Master Humphrey’s Clock.
London: Chapman and Hall 1840. First edition of this collection of short stories. Large octavo 3 volumes original blindstamped pictorial cloth gilt titles and tooling to the spine and front panel marbled endpapers all edges marbled engraved frontispiece with tissue guard in each volume illustrated by George Cattermole and Hablot Browne. In very good condition with a few chips to the spines. An attractive example. Master Humphrey's Clock was a weekly serial that contained both short stories and two novels The Old Curiosity Shop and Barnaby Rudge. Some of the short stories act as frame stories to the novels so the ordering of publication is important. Although Dickens' original artistic intent was to keep the short stories and the novels together he himself cancelled Master Humphrey's Clock before 1848 and described in a preface to The Old Curiosity Shop that he wished the story to not be tied down to the miscellany it began within. Most later anthologies published the short stories and the novels separately. However the short stories and the novels were published in 1840 in three bound volumes under the title Master Humphrey's Clock which retains the full and correct ordering of texts as they originally appeared. Facsimile edition printed on vellum according to Gimbel "one of only three copies that were printed on vellum." As with the Gimbel vellum copy this copy is rebound and without wrappers. The Gimbel catalogue identifies copies with and without 4 leaves of front- and end-matter containing an introduction though to be by T.J. Wise and Jarvis ads and notes "another impression" with the heading "Sunday Under Three Heads" on p. 35. The present copy is without the the introduction and ads though the original Chapman and Hall ads are reproduced at the end and has the heading on p. 35.<br /> Sunday Under Three Heads published under the pseudonym Timothy Sparks was "a pamphlet directed against the Sunday Observance Billl an Evangelical measure which would have severly curtailed the Sunday amusements of the labouring and middle classes" Ackroyd p. 185. Full olive green fine-diaper cloth entirely stamped in blind with a three line border which encloses a rectangular frame within which is is an ornament of leaves and stems in each corner and a chain-like design with each link enclosing a four-leafed flower. Housed in a green cloth slip-case. The head and tail of the backstrip are very slightly bumped with some sun toning; minor scattered foxing mostly near plates and some off-setting; a good clean copy in a beautifully preserved original cloth binding.<br /> <br /> § First edition in the rare secondary green cloth binding. Two of the eight internal flaws identified by Smith as necessary for the first issue have been corrected: "l" and "f" are printed on p.116 and 213 is numbered correctly. Of the latter point Eckel observes "The absence of this error does not invalidate a first edition but it fixes the priority of printing" and Smith concludes "this binding is probably of a later state than the red morocco cloth one" i.e. second issue. "When Dickens began the publication of All the Year Round the successor of Household Words he realized the necessity of making a strong start. So he began writing A Tale of Two Cities publishing the first of the serial in the opening number of his new periodical. As a novel of great popularity it probably ranks next to Pickwick and Copperfield" Eckel 87. This was the last novel in which Dickens worked with "Phiz" after a partnership of 23 years and was published on commission through the renewed partnership with Chapman & Hall. Podeschi A143. Some backstrips and hinges mended edges slightly rubbed and chipped occasionally minor foxing to plates overall remarkably good condition for such an ephemeral publication; very good. <br /> <br /> § First edition in the original parts of Dickens's favorite of his novels. It was the first of his major works to be written in the first person and by his own admission contained much autobiography: "a very complicated weaving of truth and invention" Letters VII 515. This set contains all of the advertisements slips steel engraved plates and specimens listed by Hatton & Cleaver except for rear insert "2" in part twelve eight pages or four; there are six specimens of Letts' Diaries in part eight Hatton & Cleaver 235-271. Individual parts in very good condition with only slight wear to wrappers and edges internally they seem almost to have never been read. A complete set missing only a few ads mentioned in Hatton & Cleaver with no visible signs that ads have been removed and includes ads not mentioned in Hatton & Cleaver.<br /> <br /> § First edition in the original parts. The wood engravings and cover designs were for the first time charged to the skillful hand of Marcus Stone the orphaned son of an old artist friend who worked in the "sentimental-realist style of 1860s book illustration" OxfordDNB. Our Mutual Friend was Dickens's last completed novel written slowly due too increased occasions of illness and a serious railway accident. Similar to Bleak House and Little Dorrit Our Mutual Friend comprises the usual social satire elaborate plotting and sweeping views of contemporary society differing most notably in the positive outcome of the central love stories. 1868. Large oval portrait photograph measures 20 inches by 16 inches. Matted in a contemporary frame which measures 25.5 inches by 29.5 inches. Signed "Charles Dickens with a large flourish Boston Sixth March 1868."