Charles Dickens' second novel follows orphan Oliver Twist as he escapes to London meets a gang of juvenile pickpockets led by the elderly criminal Fagin and discovers the secrets of his parentage. An early example of the social novel Dickens satirises child labour domestic violence and the presence of street children. This copy previously held at Delapre Abbey a mansion in Northampton England with the engraved armorial bookplate to the front paste downs. In a uniform contemporary half calf binding with marbled paper boards. Externally quite worn with lifting to the spines and strain to Vol. II front joint. Like many of his works David Copperfield was originally published in serial form first appearing between the years of 1849 and 1850. The story follows the coming of age of the named protagonist and drawing on many of Dickens' own experiences it is often reported to be the author's favourite work. Little Dorrit was published between the years of 1855 and 1857. Dickens uses the character of Amy Dorrit to build a satirical commentary on the intertwining of debt and poverty with contemporary British status and society. Externally smart with slight bumping and rubbing leading to a few small closed tears to the head and tail of David Copperfield and minor loss of cloth to the joints and spine tips of both volumes. Boards furnished with the odd mark the most prominent being to the rear of Little Dorrit. Internally pages 13-14 of David Copperfield very fragile one plate entirely loose but present and tipped in and tissue guard to frontispiece also delicate. Little Dorrit more firmly bound. Slipcases the majority of which are bound in crushed morocco but with one bound in cloth area trifle worn with rubbing to the edges however they are structurally good. The Life and Adventures of Martin Chuzzlewit.

Publisher's deluxe binding First edition in book form in the publisher's full morocco binding the most deluxe of the three original binding options offered by the publisher and very scarce. Martin Chuzzlewit was initially issued in monthly parts from December 1842 to July 1844 and in book form on completion. In an advertisement in the final monthly part the publishers announced that it could be purchased in three formats: in cloth for £1 1s. in half morocco with marbled edges for £1 4s. 6d. and in full morocco with gilt edges for £1 6s. 6d. This full morocco binding is much scarcer than copies in the original cloth which are themselves by no means common. This is the first copy of this novel in the full morocco binding that we have handled. The early owner of this copy Howell Blood whose signature dated 1862 appears on a preliminary blank was typical of the customer Chapman and Hall was targeting with their offer of deluxe full morocco binding - the upwardly-mobile middle class with pretensions to have the "best looking" copies of Britain's newest literary sensation. "The sons of small farmers retail traders and small masters. were now benefiting from the reformed grammar schools and recently founded academies. A first generation Witham solicitor Joseph Howell Blood was clerk to the powerful attorney Jacob Howell Pattisson related through his mother's side. By the 1840s Blood had become clerk of the workhouse clerk of the JP's bench and chairman of the Board of Guardians the kind of post that would not have existed in the eighteenth century. By the 1850s he had set up his own legal practice in the town later joined by his eldest son" Davidoff & Hall p. 265. The ownership signature may be that of either Joseph Howell 1806-1876 or his son Howell 1837-1911 who was educated at Rugby and became a clergyman. Chapman and Hall continued to issue first edition sheets for many years after publication binding up copies from their stock as required including in this deluxe format. There are many variations between the morocco bindings of Dickens's novels variations which have not yet been subject to a sustained bibliographical study identifying priority - the marbled endpapers and gilt turn-ins here are indicative of binding in the 1850s. Martin Chuzzlewit is placed by Dickens's biographer Peter Ackroyd as marking "a great change in Dickens's conception of moral characteristics. For the first time Dickens begins to explore the contradictions and difficulties of the contemporary human world; these are no longer figures defined by a single characteristic or animated by the wilful principle of a 'humour' but ones who are seen to change with the changing world to live and grow" Ackroyd p. 392. Dickens wrote to John Forster on 2 November 1843 that "I think Chuzzlewit is a hundred points immeasurably the best of my stories" Pilgrim Letters III pp. 590. Octavo 211 x 132 mm. Engraved frontispiece and vignette title page £ sign not transposed no priority 38 