Typescript of a lecture 118 pp. On one side only. Quarto. With about twenty hand changes in text. The lecture was published in a supplement to the Christmas number of the Windsor Magazine for 1934 under the title "An Important Literary Discovery" and with a forward by Mary Angela Dickens Charles Dickens's grand-daughter. This typescript was done at "Miss Dickens" typewriting office and according to a pencil note "She was one of the pioneers of Typewriting in London. She charged 1/2d a folio." Half brown morocco over brown pebbled cloth gilt-stamped on spine with five raised bands. Many period corrections throughout. Edges rubbed small spot to front cover. Very good. First obtainable printing. Sixteenmo. 80pp. Original brown cloth decoratively blocked in black and blind lettered in gilt and black. Off-white endpapers printed in red. A fine bright copy. Housed in a custom maroon cloth slipcase black morocco label on spine gilt-stamped. Apparently no copy exists of the first 1837 edition of this play Dickensà third published play first performed 6 March 1837; this is the only published work by Dickens to which this situation applies. The Gimbel collection has playbills for performances on 13 March and 6 April 1837. Eckel mentions that the only known copy of this edition was at Osgood for their 1877 reprint and was subsequently destroyed in a fire there in 1879. A census in Eckel finds only three extant copies of the 1873 British reprint. Thus the Osgood reprint of 1877 is the first obtainable printing of this piece. The Gimbel collection does have a copy of the 1873 English probably the one mentioned by Eckel as lacking the back wrapper; the extensive McQuire collection of American Dickens did not have a copy; Vander Poel had both green and brick cloth variants of the 1877 as did Gimbel. Includes marginal note on page 9 that was suppressed in later issues. Modern full brown morocco by Bayntum-Riviere gilt-stamped with a portrait of Dickens on front cover. Spine stamped in gilt with five raised bands. All edges gilt gilt-turn-ins. Housed in a brown cloth open end slipcase. A fine copy with clean plates. "From a literary standpoint the supremacy of this book has been. firmly established. It was written by Dickens when he was twenty-four and its publication placed the author on a solid foundation from which he never was removed. It is quite probable that only ShakespeareÃs Works the Bible and perhaps the English Prayer Book exceed "Pickwick Papers" in circulation" Eckel 17. Engraved frontispiece title and 38 plates including the first example of a 'dark plate' and the first use of horizontal plates by Hablot K. Browne with tissue guards preserved. Bound from the parts with stab-holes visible at gutter in contemporary cloth: bluish-green cloth the covers with wide gilt panel smooth spine gilt-decorated and -titled pale yellow endpapers all edges gilt. FIRST EDITION IN BOOK FORM IN AN APPARENTLY BESPOKE CONTEMPORARY CLOTH BINDING. The present binding is not mentioned by Smith: the two variants he describes are both decorated in blind not with the richly-gilt panels found on the present copy. A handsome VG copy. 15 1 blank pp. Binder's blanks at rear of volume. 8vo. 8-1/2" x 5-1/2" <br/><br/>The notorious quarrel between two of England's most popular authors began with Yates' critical review in Town Talk of Thackeray's English Humourists of the Eighteenth Century. Thackeray as might be expected was a bit affronted at what he viewed as a slanderous insult by this fellow member of the Garrick Club; believing much of Yates' information came from club meetings he took his grievance to the club committee. The committee sided with Thackeray and instructed Yates to apologize; Yates refused & was forcibly barred from club premises subsequently bringing charges against the club Secretary. Dickens absent from London as this brouhaha was brewing returned to find all in full force. He offered to mediate though primarily siding with Yates which Thackeray viewed as treachery. The ill feelings between the two did not abate for years until shortly before Thackeray's death in 1863. Herein Yates recounts the history & evidence of the disagreement with not unexpectedly a bias to his own case. This copy presented to Edward Bradley presumed to be the Victorian novelist who wrote under the pen name Cuthbert M. Bede. Known in Wise facsimiles cf Todd 425c the first edition as here just twice at auction in the last 30 years the last being 1977. S. Duval and four black-and-white original brown cloth decorated and lettered in blind and gilt on the front cover and spine and in blind only on rear cover by J. C. Russell Binder. First American edition of Dickens' most popular work. replicating the first English edition the American edition was printed by "C. Sherman printer" as noted on the verso of the title-page. Carey & Hart's American publication was a piracy published in blatant disregard to Dickens' impassioned plea for international copyright protection during his tour of America in 1843. The present copy is in the rare gift binding stamped on the front cover with the binder's name unlike in the ordinary bindings. Edgar & Vail p. 21; Gimbel a80; McGuire Collection 31; Wilkins p. 38; Suzzanet Collection p. 190 item 78 the ordinary binding only. a short 1/8 inch closed tear at the top of the spine slight foxing to endpapers otherwise a remarkably fine copy of this edition far scarcer than the English edition.
