Light scuffing and wear to the extremities scuffing to joints and a small superficial crack at the head of the spine with the suggestion of a repair strong and solid a handsome deluxe binding; all edges gilt; internally clean and fresh marbled endpapers. A very good copy with a little scuffing and wear to the binding.<br /> <br /> Originally published in Household Words in 1850 and included in a published collection in 1858 but with no separate edition until this one in 1871 and oddly no accompanying UK edition until 1899. The pamphlet was never reprinted in Dickens' lifetime. Two facsimile editions appeared in 1884; the first edition is distinguished by the words "Sunday Under Three Heads" beginning page 35 and the spelling "hair" rather than "air" on page 7 line 15. Original artwork. c.1836. An original drawing by Halbot K. Browne "Phiz" illustrating Charles Dickens' first novel. Ink and wash heightened in white on paper. Signed and humorously inscribed by the author in black ink "Charles Dickens his X mark" upper right. The image measures 17.8 x 13.2cm. In very good condition with some toning and a few light foxing spots. Laid down and mounted. The mount measures 28 x 22.8cm and is inscribed in a later hand in black ink 'The Ghostly Passengers in the Ghost of a Mail by "Phiz". Housed in a quarter red calf slipcase and silk cloth chemise with titles in gilt to the spine. A remarkable Dickens artifact bringing together the author and his preferred illustrator at the very beginning of their career-long partnership. First issued in 20 weekly parts between March 1836 to November 1837 'The Pickwick Papers' skyrocketed the young Dickens from obscurity to the position of the best-selling novelist of his time. This is the original drawing from which the engraving was made. The printed illustration appears in reverse in part 17 of the parts issue and as plate 37 opposite page 523 of the first state of the published work in book form. The author's inscription is a wonderfully humorous reference to an episode in the novel when Pickwick discovers an old stone seemingly engraved with the words 'X / BILST / UM / PHSI / S.M. / ARK'. Believing it to be of Roman origin he buys it from the owner a farmer for 10 shillings and later takes it back to London where his lectures and findings on the subject are accepted by dozens of experts in British and foreign historical societies. Hoping to expose Pickwick Mr Blotton a rival in an upcoming election visits the farmer a Mr. Stumps and discovers that the illiterate old man had indeed carved the stone himself intending that it should read 'X BILL STUMPS HIS MARK'. Despite Blotton's best efforts Pickwick has the last laugh as all the learned societies eventually pronounce in favour of their much-lauded hero resulting in Blotton's expulsion from the club. The first edition of Oliver Twist in original cloth is a cornerstone in any Dickens collection. Publication of the serial in Bentley's Miscellany began in 1837 and "when Bentley decided to publish Oliver Twist in book form before its completion in his periodical Cruikshank was forced to complete the last few plates in haste. Dickens did not review them until the eve of publication and objected to the "Fireside" plate.and also disliked having "Boz" on the titlepage. He voiced these objections prior to the publication and the plate and the titlepage were changed between November 9 and 16" Smith 34. Smith I 4. Eckel pp. 59-62.<br /> <br /> Provenance: Each volume with the bookplates of the Albert Henry Wiggen 1868-1951 noted book collector and "the most colorful and attractive figure in the commercial banking world" the only member of the Federal Reserve Bank to have a law written specifically against his actions the "Wiggin Provision". On the upside he was also a noted book and print collector and a major donor to the Boston Public Library the New York Public Library and the Baltimore Museum of Art. This book passed to his son-in-law Lynde Selden whose two bookplates are also found in two of the three volumes. unknown

