III; 3 volumes 8vo; 24 etched plates by George Cruikshank; the binding on this copy has the Bentley imprint on the base of the spines thought by Carter to be later than the binding without the Bentley imprint although Smith found no "consistent association"; this copy does not contain the leaf listing the illustrations after the title leaf in the first volume but does contain the half-titles in volumes I and II; and the text exhibits all the textual flaws outlined by Smith; also with the required leaves of ads at the back of volume I and the single leaf of ads preceding the title in vol. III. The pinnacle of Dickensian Gothic First edition in book form of what Gordon Ray describes as "the pinnacle of Dickensian Gothic" a particularly nice example in the original cloth. Ray goes on to note that Phiz H. K. Browne "is in excellent form" and that George Cattermole's "wonderful clutter of antiquarian or architectural detail is well suited to Dickens's chosen subjects". Master Humphrey was a publishing experiment on Dickens's part unique in his canon of issuing two novels together: The Old Curiosity Shop and Barnaby Rudge. The publication was issued in three forms in weekly parts monthly parts and the present book form copies in cloth upon completion. 3 vols tall octavo. Printed frontispieces and 194 woodcut illustrations of which 154 are by Browne 19 by Cattermole and 1 by Daniel Maclise. Original purplish vertical-ribbed cloth gilt lettered and decorated spines covers elaborately blindstamped front covers with gilt clock motif marbled edges and endpapers. London: Bradbury and Evans 1848. In the primary cloth First edition bound from the original parts in the publisher's primary cloth binding. The novel is "now recognized as one of the greatest of all his works. It is also the first one to have an explicitly contemporary setting" ODNB. Following issue in parts from September 1846 to March 1848 Bradbury and Evans issued the novel in book form in the present cloth. In the 19th number of the part issue a slip advertised the novel ready for delivery on 12 April at £1 1s. in cloth or £1 4s. 6d in half morocco. The slip goes on to note "Subscribers desirous of having their copies bound in a similar style can have them done by Messrs. Chapman & Hall 186 Strand or through their Booksellers at the following prices:- Whole bound morocco gilt edges 6s. 6d. Half bound marble leaves 4s. 6d. In cloth lettered 1s. 6d". This copy represents an owner of the parts making use of these binding services with the characteristic stab-holes in the gutter where unstitched from the wrappers. At such a reduced price 1s. 6d compared to £1 1s for a new copy in cloth it is evident why an owner of a complete set in parts would prefer having them bound rather than purchasing a new book-form copy. For Dickens's novels the publisher kept a stock of first edition sheets and bound up copies and issued them over time as demand required. So too owners of the parts could make use of the binding services long after publication. Changes in the cloth design over time allow the binding to be dated and a primary binding to be identified. Smith noted this binding style as a variant but incorrectly identified a binding with a chain design as the primary - the chain design was in fact introduced by Chapman and Hall in the 1860s after they acquired remaining first edition sheets from Bradbury and Evans. Similar bindings with a chain design can be seen in Chapman and Hall's Dickens publications of the 1860s see Kremers p. 249. Kremers has subsequently identified this design which he dubs "marigold" as the primary binding. "Marigold" is unique to Dombey and Son. Copies of the novel were subsequently bound into the "lineal-globe" cloth in the 1850s with a central arabesque on the covers which is the primary binding of Bleak House 1853 and Little Dorrit 1857 and the "chain" cloth in the 1860s as stated above; these are secondary bindings. The primary "marigold" binding has two variants of blocking with ornamentation on the inner frame as here and without; the variant with ornamentation is presumed by Kremers to be the earlier. The spine lettering also has two variants indiscriminate with the blocking variants the base lettered either "London 1848" or "London" only as here; the absence of the date is presumed by Kremers to be secondary state. Demy octavo. Frontispiece vignette title and 38 plates by Hablot Knight Browne Phiz; plate 35 being the first published example of a "dark plate". Original green diaper cloth Kremers' "marigold" primary spine lettered in gilt spine and covers with elaborate design in blind cream endpapers. Expertly recased with neat repair at spine ends and joints spine and extremities a little sunned slight stain to front cover and ring stain to rear some foxing as usual plates browned and stained at foot. Dombey and Son is "now recognized as one of the greatest of all his works. It is also the first one to have an explicitly contemporary setting" ODNB. The novel is further noted for containing "the first published example of a so-called dark plate which was created by a machine process that tinted the etched plate and heightened its black-and-white contrast. The one dark plate in Dombey and Son is "On the Dark Road" p. 547. The smooth blending of light and shadow on this illustration vividly contrasts it with the other illustrations in the novel and is a fine example of the dark plate process" Smith. The technique was later put to use for ten plates in Bleak House and eight in Little Dorrit. Octavo 220 x 140 mm. Etched frontispiece vignette title page and 38 plates by Hablot Knight Browne Phiz. Complete with half-title. Near-contemporary green half calf by Tout spine with raised bands compartments tooled in gilt marbled sides ruled in gilt marbled and gilt endpapers top edge gilt green silk bookmarker. With 15 wrappers from the original monthly parts bound in at rear. Contemporary ownership inscription of one E. C. Murray dated 1886 to a binder's blank contemporary newspaper clipping containing an article on Dickensian names in the London Directory pasted below further signs of ownership to wrappers. Original autograph leaf from The Posthumous Papers of the Pickwick Club.
