Rackham Dickens, Charles
Der Weihnachtsabend.
1917. Zürich Rascher & Cie. 1917. 8 142 S. 1 Bl. Mit 12 mont. farb. Tafeln von Arthur Rackham. Orig.-Lederband mit reicher Deckel- und Rückenvergoldung. Vgl. Hudson 169 u. "Rackham is not usually remembered as an illustrator of Dickens but A Christmas Carol was decidedly successful for he contrived to adapt the tradition of 'Phiz' and Cruikshank to his own characteristic style in the pictures of Victorian London and at the same time found scope for his fantasy in the ghost scenes. We also find him here developing his special talent for silhouette rare among illustrators. That he only once attempted Dickens again - with The Chimes for the Limited Editions Club in 1931 - may be a matter for regret for he was well qualified by sympathy to interpret Dickens in certain of his moods" Hudson S. 106. - Im Schnitt leicht gebräunt. Dickens feared that his readers had become weary of stories in monthly issues on account of the lapse of time between the numbers. At the request of Chapman & Hall he outlined his planspartially in a letter when he wrote among other things: "To introduce a little club or knot of characters and to carry their personal histories and proceedings through the work; to introduce fresh characters constantly; to re-introduce Mr. Pickwick and Sam Weller; x x x to write amusing essays on the various foibles of the as they form of the papers by throwing them into sketches letters from imaginary correspondents and so forth so as to diversify the contents as much as possible." DICKENS, Charles
A supernaturally preserved Druid.
1900. The original illustration signed by the artist for this humorous character portrait: "There was a hanger-on at that establishment a supernaturally preserved Druid I believe him to have been and to be still with long white hair and a flinty blue eye always looking afar off; who claimed to have been a shepherd and who seemed to be ever watching for the reappearance on the verge of the horizon of some ghostly flock of sheep that had been mutton for many ages. He was a man with a weird belief in him that no one could count the stones of Stonehenge twice and make the same number of them; likewise that any one who counted them three times nine times and then stood in the centre and said "I dare!" would behold a tremendous apparition and be stricken dead."
