‎1853. the scarce first US edition In Two Volumes. New York: Harper & Brothers 1853/1854. Original blind-stamped red cloth with gilt-decorated spines. First American Edition first printing properly dated 1853 and 1854 and with a different publisher's address in each volume. As with the three volumes of the English edition which were issued separately in December of 1851 1852 and 1853 the two volumes of Harper's edition were obviously issued separately -- on 18 March 1853 and on 25 March 1854 according to bibliographer Walter Smith from the Harper Archives. When Harper published the second volume they also released a new printing of the first with its date changed to 1854 and with their address changed to 82 Beekman Street. A two-volume edition was also published by Jenks Hickling & Swan of Boston but with both volumes dated 1854. This is a very good copy the only significant defect being some chipping at the ends of the spines. In our experience this edition especially the 1853-dated first volume is scarce in original cloth -- much scarcer than the three-volume English edition; in fact this is the only such 1853/1854 copy we have had twice in our forty years in business. Smith pp 110-113 with photographs of this copy; Podeschi Yale A129; not in Carr. Provenance: both volumes bear the penciled signature of bibliographer Walter Smith; also included is Sumner & Stillman's original 2012 description-slip for this copy part of the Dan Calinescu Collection purchased by Walter Smith -- with his penciled instructions to the printer regarding photography of this copy in his bibliography. <br/><br/> hardcover‎

First Complete American Edition issued as No. LXIII in Wiley & Putnam's "Library of Choice Reading" -- available either in wrappers on its own or bound in red cloth together with Mrs. Jameson's MEMOIRS AND ESSAYS as here. During 1846 seven letters from Dickens in Italy were published in The Daily News in London and in America Wiley & Putnam jumped on them and published them in two wrappered parts titled TRAVELLING LETTERS WRITTEN ON THE ROAD -- the only such book edition on either side of the Atlantic and extremely scarce today. Later that year Dickens polished up the letters and added considerably to their number creating the U.K. volume PICTURES FROM ITALY published on May 18th; Wiley & Putnam quickly issued this corresponding American edition on June 8th followed "a day or two" Smith later by William Colyer's edition. Condition of this copy is very good: the original endpapers are intact but there is some wear along the outer joints though the book is tight. Smith pp 77-80 including photographs of this copy; Podeschi Yale A100 listing only a copy in wrappers; Carr Texas B495 likewise; Wilkins p. 28. ‎1854. in Two Volumes. Boston: Jenks Hickling & Swan 1854. Original blind-stamped dark brown cloth with gilt-decorated spines. Early American edition just possibly the first complete one. Since Harper published the two volumes of its edition separately in March 1853 and in March 1854 so dated on the title pages it is considered to be the first American edition. The date in 1854 when these two Boston volumes were published is unknown so it is possible that this two-volume Boston edition came out earlier in 1854 than Harper's second volume. Jenks Hickling & Swan was a very "fluid" enterprise at the time such that their 1856 and 1857 two-volumes-in-one printings would be by Hickling Swan & Brown and their 1861 two-in-one printing would be by Swan Brewer & Tileston. This set is in very good-plus condition a few small holes in the cloth mainly at extremities or at joints; the gilt on the spines is unusually bright. Smith pp 116-119; Carr UTexas B500 in blue cloth; not cited by Podeschi. Provenance: both front free endpapers bear not only a contemporary signature but also the penciled signature of Dickens bibliographer Walter Smith; in fact this very copy is the one pictured on pages 117 and 118 of his book. <br/><br/> hardcover‎