London: before April 1837. One of only five pages of the Pickwick manuscript remaining in private hands Original autograph manuscript leaf with authorial emendations from the Pickwick Papers the novel that transformed an obscure 25-year-old journalist into England's most famous author in a matter of months. One of only five such leaves remaining in private hands this leaf is from the setting manuscript used by the printers. Fewer than 50 of the estimated 1500 pages that constituted it are known to survive. In keeping with the convention of the time Dickens's authorial manuscripts were discarded after being set in type. However on this occasion Charles Hicks c.1799-1870 the foreman-printer for Bradbury and Evans who printed the book for Chapman and Hall salvaged some of the original. Hicks's salvage comprising 33 leaves from Chapters 36 and 37 makes up "the largest number of contiguous Pickwick manuscript leaves known to survive" Long p. 32. As Dickens's fame grew he "became increasingly aware of the value of his manuscripts. and he sought with limited success to retain what he could of his early work" Long p. 32. Dickens wrote to Hicks around September 1838 requesting that "'when you have time be good enough to look me up all the old copy you have of mine as I am very anxious to have it complete'. Dickens's instruction is said to be the 'first recorded instance of CD's collection of his own MSS'" Long p. 31. In May 1840 when Dickens donated five slips from Chapter 39 of Pickwick to a charitable cause in Halifax he enclosed a note: "I have never given away any old published MS. considering that it will have a greater interest one of these days for my own family than it can ever possess for others; but your request in behalf of the Halifax Institution set me looking over a box of fragments and from its contents I have selected the enclosed original and only draught of a portion of a chapter of Pickwick to which the Association is heartily welcome" Long p. 24. The Posthumous Papers of the Pickwick Club issued monthly between April 1836 and November 1837 became a publishing phenomenon only after the introduction of Sam Weller who features in the portion of text preserved here. The comic scene occurs during a visit to Bath by Pickwick and his friends. The text begins halfway through a discussion of the chalybeate taste of the famous waters. Dickens's deletions include three full lines of text and four words blotted out; his insertions consist of three words added interlineally at the top left. The leaf is numbered "75" at the head of the page in his hand: Sadleir notes that "it is clear that Dickens numbered separately each successive instalment of manuscript delivered monthly to the printer". Although the text here is part of Chapter 37 it was published as part of Chapter 36 due to the previous misnumbering of two consecutive chapters as "XXVIII" - an error that was rectified in subsequent editions. This is one of only five leaves from the Pickwick manuscript remaining in private hands. The leaves were originally part of the 33 slips held by Hicks's family and were dispersed in their sale in 1882. They re-appeared as part of a group of 12 consecutively numbered leaves in the Suzannet sale in 1971 - the last occasion on which significant manuscripts of Dickens's works were offered at auction. Of those 12 leaves numbering from 69 to 80 the majority are now held institutionally: number 69 by the Morgan Library; number 70 by the Princeton University Library; and numbers 76 to 80 by the Free Library of Philadelphia. Leaves numbered 71 to 75 are held privately and two further slips from this sequence of leaves are also recorded: Suzannet donated number 81 to the Charles Dickens Museum in 1937 and the final slip number 82 is held by the British Library. The other leaves preserved by Hicks consisting of slips 50 to 68 from chapter 36 are today in the Rosenbach Museum and Library. All other surviving portions of the Pickwick Papers manuscript are held institutionally and comprise: five slips from chapter 19 British Library; a slip from chapter 25 and fragment of four lines from chapter 37 New York Public Library; and five consecutive slips from chapter 39 Rosenbach Museum and Library. Single leaf 230 x 185 mm. Manuscript text in brown ink on recto only. Housed in a custom pinkish-orange morocco gilt-stamped folder with cream moiré silk lining and a pinkish-orange quarter morocco clamshell case. Unobtrusive compositor's inky fingerprint at lower centre browning to very edges faint traces of mount to verso along one edge. In excellent condition. Charles Dickens: The Story of his Life.