Â In 1867 Charles Dickens began his second American reading tour at Boston's Tremont Temple where an enthusiastic audience delighted in some of his most notable works members of the audience included legendary literary stars such as Henry Wadsworth Longfellow and Ralph Waldo Emerson. Although Dickens was in declining health he embarked on an ambitious travel schedule across the United States. Dickens returned to Boston once more before concluding his U.S. tour in New York City. When Charles Dickens arrived in Boston on November 19 1867 the celebrated English author spent several days at the Parker House hotel recuperating from the voyage. As conscientious a performer as he was a writer Dickens had prepared diligently for his performances redrafting and memorizing key passages from his books especially for these engagements. He used a book only as a prop; he was so familiar with the material that he could improvise with ease. However during his 1867-1868 tour he was plagued with Flu-like symptoms insomnia and an inflammation of his foot which forced him to walk with a cane. During his last tours in 1868 Dickens confined much of his performances to the New England area. Dickens was grateful for the income he desperately needed from his readings which generated $140000 close to $2000000 today; but he longed for home. On April 8 1868 Dickens gave the last performance of the tour. Prolonged applause followed the reading. He closed by telling the audience "In this brief life of ours it is sad to do almost anything for the last time. Ladies and gentlemen I beg most earnestly most gratefully and most affectionately to bid you each and all farewell." He died two years later having written 14 novels several of which are considered classics of English literature. A desirable piece of Victorian literary history. Charles Dickens was an English writer and social critic. He created some of the world's best-known fictional characters and is regarded by many as the greatest novelist of the Victorian era. His works enjoyed unprecedented popularity during his lifetime and by the twentieth century critics and scholars had recognized him as a literary genius. unknown

Uncommon printed facsimile of this notable letter from Charles Dickens writing as the editor of All the Year Round to Rev. Hughes of St Gallgo's Church whose heroic efforts at the time of the wreck of the Royal Charter off the coast of Anglesey in August 1859 inspired Dickens to write the "little article" mentioned here published in All the Year Round for 28 January and subsequently adapted as the first chapter of The Uncommercial Traveller. The invitation extended by Dickens to the minister and his family is poignant as the strain of the exertions contributed to Hughes' untimely death on 4 February 1862.<br /> <br /> In the British Academy/Pilgrim Edition of Dickens' letters the original letter is recorded as in the collection of Mrs. A.K. Frazer; it is further noted that "facsimiles of this letter were sold by Hughes to provide a monument now in Llanallgo Church to those drowned in the Royal Charter." This allows a narrow dating to 1860 or 1861. No copies of this facsimile are recorded in the Gimbel collection in other major Dickens holdings or in OCLC.<br /> <br /> The facsimile reproduces Dickens' Office of All the Year Round letterhead in monochrome slightly reduced and the text is as follows:<br /> <br /> My Dear Mr Hughes <br /> You will receive from my printer's office by this same post a Proof of the little article I have written on the subject of my late visit. I am under the necessity of asking you to send it back to W. Wills here by return of post. For although a fortnight will elapse before it is published the mechanical necessities of this Journal and its simultaneous publication in England and America render its going to press at once imperative.<br /> I doubt whether I am quite right respecting the number of the drowned buried in your churchyard and the greatest number that lay in the church at one time. Will you do me the favour to correct me on those points And if you should observe any similar inaccuracy will you do me the additional kindness to mark it I trust that there is nothing in the article that you or your household will find displeasing. I have written it out of the honest convictions of my heart and in the hope that it will at least soften the distress of many people from whom you have not yet heard. It says for me all that I should otherwise have attempted to say in this note and merely strives to express what any visitor to you must surely feel. <br /> My daughters have taken a great interest in all I have told them and particularly in Mrs Hughes's idea of coming to London in the summer. They earnestly beg me to assure her and you that they hope to know you both very well and that it will be an uncommon gratification to them if you will come and see us down at my Kentish house on the top of Shakespeare's Gad's Hill which is little more than an hour's railway ride from town. <br /> I beg to present my true regard to the ladies of your house and to your brother and to assure you of the hearty esteem and respect with which I am Very faithfully yours <br /> Charles Dickens. <br /> This same post will also bring you the documents you also lent me returned with thanks. A very charming piece.<br> <br> Uriah Heep is a fictional character created by Charles Dickens in David Copperfield. The character is notable for his cloying humility obsequiousness and insincerity making frequent references to his own "'humbleness". His name has become synonymous with being a yes man.