‎A TALE OF TWO CITIES and GREAT EXPECTATIONS in "All The Year Round"‎

‎1859. A Weekly Journal. With which is incorporated Household Words. In Eleven Volumes. London: Office of "All The Year Round" 1859-1864. Original blind-stamped olive green or olive brown cloth. First Appearance in Print of these two major novels. This is a set of the first eleven volumes comprised of the weekly numbers from April 1859 to August 1864 of this periodical founded and edited by Charles Dickens. There would be a total of twenty volumes ending in late 1868 twenty months before Dickens's death. All The Year Round was issued each week without separate wrappers or ads; at the end of each 26-week period the complete issues were available for purchase bound in this cloth priced at 5s.6d. Dickens had earlier been the editor and majority owner of the periodical Household Words since 1850. In 1859 he became embroiled in a bitter dispute with Bradbury & Evans its printer and minority owner regarding Dickens's own infidelity with his wife. Unable to have his way he threatened to withdraw from it and start a rival periodical; when B&E failed to capitulate he did so -� creating All The Year Round. In order to start off with a bang Dickens began the very first issue with the serialization of his own new novel A TALE OF TWO CITIES its first appearance: this novel was also issued in monthly parts but running about a month behind ALL THE YEAR ROUND. This was immediately followed by the first appearance of the great mystery THE WOMAN IN WHITE by Wilkie Collins his son-in-law's brother; this in turn was soon followed by the first appearance of Dickens's own GREAT EXPECTATIONS which was not otherwise published serially. Three of the great novels of the 19th Century one after another in the same weekly journal! Other serialized novels within these volumes include NO NAME by Wilkie Collins A DARK NIGHT'S WORK by Elizabeth Gaskell A DAY'S RIDE by Charles Lever A STRANGE STORY by Bulwer-Lytton and VERY HARD CASH by Charles Reade. In addition to A TALE OF TWO CITIES and GREAT EXPECTATIONS these volumes include numerous other Dickens contributions. One group appearing in ATYR during 1860 is all 16 of the semi-autobiographical essays which a year later would be published converted into 17 as THE UNCOMMERCIAL TRAVELLER; a further 11 appeared in ATYR during 1863. There are also nine shorter pieces see Eckel for a list including "The Poor Man and His Beer" and "The Tattlesnivel Bleater." Finally each December there was an "Extra Christmas Number" of ATYR co-written by Dickens which sometimes but not always would be included in these semi-annual volumes: in this set Vol 2 includes "The Haunted House" Vol 6 has "Tom Tiddler's Ground" Vol 8 has "Somebody's Luggage" and Vol 10 has "Mrs. Lirriper's Lodgings" Vol 4 lacks "A Message from the Sea". The volumes are generally in very good condition. Some of the endpapers are cracked and have been reglued it was not until later in the series that the publisher began using stronger endpapers. There is also wear at some of the spine ends. That said all eleven volumes are still in the original cloth -- which was too fragile a binding for such hefty volumes with the result that most sets seen today were at some point rebound in half-calf. In all this is a desirable set of a vital literary periodical. To buy the first editions A TALE OF TWO CITIES and GREAT EXPECTATIONS in original cloth would require an investment of $60000-$100000; here are their earlier appearances in original cloth at a small fraction of the cost. ‎1845. A Goblin Story of Some Bells that Rang an Old Year out and a New Year in. With Illustrations. Philadelphia: Lea and Blanchard 1845. Original blue-grey cloth decorated in gilt. First hardbound and fully-illustrated American edition -- preceded by only three days by E. Winchester's edition and by Harper's edition both of which were issued in wrappers and with one or no illustrations. "The L&B edition is almost an exact copy of the original English edition" with the same front cover decoration and with the same plates by John Leech Richard Doyle and others. The illustrations which in the English edition share pages with text were for this edition "extended" to occupy entire pages: "the work of the illustrations is very well done but it is doubtful if the changes have improved them any" quotes from Wilkins. This copy is bound in blue cloth; others are in yellowish-white or pink no priority. Curiously the binder's name "J.G. Russell Binder" appears in the lower margin of each cover's design. Condition is very good -- better than that externally as there is only minor soil and edge-wear. Unfortunately for the text pages a very cheap paper was employed such that today those leaves are heavily browned. This does not apply to the plates however which are quite white and bright. Third American Edition just one day after the first! of this book that resulted from Dickens's 1842 tour of America. As first put forth in a 1975 article by Peter Bracher and soon to be confirmed in Walter Smith's upcoming bibliography this edition was published on November 8th 1842 the day after Winchester's "New World" edition and Wilson's "Brother Jonathan" edition -- but the day before Lea & Blanchard's fourth American edition. Dickens was so upset by the lack of an international copyright law he forewent any negotiations with American publishers -- which is why none of these publishers had advance sheets and all simply had to wait in the harbor for the first boat to arrive with copies of the UK edition published October 19th and then rush to press. This Harper edition bears the date November 2nd on the ads and on the inside rear wrapper but as the above bibliographers have researched such a date is not necessarily the publication date when the book is actually available to the public. A curiosity of this edition is that although prices on the rear and inside covers are in cents the front cover twice states "price one shilling." Very early American edition second by five days. While the UK edition was being published in 20-in-19 monthly serial parts Harper published the novel in seven serial parts six consisting of three UK parts each followed by the seventh consisting of Part 19/20 -- issued irregularly between March 1843 and July 1844. Harper's final part was issued on July 22nd and three days later the 25th they came out with the same leaves bound in cloth as here priced at $1.00 -- containing the same 14 plates in seven facing pairs as had appeared serially. But J. Winchester of New York after running the novel serially in his monthly "The New World" magazine came out with his edition bound in wrappers and with no illustrations on July 20th -- priced at just 25 cents which Winchester proudly proclaimed to be "the cheapest novel ever issued from the press." MARTIN CHUZZLEWIT in Harper's seven actual wrappered parts is now exceedingly rare -- according to a Harper employee "the sale of the work in numbers was chiefly by newsboys on the street." Harper's book edition did not sell well -- partly because its price was four times Winchester's price but also because the American public did not care for Dickens's criticisms of America in his recent AMERICAN NOTES and in the early chapters of MARTIN CHUZZLEWIT. This copy is in the secondary binding state used for leaves not yet bound up at year-end by which time copies were being sold for 75 or 50 cents: it is identical to the first except that the date at the foot of the spine reads 1845 rather than 1844. Condition is very good minor wear at the binding extremities short tear at the top of the rear joint light cover soil.
