Charles Dickens’ novels regularly revolved around masks dual identities and other secrets. The Mystery of Edwin Drood however “enlarged and strengthened such matters in the pursuit of a larger vision a vision which depicts the ‘lanes of light’ between the dark pillars of a crypt and which reflects upon ‘that mysterious fire which lurks in everything†Ackroyd 1056. Unfortunately at the time of his death on June 9 1870 Dickens had written only six parts of the book three of which had been published. The remaining three were published posthumously. Dickens had so closely guarded the plot’s outlines even from his closest friends that to this day the identity of Drood’s killer remains a topic for speculation discussion and debate. “There are few of Dickens’ stories which are superior in the matter of composition… one of the best unfinished mystery stories in literature†Eckel 96. The literary sketches contained in The Uncommercial Traveller first appeared in serial form in Dickens' journal All the Year Round. The persona of the 'uncommercial traveller' echoed Dickens' personal sentiments as a writer who liked to travel not only as a tourist but also to research and report what he found visiting Europe American and cities and towns throughout Great Britain. Dickens did not seem content to rest late in his career when he had attained wealth and comfort and continued travelling locally walking the streets of London in the mould of the flâneur a "gentleman stroller of city streets". He often suffered from insomnia and his night-time wanderings gave him an insight into some of the hidden aspects of Victorian London details of which he also incorporated into his novels. Each portrait signed by the artist in red ink. The images printed on watermarked laid paper with untrimmed rough-cut edges. Condition is very good with toning to the left hand side of the title page. The watercolour portraits themselves remain clean fresh and bright.� An attractive suite of original watercolour illustrations depicting characters from Dickens' unfinished final novel The Mystery of Edwin Drood by the noted artist Joseph Clayton "Kyd" Clarke 1857-1937. The set includes Mr. Dick Datchery Durdles Deputy Mr. Tope Rev. Crisparkle and Mr. Grewgious. Kyd's first Dickens illustrations appeared in 1887 in Fleet Street Magazine. They achieved immediate popularity with two published collections appearing shortly after and numerous sets of postcards based on his Dickens drawings also released. Following this initial success Kyd earned his living creating sets of watercolour portraits such as these which found many eager buyers. Indeed as early as the 1890s his popular characterful sketches which drew significantly on the work of the original Dickens illustrators Hablot Knight Browne 'Phiz' and Robert Seymour were being sought by major Dickens collectors such as Thomas Wilson and Frederick Cosens. London: Bradbury & Evans 1854. An attractive copy in the original cloth First edition in book form in the first issue binding with the price in gilt on the spine which was removed in later issues. Hard Times was the shortest but also arguably the most political of Dickens's novels as well as being the only novel set entirely outside of London. The novel was originally issued in 20 weekly parts from April to August 1854. This copy has the later states of pages 122 231 and 265 with Smith's textual errors corrected; sheets with the varying states were bound at random and the points do not have bearing on priority of issue. Octavo. Original green cloth spine lettered in gilt spine and covers decoratively blocked in blind. Housed in a custom green cloth folding box. Contemporary bookseller's ticket of Henry Greer Belfast to front pastedown. Spine and board edges faded to brown spine ends gently bumped with a couple of tiny chips a touch of rubbing to corners inner hinges superficially split but firm edges a little foxed contents generally clean. The dedicatee Angela Burdett-Coutts became one of the wealthiest women in England in 1837 when she inherited her grandfather's fortune of around £1.8 million following the death of her step grandmother Harriot Beauclerk Duchess of St Albans. She spent the majority of her wealth on scholarships endowments and a wide range of philanthropic causes. One of her earliest philanthropic acts was to co-found with Charles Dickens a home for young women who had "turned to a life of immorality" including theft and prostitution. The home was known as Urania Cottage. In near condition. The last of Dickens picaresque novels The Life and Adventures of Martin Chuzzlewit was originally serialized between 1843 and 1844. Dickens thought it to be his best work and William Boyd proclaimed it "Dickens' funniest novel." Like nearly all of Dickens's novels Martin Chuzzlewit was first published in monthly instalments. Early sales of the monthly parts were lower than those of previous works so Dickens changed the plot to send the title character to the United States. He satirized the country as a place filled with self-promoting hucksters eager to sell land sight unseen. Octavo three volumes bound in full royal blue crushed levant morocco by Bayntun Bindery with gilt titles and tooling to the spine in six compartments within raised gilt bands gilt ruling to the front and rear panels gilt turn-ins and wide gilt inner dentelles stamp-signed by Bayntun all edges gilt. The earliest impression of Dickens' rarest novel. This copy agrees in all points with Margaret Caldwell's extensive analysis of the differing impressions in the Clarendon edition of Great Expectations. As in the Lawrence Drizen copy sold in 2019 at Sotheby’s and in the Clarendon edition the third volume here contains the numeral “3†in the pagination on p. 103 and the initial “i†in “inflexible†on p. 193 which are sometimes missing in copies of the first impression of the third volume indicating that the present copy is among the earlier printings of the first impression. Smith comments that “the rarity of the first issue of Great Expectations has been attributed to the probable small binding-up of copies with the first title-page coupled with the fact according to C.P. Johnson “Hints to Collectors†that “the first edition was almost entirely taken up by the libraries.†Only 1000 copies of the first issue and 750 copies of the second were printed and that probably most of the first and more than half of the second 1400 copies in all were purchased by Mudie’s Select Library. Eckel pp. 91-93; Sadleir 688; Smith I:14. In fine condition. An exceptional example of one of Dickens' great masterpieces. Dickens' penultimate novel Great Expectations was written in "the afternoon of his life and fame" G.K. Chesterton. The novel contains some of Dickens' most memorable scenes including its opening set in a graveyard when the young orphan Pip is accosted by escaped convict Abel Magwitch. Upon its release the novel received near universal acclaim. Although Dickens' contemporary Thomas Carlyle referred to it disparagingly as "that Pip nonsense" he nevertheless reacted to each fresh instalment with "roars of laughter." Later George Bernard Shaw praised the novel as "all of one piece and consistently truthful." During the serial publication Dickens was pleased with public response to Great Expectations and its sales; when the plot first formed in his mind he called it "a very fine new and grotesque idea." Twenty parts in nineteen octavo four to thirty-two pages of preliminary advertisements; text continuously paginated 1-624; eight leaves of preliminaries follow text in final part. Frontispiece vignette title-page and thirty-eight additional inserted plates the majority with tissue inserts as issued. Original blue-green illustrated paper wrappers. Several backstrips chipped at head and foot; some light soiling wear at hinges; some parts skewed. In excellent condition an unrestored example of Dickens' classic work. Includes the scarce insert "Lett's diaries" advertisement at end of Part VIII which unfolds to a 26 inches with ten specimen diary leaves. According to Hatton & Cleaver this is a "particularly scarce" insert. Hatton & Cleaver pp. 253-272. Housed in a custom half morocco and chemise box.
