Dickens Charles
IS SHE HIS WIFE
Dickens Charles. IS SHE HIS WIFE Boston: James R. Osgood 1877. First American edition first state of binding with correct monogram. Original terra cotta cloth gilt. Mild rubbing at spine ends a couple of stray marks but a very good bright copy of this scarce "comic burletta." In 1876 James T. Fields acquired the only known copy of the original 1837 edition and used it to produce this edition; his unique copy was destroyed when his library burned in December 1879. A British reprint itself rarely seen appeared in 1883. This volume was part of Osgood's 102 volume vest-pocket series which included Twain's rare A TRUE STORY and several Hawthorne Emerson and Lowell titles that are also seldom seen. Books in this series were published only in terra cotta or green cloth with no priority between the two colors and the print runs ran from 500 to 1250 copies per title. Kitton MINOR WRITINGS OF CHARLES DICKENS pp. 207-10. Eckel p. 159. Podeschi B62. hardcover books

MRS. GAMP AND THE STROLLING PLAYERS
Dickens Charles. MRS. GAMP AND THE STROLLING PLAYERS. New York: Privately Printed 1899. First separate edition one of 85 copies printed on handmade paper at the Gillis Press. Original vegetable vellum white boards gilt uncut. A hint of dust to white covers else a very fine copy of this slender volume. Dickens began writing this sketch in 1847 to raise additional money in a benefit for Leigh Hunt who was destitute at the time. A prior benefit had fallen short of its goal but before this piece could be finished Hunt received a pension that helped him considerably and the project was dropped. The American collector Lowell M. Palmer bought the original manuscript and had this volume privately printed from the manuscript; the rare book department of Dodd Mead sold copies for $10 each. Brussells ANGLO-AMERICAN FIRST EDITIONS EAST TO WEST p. 86. Podeschi B182. VanderPoel B515. hardcover books

COUNT LUDWIG AND OTHER ROMANCES
Dickens Charles. COUNT LUDWIG AND OTHER ROMANCES. NOW FIRST COLLECTED INTO A SINGLE VOLUME. New York: Published by Henry G. Daggard 1845. First edition. Original terra cotta printed wrappers uncut. Some chipping at spine and faint stains in text but an attractive copy of a very scarce collection of stories including Dickens' `The Lamplighter's Story' and `Public Life of Mr. Tulrumble Once Mayor of Mudfog' and stories by Thomas Moore Douglas Jerrold and W. H. Ainsworth. There was no English edition of this collection. OCLC locates only five copies bindings unknown. This crudely printed pamphlet has more the appearance of a sloppy proof: quads and spacers have worked up between words on several pages including the title-page! and the running title on one page has been crudely cut-cancelled. This copy has the "1" missing from the date on the title-page as noted by McCutcheon. Not in Podeschi Carr or Wilkins nor in the McGuire collection. McCutcheon 79. Edgar & Vail p. 23. unknown books

NOVELS AND TALES
Dickens Charles. THE NOVELS AND TALES. Philadelphia: Lea & Blanchard 1846. 3 vols. First edition. Original deep navy-blue cloth gilt. Some fraying to spine of first volume general mild edge wear discrete library stamps on front end papers and top edges no other markings to text or binding; a bright and attractive set. Included are PICKWICK OLD CURIOSITY SHOP BARNABY RUDGE OLIVER TWIST NICHOLAS NICKLEBY and MARTIN CHUZZLEWITT. We have seen only two other sets: we sold a rebound set more than a decade ago and we have seen a set in shabby condition worn and faded original purple cloth recased with new end papers. Because these volumes were the same size and thickness as the English "octavo novels" very few survive in acceptable condition. This is the first collected edition of Dickens' works published in America and it is entirely unrecorded: Wilkins thought the 1851 Peterson edition was the first collected American edition; Podeschi records only the four-volume reprint of 1851; the McGuire collection included an 1847-8 reprint. This edition even precedes by one year the first `Cheap Edition' of Dickens WORKS published in England and the Chapman & Hall collected edition "Library Edition" of the 1850s. Rare. hardcover books

LITTLE DORRITT
Dickens Charles. LITTLE DORRITT. London: Bradbury & Evans 1857. First edition first issue with uncorrected text at pp. 467-74 signature 2B2 misprinted as "B2" etc. Original green cloth gilt. Variant binding no priority with "LONDON MDCCCLVII" in gilt at foot a variant not noted by Smith but recorded elsewhere. Plates moderately browned not foxed; text tight; covers much rubbed and marked with many creases in spine; spine ends intact. The "octavo novels" have become extremely difficult to find in original cloth in decent condition and nice copies of this work in this binding fetch five to ten times as much for example Sotheby London 11 July 1996 sale 6412 lot 165 $3680 spine sunned. Dicken's second novel to deal with the injustice of imprisonment for debt. The character Flora Finching was based on his early love Maria Beadnell and while the novel was being published Dickens' marital problems became public knowledge. Bradbury & Evans refused Dickens' request to publish a notice regarding his marital problems and this was his last novel published with the firm. Eckel pp. 82-5. Smith I:12. hardcover books
