‎Pickwick Papers 1837 First Edition Early Issue Points 'Veller' State‎

‎London: Chapman and Hall 1837. Second issue with mixed issue points. Very Good/No Dust Jacket As Issued.
THE CORNERSTONE OF THE DICKENSIAN CANON IN A SIGNIFICANT EARLY STATE.
This 1837 Chapman and Hall first edition represents the birth of Pickwick-mania. A sophisticated copy for the Dickens specialist it features numerous sought-after first-issue textual points-including the famous 'Veller' error on the engraved title page and the 'inbe-licate' typo on page 341. Professionally rebacked with the original spine preserved this volume maintains its Victorian character while offering the structural integrity required for a lifetime of handling.

KEY FEATURES
Issue Priority: Second issue of the first book edition retaining primary first-issue points: 'Veller' sign on title page; five-line footnote on p. 9; 'r u m' mark on p. 10; broken 'e' on p. 17; 'inbe-licate' and 'inscriptino' on p. 341.
Visuals: 43 etched plates by Robert Seymour and H. K. Browne 'Phiz' including the work of R.W. Buss.
Binding: Professionally rebacked in half-leather over complementary marbled boards; original spine laid down. Five raised bands with ornate gilt decorations.
Historical Note: The first novel by Charles Dickens evolving from a series of 'cockney sporting plates' into the most beloved comic masterpiece of the 19th century.
Specs: 8vo; 8.5 inches tall; 609 pages.

CONDITION: Very Good -- Bindings are tight and square with a strong handsome shelf presence. Text block is clean with light even toning and occasional foxing. The frontispiece and engraved title page are heavily age-toned; remaining plates show darkening at the perimeters. Noted ownership marks on the verso of the free front endpage. A sturdy collectible example of a notoriously difficult bibliographic puzzle. HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE --
The Pickwick Papers was the spark that ignited Charles Dickens' global fame. Originally conceived as a mere accompaniment to Robert Seymour's illustrations Dickens quickly took command of the narrative creating a sprawling hilarious and deeply human world that changed literature forever.

Because Pickwick was published in monthly parts the first edition in book form is famously found in a 'mixed' state of issue points. This copy is particularly desirable for retaining the early textual errors that were corrected mid-printing. It represents the frantic successful energy of a young Dickens at the absolute start of his career.

SUBJECTS: Charles Dickens 19th Century Literature Victorian Illustration Pickwick Club English Classics Illustrated Books Literary High-Spots. ‎The Battle of Life‎

‎J M Dent. Hardcover. Good. THERE ARE NO TARIFFS OR CUSTOMS DUTIES ON BOOKS. While "The Battle of Life" is one of Charles Dickens' Christmas Books – his annual release of a story just before Christmas – this one breaks the tradition by not being concerned with Christmas. Rather its subtitle "A Love Story" reveals more of the plot. The setting is an English village that stands on the site of a historic battle. Some characters refer to the battle as a metaphor for the struggles of life hence the title. This novel basically depicts the battles one faces in life and winning them. Grace and Marion are sisters saying goodbye to their childhood friend Alfred who has just come of age after growing up as a ward to th J M Dent hardcover‎

‎The Life and Adventures of MARTIN CHUZZLEWIT 20 parts in 19‎

‎1843. Browne Hablot K. "With the Publisher's Compliments" His Relatives Friends and Enemies. Comprising all his wills and his ways; with an historical record of what he did and what he didn't. Edited by Boz. With Illustrations by "Phiz." London: Chapman & Hall 1843-1844. Original light blue-green pictorial wrappers.

First Edition as originally issued in 20-in-19 monthly serial parts beginning in January 1843 and ending in July 1844. With MARTIN CHUZZLEWIT Dickens reverted to the conventional method of serializing his novels with monthly parts each illustrated with two engraved plates; after NICHOLAS NICKLEBY he had experimented with the idea of a weekly serial under the umbrella-title "Master Humphrey's Clock" illustrated with woodcuts within the text -- in which format THE OLD CURIOSITY SHOP and BARNABY RUDGE had been introduced to the public. This set includes of course all forty H.K. Browne "Phiz" plates -- two each in the first 18 parts then four in the final double-number; all are in quite clean condition though browned in Part XVI and with darkened margins in Parts V and XIV. The vignette title plate supplied in the final part has the curious reading "100 " not as is often claimed an issue point but simply a matter of several steels being used to print the etchings simultaneously. As is frequently the case there are several wrappers that are "supplied" from other copies: the Part XV front wrapper is a carefully-amended Part XVII from another set and three rear wrappers IX X and XIX/XX were similarly transferred -- discernible only by the content of the inside advertisements. As for ads CHUZZLEWIT is one of the more difficult "Dickens in parts" to find complete due to the plethora of inserted advertisements. This set lacks a few leaves from the preliminary "Advertiser"s and maybe a dozen other individual insets; it also includes maybe ten insets NOT called for -- reflecting how haphazard this process of inserting ads was. Included are all three Christmas Carol slips and three of the uncommon E. Moses 32-page booklets of verse. Ask for further detail. The front wrapper of the final XIX/XX part is inkstamped "With the Publisher's Compliments" -- which we have not seen before. Condition is very good XIX/XX wrapper darkened some spines carefully restored minor edge-wear. Hatton & Cleaver pp 183-212. Housed in two chemises within a worn morocco-backed slipcase. unknown‎

Hatton & Cleaver pp.343-370 First edition.

Our Mutual Friend written in 1864–1865 is the last novel completed by Charles Dickens and is one of his most sophisticated works combining savage satire with social analysis. It centers on in the words of critic J Hillis Miller quoting from the character Bella Wilfer in the book "money money money and what money can make of life". Most reviewers in the 1860s continued to praise Dickens' skill as a writer in general but did not review this novel in detail. Some found the plot both too complex and not well laid out. The Times of London found the first few chapters did not draw the reader into the characters. In the 20th century however reviewers began to find much to approve in the later novels of Dickens including Our Mutual Friend. In the late 20th and early 21st centuries some reviewers suggested that Dickens was in fact experimenting with structure and that the characters considered somewhat flat and not recognized by the contemporary reviewers were meant rather to be true representations of the Victorian working class and the key to understanding the structure of the society depicted by Dickens in the novel.

Condition:

Part 13 with light damp-staining to plates occasional spotting but generally clean internally original printed blue wrappers some occasional light repair or retouching to spines part 1 upper cover rather creased and soiled with some chipping to head an foot part 6 with hole to lower wrapper part 19/20 a little soiled with some chipping still a very good set generally preserved in two custom red calf drop-front boxes
Chapman and Hall paperback‎
