Neill, John R; Dickens, Charles
A CHRISTMAS CAROL
Chicago: The Reilly & Lee Co 1915. Fine in very good dust jacket. First edition thus John R. Neill's delightful take on the Christmas classic part of the Children's Red Book Series. Written in only six weeks at a low point in Dickens's career - and printed at his own expense when his publishers didn't want to take on the risk themselves - A CHRISTMAS CAROL Carol revived Dickens's fortunes. The characters of Scrooge and Marley Bob Cratchit and Tiny Tim are immediately recognizable even to those who've never read a word of Dickens: "'God bless us every one!' said Tiny Tim the last of all." Les Standiford calls it "the very apotheosis of Dickens's themes" 5 in his book THE MAN WHO INVENTED CHRISTMAS which argues that Dickens's Christmas tale shaped traditions of the holiday for decades to come. Indeed the singular success of the book would help establish a robust market for Christmas gift books that thrives to this day.
Here Oz artist John R. Neill's illustrations have lent extra charm to the beloved tale. A CHRISTMAS CAROL is one of his rarer works particularly in original dust jacket. A merry and bright copy. 6.75'' x 4.75''. Original blue boards with large color pictorial paper paste-on. Original unclipped no price color pictorial dust jacket. Color pictorial endpapers of a variety of children's book characters including Mother Goose and Peter Rabbit. Illustrated in color and black and white. 60 pages. Jacket mildly toned with two moderate chips and shallower chipping to spine ends; four careful tape repairs to verso. Binding with a touch of edgewear. Sharp and clean. The Reilly & Lee Co unknown

The Posthumous Papers of the Pickwick Club
London: Chapman and Hall 1837. First edition. Near Fine. Bound in the publisher's full crushed purple morocco all edges gilt. Stamped in gilt on the spine and with blind rules on the boards and spine. With original yellow-coated end papers. A lovely Near Fine copy overall. One spot of offsetting on the first couple leaves otherwise quite clean internally. The book complete and entirely unrestored.

Collating xvi 609 1 complete with half title and 43 inserted plates. A few of Hatton and Cleaver's first issue points to the later half of text; all plates in the Phiz states and with the later Chapman & Hall imprints. Given that the early parts continued to be reprinted and corrected while the later parts were produced it is common for the cloth-bound or publisher's morocco-bound copies to have most of the earlier misprints corrected as here.

Dickens' first novel showcasing his astounding talent for sketching charming sympathetic characters helped to launch his career. "Its main literary value and appeal was formed by its numerous memorable characters. The Pickwick Papers are mostly a series of humorous misadventures with a bit of satire that give some insight into the mores of Victorian society. You can witness Dickens here working on a few prototypes that will show up in later novels.you also see his social consciousness manifesting itself" Inverarity. An important early work that remains beloved by Dickens' fans for its sensationalism and humor. Near Fine. Chapman and Hall unknown

Charles DICKENS
Bleak House
London: Bradbury & Evans 1853. Fine. Bradbury & Evans London 1853 13.50 x 21.50 cm relié First edition illustrated with an engraved title with vignette 39 plates by H. K. Browne including 10 mezzotints including the frontispiece. All the drawings were executed according to very precise recommendations by Dickens the mezzotint engravings expressing despair and the dark sides of the novel while the caricatural figures express joy and humor. As with all of Dickens's works this novel first appeared in serial form March 1852 to September 1853. First printing points: ""elgble"" p19 line 6; ""chair"" p209 line 23; ""counsinship"" p275 line 22 English binding in half burgundy shagreen with small corners. Spine with false raised bands richly decorated. Brown shagreen title label. Traces of rubbing to joints headcaps bands corners and edges. Boards also rubbed. While the text paper is rather clean despite yellowing of some margins near the figures that of the engravings constantly shows browning sometimes heavy mainly in the margins an almost systematic case in Dickens editions due to the use of more acidic paper for the engravings. A few small stains or foxing in the text. Good copy well bound a rare case for these popular editions. The ninth novel published by Dickens and the first of the great panoramic novels depicting society Bleak House came to life in France in 1858 under the title: La maison d'âpre-vent. A profound originality at the time the novel uses two narrators one in the third person the other in the first. The opposition of the two narrations stigmatizes the relationship of the individual to the functioning of society. Many critics see it as one of the author's finest creations. Bookplate of Syan Siennen. Bradbury & Evans hardcover
