Fine etched frontispiece with original hand color 10 etchings one hand-colored very slightly thumbed some toning. Original publisher's limp green diced cloth gilt decorated with Cruikshank's design a bit edgeworn. Provenance: With enveloped SIGNED by George Cruikshank laid in. With bookseller's ticket tipped in on front free endpaper. From the estate of Robert Rieber. Doyle sale April 13 2016 Lot 254. First edition first issue with "wine" for "vine" in the fifth stanza centered page numbers and trees in the seventh plate and hills in the ninth plate unshaded. The text has been long attributed to Thackeray; however Benoit Forgeot suggests that it was Dickens alone who wrote this verse adaptation of the Ballad as well as the tongue-in-cheek introduction and notes. On "hearing Cruikshank mournfully intone the words of the Turk's daughter to the imprisoned Lord�Dickens offered to polish it into an even more solemn absurdity. He told Cruikshank to ask his sister Fanny to take down the music and 'to be sure to mark the shades and the expression.' And although he kept his part in The Loving Ballad secret he not only wrote a burlesque introduction and notes but altered lines and substituted a new last verse" Johnson p. 260. George Cruikshank was a British caricaturist and book illustrator who was praised as the "modern Hogarth" during his lifetime. Provenance: with the small library label of Wolfgang A. Herz on the front paste-down his sale Important Voyages and Travels 9th December 2009 lot 268. First edition in German of "American Notes for General Circulation" published in 1842 and translated into German by G.A. Moriarth. "American Notes" is based on Dickens's letters to John Forster Maclise Beard Mitton and Fontblanque and his journal. Sailing from Liverpool on 3 January 1842 Dickens visited numerous cities in the United States and Canada including Boston New York Philadelphia Richmond St. Louis Cleveland Niagara Falls Montreal and Quebec before leaving for England from New York City on June 7. Dickens was exhausted by the trip even though he had been greeted with great affection by his readers there and his impressions of America and Americans are not always flattering. The practice of spitting in public was a particular anathema: "The flashes of saliva flew so perpetually and incessantly out of the windows all the way that it looked as though they were ripping open feather-beds and letting the wind dispose of the feathers" quoted in Johnson Charles Dickens 1952 p.396. Copied from the etchings "Mrs. Bardeau Faints in Mr. Pickwick's Arms" a new etching for the second edition of the Pickwick Papers; "My Magnificent Order at the Public House" from The Personal History of David Copperfield; and "The Eyes of Mrs. Chick Are Opened to Lucretia Tox" from Dombey and Son; all originally created by Phiz for Charles Dickens. Each is signed "C.C.G." with the date in 1904. Images a bit tanned light scattered foxing edges chipped the second image has large loss at lower left corner of board and third has loss at upper left corner neither affecting the images all have glue residue along top of boards that does not affect the images some minor soiling to all very good. unknown

1861. Works of Charles Dickens. Household Edition. In Two Volumes. Illustrated from Drawings by F.O.C. Darley and John Gilbert. New York: James G. Gregory 1861. Original dark green cloth. Very early American Edition -- the first to deposit copies at the Library of Congress -- of one of Dickens's most-loved novels being volumes of the "Household Edition". There has been much controversy over which is the first American edition -- this edition by Gregory or Peterson's edition. This Gregory edition was long regarded as the first American edition but Walter Smith's 2012 bibliography of Dickens's American editions gives the nod to Peterson's with considerable information on this controversy. In the meantime here is the brief known history. On November 15 1860 Harper entered a copyright for the book and then serialized the tale in Harper's Weekly beginning on November 24 and ending on August 3 1861 however there is no book edition published by Harper in 1861 as they sold the book rights to Peterson. On August 26 barely three weeks later and about seven weeks after the English three-decker was published James Gregory of New York entered a two volume set for copyright having undoubtedly set the type from the Harper serialization. Peterson of Philadelphia did not enter his one-volume edition at the LofC until November 8th almost three months later. But according to Smith Peterson's edition was actually out in the public's hand by the month of July while Gregory's did not actually hit the streets until September. So although Gregory's was the first edition to deposit copies at the Library of Congress Peterson's was the first "published" -- put into the hands of the public. The earliest Gregory volumes as here bear only his name as publisher on the title pages; on later copies this was replaced by the imprint of Sheldon and Company. Each volume includes a frontispiece plate by F.O.C. Darley with protective tissue the UK edition was not illustrated. These volumes are bright and in close-to-fine condition scarcely any of the usual mottling and bubbling of the cloth frequently a problem with these Household Edition volumes and virtually no wear.
