The Life and Adventures of Martin Chuzzlewit
Chapman and Hall 1844. 1st Edition. Hardcover. Near Fine. The Life and Adventures of Martin Chuzzlewit was published in monthly installments 1842-1844 following the popularity of Oliver Twist and Nicholas Nickelby. Supposedly this negativity was inspired by Dickens' own trip to America in 1842. Marble pastedown free endpaper frontispiece tissue guard engraved title plate with "100£" iii title page iv copyright v dedication vi blank vii-viii preface ix-xii contents xiii-xiv list of plates xv errata 1-624 free endpaper marble pastedown. DICKENS Charles.
A Christmas Carol.
London and New York: The King Penguin Books 1946. Pictorial binding by Bayntun Octavo 176 x 117 mm. Recent red morocco by Bayntun spine lettered in gilt gilt holly and ivy motifs to compartments gilt holly and ivy frame to covers front cover with coloured morocco onlay vignette after the frontispiece gilt turn-ins marbled endpapers gilt edges. Housed in a custom red cloth slipcase. A fine copy. A beautifully bound copy of Dickens's Christmas classic being the first King Penguin facsimile edition after the original first edition of 1843. A Christmas Carol was an instant success reportedly selling all 6000 copies of the first edition on the first day of publication and Dickens went on to write four more small festive books for each successive Christmas. Of the five Christmas books however it is A Christmas Carol which has best stood the test of time and remains the most famous of all Christmas stories. "It is rather as if Dickens had rewritten a religious tract and filled it both with his own memories and with all the concerns of the period. He had in other words created a modern fairy story. And so it has remained" Peter Ackroyd p. 413. London and New York: The King Penguin Books, hardcover

DICKENS Charles.
Christmas Stories.
London: printed by Bradbury & Evans 1851-62. Octavo 234 x 156 mm. Contemporary green half calf titles and delicate floral design to spine in gilt in compartments with raised bands marbled sides endpapers and edges. Engraving to p. 5 of A Message from the Sea. Bookplates of Jeffrey Stern and Virginian bibliophile Christopher Clark Geest to front pastedown Stern's ownership inscription to first blank. A little rubbing to extremities touch of wear to tips a couple of scuffs to leather; a very good copy indeed. An attractive collection of nine of Dickens's Christmas Stories bound from the original parts consisting of What Christmas Is 1851 The Poor Relation's Story 1852 The Schoolboy's Story 1853 The Seven Poor Travellers 1854 The Holly-Tree Inn 1855 A House to Let 1858 The Haunted House 1859 A Message from the Sea 1860 and Somebody's Luggage 1862. Dickens edited Household Words and All the Year Round between 1850 and 1859 and 1859 and 1895 respectively. While there he organised these seasonal offerings analogous to his five Christmas Books by writing "in company"; composing the opening and closing pieces as a frame for stories supplied by his staff writers the majority of whom were women. The formula that Dickens pursued from 1852 to 1866 involved gathering together a group of disparate individuals who would while away a Christmas Eve by recounting various stories in the manner of Chaucer's Canterbury Tales. DICKENS Charles.
Christmas Books.
London: Chapman and Hall 1852. Octavo 180 x 118 mm. Contemporary reddish-brown calf titles in gilt to green calf label to spine spine elaborately blocked in gilt frames to covers in gilt and blind board edges rolled in gilt book block edges gilt marbled endpapers green silk page marker. Housed in a custom red cloth chemise and red morocco-backed slipcase. Engraved frontispiece by John Leech text in double columns. Spine professionally refurbished repair to front joint. Auction cataloguing tipped in at front. Crease to gutter of frontispiece. Slight rubbing to extremities boards a little marked and scuffed; a very good copy internally bright. First authorised collected edition presentation copy inscribed by the author on the inserted blank facing frontispiece "Agnes Sarah Lawrence from her affectionate friend Charles Dickens Twenty Second November 1852". The recipient Agnes Sarah Lawrence born c.1835 and a young lady at the time of this inscription was the daughter John Towers Lawrence of Balsall Heath near Birmingham. Dickens corresponded with her father in February that year about bringing a group of amateur players to Birmingham. The following Christmas Dickens returned to Birmingham to give a three-and-a-half-hour reading of A Christmas Carol and The Cricket on the Hearth at the Birmingham Town Hall - the first of his famous readings. Copies for presentation were evidently specially prepared with a heavy text leaf replacing the standard tissue guard. The Gimbel Collection now at Yale includes three presentation copies of this edition each similarly inscribed on an inserted front blank and dated November 1852. Dickens's Christmas books were published here together for the first time with a new preface by Dickens. This copy was later in the library of the great collector Carrie Estelle Doheny 1875-1958 with her red morocco book label to the front pastedown. Doheny's library in Camarillo California "represented one of the rarest book libraries in the United States. Within the collection 4000 volumes were rare books and first editions. Fifteen hundred of the volumes were comprised of autograph letters and important historical and literary manuscripts. Early vellum manuscripts such as bibles gospels commentaries liturgical works and ornamented books revealed the prominence of the collection" Cheung Encyclopedia of Women in the American West p. 97. Dickens Charles
Hard Times. For These Times.
London: Bradbury & Evans 1854. First edition in book form of Dickens' attack on the living conditions of England's mid-19th century industrial cities. Octavo original green cloth blindstamped with gilt titles to the spine including the price 5/- in gilt at the base of the spine. From the library of Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis' stepfather Hugh D. Auchincloss. Auchincloss married Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis' mother Janet Lee Bouvier in 1942. His great grandfather John W. Auchincloss built the 28-room Victorian mansion Hammersmith Farm in 1887 which would later become Jaqueline's childhood home and the site of the reception of her 1953 wedding to John F. Kennedy. With the previous owner Albert Henry Wiggin's card laid in. American banker Albert H. Wiggin amassed a large fine art and book collection in the early to mid 20th century much of which he later donated to the Boston Museum of Fine Art and Boston Public Library. In very good condition with the half-title present which is often lacking. Housed in a custom chemise slipcase. Initially published serially in Household Words between April and August of 1854 Hard Times was published in book form almost immediately following the final serial in 1854. Viewed as a departure from Dickens' previous tales the work presents what was to become an increasingly somber picture of contemporary society in Dickens' works. Critics such as George Bernard Shaw and Thomas Macaulay focused on Dickens' treatment of trade unions and his post-Industrial Revolution pessimism in regards to the divide between capitalist mill owners and undervalued workers during the Victorian era. F. R. Leavis a great admirer of the book included it - but not as a whole - in his Great Tradition of English novels. Bradbury & Evans hardcover

