1841 Lea & Blanchard issued THE OLD CURIOSITY SHOP as the first novel within "Master Humphrey's Clock" as in the U. K. in monthly parts; during serialization an edition containing the first twelve of the 21 parts was issued with the title page dated 1840 and stating that there are 59 illustrations. At the conclusion of serialization complete-novel copies dated 1841 were issued with variant preliminary leaves. Smith notes three variations of this edition without citing any precedence among the three: "Cloth Issues A and B" which have a gilt border around the spine vignette and which differ only in their preliminary leaves and a "further variation" with no such border and with preliminaries that are a combination of his "A" and "B" -- no Dickens portrait a feature of "A" and no dedication on the MHC title verso a feature of "B". There would be later copies dated 1841 or 1842 with a different frontispiece illustration and with the additional mention of the illustrator Sibson. This copy is "Cloth Issue A" with no Dickens portrait and with the dedication printed on the MHC title verso -- in original dark brown fine-diaper-grain cloth with gilt border around the spine vignette. It is in very good-plus condition very slight wear at the spine ends a few leaves standing slightly proud.