plates by Hablot Knight Browne Phiz. Bound without half-title. Original purple pebble-grain morocco spine lettered in gilt spine bands and covers ruled in blind gilt floral turn-ins marbled endpapers gilt edges. With ink ownership signature of "Howell Blood Witham 1862" to initial binder's blank and his pencil ownership signature to facing binder's blank see note. Slight splits and wear at head of joints but holding firm offsetting to preliminaries plates browned as often early gatherings and first plate somewhat soiled with a few peripheral nicks and chips letterpress leaves afterwards clean small patch of tape repair in gutter of p. 32 6 cm closed tear affecting text without loss to pp. 461/2 3 cm closed tear not affecting text to pp. 603/4. Each issue cost one shilling though the final double issue cost two shillings."Bleak House" is narrated by Esther Summerson describing her house of Bleak House where she goes to live under a new guardian Mr Jarndyce. At the heart of the novel is a long running legal case Jarndyce and Jarndyce in the Court of Chancery. The case surrounds a number of several conflicting wills written by the same person. This case was probably inspired by the Thellusson vs Woodford case a will which was read in 1797 and was contested and not determined until 1859. The novel actually held support a judicial reform in the form of the 1870s Judicature Acts.Complete with all plates by Phiz.Part I published in March 1852 containing chapters 1 to 4. The first book edition first printing with issue points according to Eckel 'elgble' to p.19 line 6; 'chair' instead of 'hair' to p.209 line 23; 'counsinship instead of cousinship' to pg.275 line 22. Other edition points inaccessible as the volume is bound in with chapters I-XXXII up to p.320 of 624pp. With the imprint of Bradbury and Evans on vignette title. No half title. Originally published in a series of twenty-episodes between 1852 and 1853. Bleak House is one of Charles Dickens' most popular novels with a vastly complicated plot and an immense cast of characters revolving around the long-running case of Jarndyce vs Jarndyce in the Court of Chancery. This novel helped support a reform movement in the judiciary system that led to the enactment of legal reform in the 1870. With a frontispiece and additional vignette title page as well as twenty plates with only the frontispiece being a dark plate. Collated complete as called for for the first thirty-two chapters.Illustrated by Hablot Knight Browne also known by his pen name "Phiz" English illustrator who illustrated ten of Charles Dickens' books including 'David Copperfield' and 'Dombey and Son'. With Library bookplate to the front pastedown. Previous ownership inscription to the front free endpaper undated. Internally firmly bound. Light spotting scattered throughout. Occasional ownership inscriptions to the back of the occasional plate. With a frontispiece and additional vignette title page as well as twenty plates with only the frontispiece being a dark plate. Including the engraved title page bound in to Part XIX/XX.Dark plates present to Parts I II III IV VII VIII and XIX/XX.Collated; the extra 'Winter Season advert' to Part I is lacking; in Part X the first and second adverts are torn with significant loss; in part XI 'Cassell's Illustrated Almanack' is only six pages rather than the eight pages called for; and in Part XIII lacking the slip 'New Serial Work.Ask Mama'.'Little Dorrit' follows Amy Dorrit who was born and raised in the Marshalsea debtors prison. It was originally published in monthly instalments over nineteen months and this is the first edition published in a complete book.Illustrated by Hablot Knight Browne most often known by his penname 'Phiz'. As Phiz he illustrated many of Dickens' novels including 'David Copperfield' 'Dombey and Son' and 'Bleak House' as well as illustrating for 'Punch' throughout his life. In the original publisher's paper wraps in a custom cloth box. Externally generally smart with some discoloration to the wraps. Light edge wear to the wraps heavier to the backstrip where edge wear has resulted in loss. Both wraps to Part I are detached but present. A few light handling marks to the wraps. Front wrap of Part VI is detached but present. Wraps of Part VII are lifting a little to the tail. Wraps of Part VIII are detached but present with large closed tears to the front wrap and a few smaller closed tears to the following leaves of adverts. Part IV has been rebacked with white paper to the spine. Circulating library sticker to the front wrap of Part XVI. Prior owner's ink inscription to the head of the wraps. Internally firmly bound. Pages are a little age-toned and clean with the occasional spot including some spots to the plates. Faint tide mark to the dark plate of Part II.