DICKENS Charles.
Dealings with the Firm of Dombey and Son.
London: Bradbury & Evans 1846-8. Original parts 20 numbers bound in 19 monthly parts as issued together with 2 additional plate issues see below. Original green wrappers printed in black the textual numbers with designs by Phiz. Housed in a custom red cloth clamshell case. With 40 etched and lithographic plates by Phiz Hatton and Cleaver noting there is no priority of issue between the etchings and lithographs; plate 35 being the first published example of a "dark plate". Contemporary ownership signature to front covers of parts 1 and 14 and contemporary initials to front cover of part 3 spines discreetly restored some minor foxing to a few plates but far less than usual. An excellent set. First edition in the original monthly parts published from September 1846 to March 1848 here an especially fresh and clean set of the novel "now recognized as one of the greatest of all his works. It is also the first one to have an explicitly contemporary setting" ODNB. The parts are accompanied by Hablot K. Browne's additional "Four Portraits" and "Full-Length Portraits" neat book label to each front wrapper verso. "With the author's sanction 'Phiz' co-operating with Robert Young etched four extra plates for this work. They were fine portraits of Little Paul Edith Florence and Alice and much praise was bestowed on them. Also were made eight additional full length portraits of the other leading characters" Eckel p. 76. The plates were issued to coincide with the novel's completion in 1848 by Chapman and Hall. The two sets issued in wrappers similar to the parts went on sale at one shilling and two shillings respectively and "sold briskly" Paul Schlicke ed. The Oxford Companion to Dickens 2011 p. 61. Also included is an autograph letter signed from the illustrator H. K. Browne regarding these plates. Dated 5 March 1848 Browne informs one Harry Edwards Esq. of Furnival's Inn in Holborn that "a set of eight etchings of full length figures representing some of the remaining principal characters in Dombey will be published in a day or two". All advertisements and slips called for by Hatton and Cleaver are present with the early state of the Dombey and Son Advertiser in part 13 "October 1847" unbroken on p. 1. All but one of the issue points are in their earliest states with "capatin" in part 11 p. 324 and with the earlier state of the errata page two lines rather than eight. For part 14 the word "if" on p. 426 is omitted as stated by Hatton & Cleaver as the "earliest issue" although p. 431 is numbered correctly whereas they call for it to be omitted in "earlier copies". Provenance: the Lawrence Drizen collection of Charles Dickens. Eckel pp. 74-76; Hatton and Cleaver pp. 227-250. London: Bradbury & Evans, hardcover

A dark force from which the real people must escape in order to create another society of their own Dickens had been preparing for this novel all his life and despite the calamities which had helped to provoke it in the first place was even happy while he was writing it It might even be said that Bleak House cured the very malaise which was responsible for its composition" Ackroyd 649-50. "The Dickens cosmos his phantasmagoric London and visionary England emerges in Bleak House with a clarity and pungency that surpasses the rest of his work before and after" Bloom 311.
