Accompanied by an autographed check by Dickens tipped in on the third free endpaper and drawn on Coutts Bank payable to "Young Ladies Quarters" for twenty-five pounds London fourth March 1862. A mixed state set with the following points: Part I with no ads on inner front wrapper rear wrapper blank all other parts with called for ads on wrappers; twelve-line errata slip present in Part V "delight" for "joy" twice on page 284; "Captain" on last line of page 324;  page 426 “if†is not present on line 9; on page 431 the page number is not present which marks it as the earliest issue. In very good condition. Housed in a custom cloth chemise and slipcase. Scarce and desirable. Dombey and Son "was well received by its readers and is considered to be the first novel that reflects Dickens's artistic maturity… Dickens told his first biographer 'It was to do with Pride what its predecessor Martin Chuzzlewit has done with Selfishness" Schlicke 280. The work "has a sense of the numinous is more profoundly touched by the sense of last things than any of Dickens' previous novels. It is larger in conception so that human life is seen in terms of its beginning and its end so that grief and forgiveness become more powerful forces within it… Dickens is aware of its status as art and provides here a simulacrum of human life touched by majesty and purpose" Ackroyd 526. Royal octavo 88 weekly parts as issued original white wrappers printed in black with wood-engraved title engraved frontispieces illustrated with wood-engravings and initials after George Cattermole & Hablot Knight Browne. Accompanied by a 4 page announcement by Chapman & Hall for the title. In very good to near fine condition. Housed in a custom half red morocco and tan cloth slipcase with folding chemise. Master Humphrey's Clock originally appeared in the form of a weekly periodical published between April of 1840 and December of 1841. Entirely written and edited by Dickens the magazine included both short stories and two novels The Old Curiosity Shop and Barnaby Rudge. Many of the short stories acted as frame stories to the novels and although Dickens' original artistic intent was to keep the short stories and the novels together he himself cancelled Master Humphrey's Clock before 1848 and described in a preface to The Old Curiosity Shop that he wished the story to not be tied down to the miscellany it began within. Most later anthologies published the short stories and the novels separately. However the short stories and the novels were published in 1840 in three bound volumes under the title Master Humphrey's Clock which retains the full and correct ordering of texts as they originally appeared. ‎1841. Rare autograph note by great Victorian novelist Charles Dickens. One page dated ninth June 1841 and signed in the third person to John Critchley Prince. The note reads in full "From Mr. Charles Dickens in payment of his subscription to Mr. Prince's Poems. With every friendly wish that can encourage and cheer him in his onward path. 1 Devonshire Terrace York Gate Regents Park Ninth June 1841." The recipient John Critchley Prince 1808-66 was a Lancashire-born poet and weaver known as the "Bard of Hyde" the "poet of the people" and the "factory bard." In 1840 he published his first book of poetry Hours with the Muses to which Dickens subscribed. Dickens and Prince became correspondents although little of their letters have survived with Dickens often praising the amateur poet encouraging his continued writing and offering him advice on publishing his work. Prince dedicated his Poetic Rosary 1851 to Dickens "as a sincere testimony of the high esteem in which his humanizing writings with their wide and generous sympathies are held by his obedient servant the author." In very good condition. Framed with one issue of Dickens's All the Year Round December 5 1874; No. 314 New Series to the left and an engraved portrait of Dickens to the right. The novel was written in conscious emulation of Scott and follows the anti-Catholic Gordon riots of 1780. It was first published alongside The Old Curiosity Shop in Master Humphrey's Clock 1840-41 the two works representing the "pinnacle of Dickensian Gothic" Ray 60. The separate edition was bound directly from the unaltered sheets with the pagination beginning at page 229. The pagination restarts at page 1 at the beginning of Volume III. Provenance: Raymond Briggs 1934-2022 the illustrator graphic novelist cartoonist and author with his posthumous book label. The winner of numerous awards including the Kate Greenaway Medal twice the Hans Christian Andersen Award the Boston Globe-Horn Book Award and the Kurt Maschler Award Briggs noted that "the whole point of illustration is that it is literary. If it is not it remains a drawing only. Something must be 'going on' in the illustration" Horne p. 124. He is chiefly remembered for Father Christmas 1973 Fungus the Bogeyman 1978 When the Wind Blows 1982 and the perennial classic The Snowman 1978. Large octavo bound without the publisher's statement. Charles Dickens's first son also called Charles had a varied career including working as a publisher. This eccentric book is a mixture of travel guide and an exploration of the eccentricities of Victorian London and The Thames. This volume went into several editions but the first is genuinely scarce. Even more scarce is a copy in such excellent condition. The pages are bright and clean the green pages of advertising to front and rear are bright and clean. The boards are a little rubbed but generally excellent with a classic Victorian design. It's a lovely item. Interestingly the title page has an inscription "With Compliments 1881" with the 1881 crossed out. The name is not clear and I assume it is the dedicatee. It is thus possible that the dedication is also by Charles Dickens Jr though I cannot guarantee this. Following the immense success of A Christmas Carol which first appeared in December of 1843 Dickens published four other Christmas tales: The Chimes 1844 The Cricket on the Hearth 1845 The Battle of Life 1846 and The Haunted Man and the Ghost's Bargain 1848; these were secular conversion tales which acknowledged the progressive societal changes of the previous year and highlighted those social problems which still needed to be addressed. Writing after the successes of Pickwick Papers 1837 and Oliver Twist 1838 Dickens "did not want to lose either his reputation as a topical and polemical novelist or his fame as a comic one. So in Nicholas Nickleby he devised a plot capacious enough to include both aspects of his genius" Ackroyd p. 254. The novel was serialized from April 1838 to October 1839 and published in book form on 23 October. This copy has the first state frontispiece and initial four plates all with the imprint and the earlier readings "visiter" for "sister" p. 123 line 17 and "latter" for "letter" p. 160 line 6 up.