Folkestone 1855. 2 pp. 1 vols. 8vo. Written on the first and last pages of a folded sheet in blue ink. Chemise and half green morocco slipcase with spine lettered in gilt. 2 pp. 1 vols. 8vo. In late summer of 1855 Dickens agrees to a public reading of A Christmas Carol already a much-loved work at Peterborough in December. He first read his ghost story of Christmas at Birmingham in 1853 and had reprised the performances the following year. "The public readings of Charles Dickens which were to play so large and in some respects so fatal a part in his life were from the start specifically associated with his philanthropic activities" Ackroyd Dickens p. 666.<br /> <br /> "Resuming the correspondence I had the pleasure of holding with you some time since I beg to say that I shall be happy to read my Christmas Carol at Peterborough on the morning of Tuesday the 18th of December. As I shall stay there but a few hours and shall probably be accompanied by at least two friends I shall not be able to have the honor of accepting your hospitality; but I feel greatly obliged to you for offering it. When the arrangements for the occasion shall begin to be in progress may I beg you to contact my friend Mr W. H. Wills of the Household Words office London. Mr. Wills will give him any information he may desire as to the time the reading will occupy and as to my own little requirements with a view to position &c."<br /> <br /> Dickens' readings were well attended and he gave memorable moving performances. In December in the midst of work on Little Dorrit which had just begun serial publication Dickens went to Peterborough and gave his reading at the Mechanics' Institute returned to London "where the people I met on their way to offices were actually sobbing and crying with cold"; up North to Sheffield for another performance then back to London like "an enormous top in full spin" and off to Paris to resume work on the novel in progress Ackroyd pp. 751-2. Complete in the original twenty parts in the original wrappers with only very shallow restoration to the spine ends. The set is textually complete with all illustrations present though advertisements vary from the ideal copy carefully checked against Hatton and Cleaver. Parts 1 and 2 are complete with all ads. Part 3 is missing the ads on pp. 7/8 with a small chip to the ad on p. 9. Part 4 lacks the bottom half of the ad on pp. 13/14 and the rear ads on pp. 5/6 are also missing. Part 5 is without the final ad for Glenfield Starch and Part 6 lacks the final leaf of ads for Cramer & Co. and Glenfield Starch. Part 7 is missing the rear ads for Slip Kaye's Worsdell's Pills and Thomson's Prize Medal Skirts while Part 8 lacks the ad at the front on pp. 13/14 and one rear ad. Part 9 is missing the front ad on pp. 11/12. These first nine wrappers remain in good condition overall with a few minor paper repairs to the spine tips and some chipping to the corners of the first part's cover. Part 10 features the "Our Mutual Friend Advertiser" with page 13 misprinted as 31 as noted by Hatton and Cleaver. Part 11 is missing the final ad "A Slip-In Twenty Parts.The Headless Horseman." Parts 12 and 13 each lack the front ad on pp. 3/4. Part 14 is missing the front ad on pp. 9/10 and the Economic Life Assurance Society ad following the plates. Part 15 lacks several rear ads including Slip-Keating's Persian Insect Destroying Powder and two of the four pages of The Book of Perfumes; the Liverpool London & Globe four-page catalogue is missing half of the first page. Part 16 retains all ads though the Mappin & Webb ad appears in a different position than usual. Part 17 is lacking one rear ad Mappin otherwise complete. Part 18 contains a duplicate four-page Norton's Pills ad at the rear and lacks two pages of the Mappin & Webb ad. Parts 19 and 20 are missing the Economic Life Assurance Society ad following the plates as well as the rear ad for The Anthelmintic Big Bon; the Boosey & Co. ad is missing pp. 1-2 but retains pp. 3-4. Overall a very good and textually complete set in the original parts with the ads in various states and levels of completeness as detailed above. The wrappers are bright and well-preserved a nice copy in its original serialized form. Hatton & Cleaver 345-370. There were numerous items produced to commemorate his life but the quality of this particular portrait makes it one of the scarcer ones especially in such very good condition. <br /><br />Much in Dickens' work could appeal to the simple and the sophisticated to the poor and to Queen Victoria no less. Technological developments as well as the qualities of his work enabled his fame to spread world-wide very quickly. His long career saw fluctuations in the reception and sales of individual novels but none of them was negligible or uncharacteristic or disregarded. Even though he is now admired for aspects and phases of his work that were given less weight by his contemporaries his popularity has never ceased.<br /> [Circa 1880]. unknown