London: John Camden Hotten 1870. The suggestion that created Oliver Twist First edition of the first posthumous biography of Dickens signed and heavily annotated by the journalist Edmund Ollier 1826-1886. Ollier's marginalia draw on long acquaintance: his father the publisher Charles Ollier had known Dickens and was a central figure in early 19th-century literary London issuing Shelley's works publishing Keats's Poems 1817 and advising Colburn and Bentley. Edmund grew up amid this milieu later contributing poetry and prose to Dickens's Household Words and earning Dickens's praise as "an excellent and true young poet". Ollier read Taverner and Hotten's hasty biography - rushed to press within a fortnight of Dickens's death - with evident irritation. He corrects factual errors journal titles illustrators dates prices adjusts several claims about Dickens's professional commitments and adds observations drawn from personal knowledge. He also records contemporary opinions such as Douglas Jerrold's views on public executions. One annotation is particularly striking: "I recollect my father used to say that Dickens originally intended to make only a short story of Oliver Twist but he my father recommended him to give it the usual three-volume dimensions. My father was at that time engaged at Bentley's." This claim - absent from standard Dickens biographies - would if accurate assign to Charles Ollier the suggestion that transformed Oliver Twist from a short tale into a full-length novel. Ollier's notes also reveal his sensitivity to his own place in Dickens's circle. On finding himself insufficiently acknowledged he protests in the third person only to retract the complaint when he discovers a reference to his contributions. His use of proofing marks and direct appeals to Hotten suggest he hoped these emendations might inform a corrected edition; none were adopted. The volume was subsequently rebound and extensively extra-illustrated in the early 20th century with over 60 added plates of Dickensian subjects producing a characteristically grangerized and visually impressive copy. Dickens defends the poor man's right to a free sabbath First edition of the young Dickens' pseudonymous political pamphlet defending the right of the poor man to a free Sabbath in opposition to a proposed law put forward by Andrew Agnew 7th Baronet Agnew of Lochnaw prohibiting all work and all recreation on a Sunday. This copy differs to the description in Eckel in that there is no "price two shillings" note on the front cover; it matches the other points which distinguish it from the two known facsimiles: the words "Sunday Under Three Heads" beginning page 35 and the spelling "hair" rather than "air" on page 7 line 15. In style subject and composition the book differed from all Dickens's other works. 3 vols duodecimo. Each vol. with the half-titles and engraved frontispieces by F. W. Topham. Original red cloth gilt titles and decoration to spine blind stamped border and gilt pictorial decoration to front board marbled endpapers and edges. Spines slightly faded a couple of ink splashes to covers small puncture to spine of Vol. III minor wear to spine ends and tips some pencilled notes and the odd spot of foxing to contents. First American edition 19 volumes 8vo text in double column within ruled borders; a fine set in contemporary half blue polished calf over marbled boards red morocco labels on gilt-decorated spines. Household Words was considerably more popular in England than America and its publishing history in America is "almost absolutely dark as is the whole subject of periodical printing and 'arrangements' . The 1850's were years of copyright agitation in America and certainly no legally protective arrangements were possible to the English publishers before the journal was discontinued in 1859. And it is not surprising that the course of Household Words was not so brilliant in America as was that of its successor All the Year Round.It was partially a local work and not quite so interesting to an America as to an English reader; it had changed publishers too often; there was no legitimate arrangement between the English proprietors and the American publishers; it was sold at too high a price; it had been published by inexperienced people and therefore had not received proper publicity and promotion; and its lack of pictorial illustration made it unpopular with the masses" Buckler William E. "'Household Words' in America" in Papers of the Bibliographical Society of America vol. 45 pp. 160-66. While the first volume was published by Putnam volumes 2 and 3 were printed from English plates and have a London imprint; those publishing the remaining volumes included in order McElrath & Lord; Angell Engel & Hewitt McElrath & Barker; T.
