‎The Seven Poor Travellers Embellished with illustrations by Arthur Hogg‎

‎New York: James Pott & Co. Fine in Very Good dust jacket. 1908. First Edition Thus. Hardcover. 71 & 1 pages; Publisher's red cloth gilt lettering on spine and front cover with gilt-stamped floral decorations and rules stamped in blind. Pale grey-green floral patterned endpapers top edges gilt. The plain glassine dust jacket shows only minor toning and while it is impossible to prove that it is original it has clearly been wrapped around this copy for a very long time and is consistent with the nature of this small "gift book." Four full page colour tinted illustrations by Arthur Hogg. The title page does not specify a date; the date of 1908 is determined by a brief review and notice in the November 1908 issue of Bertram Waldron Matz's 'The Dickensian: A Magazine for Dickens Lovers and Monthly Record of the Dickens Fellowship". OCLC: 34981349 with a single copy located only -- Schultz Library Sonoma State University California. Inexplicably the University's Library Catalogue suggests a publishing date of "1850-1870." While the printing firm of William Brendon and Son Ltd. in Plymouth England whose tiny slug appears at the bottom of the final page was in business during that time the style and technical nature of Arthur Hogg's tinted plates are all consistent with the issuing date of 1908 suggested in the 'Dickensian." There Matz's brief review p. 287 cites the London co-publisher Sisley Ltd. and his description certainly remains true after a century -- "daintily produced in a miniature size suitable for slipping into an envelope and consequently a good substitute for sending as a Christmas card to Dickensian friends. The illustrations by Arthur Hogg are very pleasing one has a portrait of Dickens drinking the toast 'On earth peace goodwill towards men.' " The plate appears in our book on page 21. Confirmation of the 1908 date of publication appears on page 307 in this same November issue of 'The Dickensian' -- as the first book on the list of "Dickensiana Month by Month." The British Library is the only location of the British issue in OCLC see OCLC Number: 558209404 which also confirms the 1908 date. The "Seven Poor Travellers" text originally appeared in 1854 in the fifth of the nine Christmas numbers of 'Household Words' the weekly periodical Dickens had founded in 1850. This small 1908 volume contains only the parts actually written by Charles Dickens arranged here as three chapers -- Ch. I. In the old city of Rochester -- ch. II. The Story of Richard Doubledick -- ch. III. The Road." . James Pott & Co. hardcover‎

‎Pictures from Italy The Vignette Illustrations on Wood by Samuel Palmer‎

‎London: Published for the author By Bradbury & Evans Whitefriars. Very Good-. 1846. First Edition; First Printing. Hardcover. 4 p.l. 270 & 2 pages; First edition bound in a full deep tan morocco leather art binding four raised bands on the spine decorative stamping in blind on the spine and covers with the initials "MWY" stamped within a decorative diamond-shaped lozenge constructed of decorative tools in blind on the front cover and the date: "1924" stamped in the center of a matching lozenge on the rear cover. An interesting copy certainly a first edition in a handsome albeit worn binding which is more to the neo Georgian than the Victorian taste. There are hand-marbled endapers with paste-downs framed by extra-wide inner dentilles with decorative ruling in blind and round tools in the corners. The marbled endpapers are clearly not commercial but were likely made by the binder who has not signed this interesting binding -- unless the initials at the center of the front cover belong to the binder who may or may not have been the owner of this copy. There are broad and real headbands in alternating shades of white and red; all edges of the leaves are gilt. The binder has retained the original spine from the publisher's cloth binding -- now mounted to a sheet at the rear of the volume. Alas there is some wear now to this binding with cracking along the front outer hinge the board is still soundly attached on the cords a small chip at thecap and a longer chip at the bottom of the spine are now missing exposing a portion of each headband. There is rubbng to the edges of the raised bands the edges of the boards and the corners. But in all this remains an interesting and handsome binding in the craftsman style of the early years of the twentieth century. The copy is an example of the first edition retaining the half title and the ad leaf preceding it as well as the two pages of ads at the rear. Bibliographical understanding of the complex printing history of the issues of the two printings of this 1846 Dickens first edition have evolved since the 1911 publication of Eckel and even Smith and the Gimbel Collection catalogue from Yale seventy years later. The following are the points of issue of this copy: on the title page there is a comma after Wood in the fourth line of text; there is a full-stop tiny period after the printers imprint on p.270; the drop-head decorative title to the first page of text is set entirely in Black Letter; on p.271 in the advertisement for The Cricket on the Hearth the last line reads: Twentieth Edition. In Foolscap 8vo price 5s. Further on page 244 line 8 the e of the first the is printed too heavily and also slightly clogged but not battered by wear. It appears that this letter "e" becomes progressively battered during the printing run of this volume. If a prospective buyer knows of other points we will gladly respond to inquiries. . ‎Children's Stories from Dickens Re-told By His Grand-Daughter and Others Illustrated by: Frances Brundage Harold Copping The Baroness Orezy Willis Grey Edith Scannell & Major Giles; edited by Edric Vredenburg‎

‎London: Raphael Tuck & Sons. Very Good. 1907. Hardcover. 104 pages; Publisher's green cloth pictorial decoration in gilt on the front cover and spine beveled edges to the boards. Date is approximate. Minor wear to the binding with a short trifling tear at the edge of the rear free endpaper some tanning to the first and last leaves transfer from the paper of the endpapers and a black ink rectangle to a small portion of the title page effectively obscuring a single name. The first Tuck-published text with this title was issued about 1890 with 48 pages of letterpress text and 12 chromolithographed illustrations by Frances Brundage. By the time of the DIckens centenary in 1911 the Tuck firm published a more luxurious edition with a slightly altered title page naming the author's grandaughter: "Children's Stories from Dickens Re-told By His Grand-daughter Mary Angela Dickens and Others." London: Raphael Tuck & Sons 1911. Illustrated by Harold Copping. There was a special issue of this new and expanded Tuck edition issued in a numbered edition of 500 Copies signed by Dickens' Grand-Daughters with Dickens' Centenery stamp on upper pastedown -- in gilt- decorated red cloth all edges gilt. The book offerred here appears to have been issued by Tuck in the years between these two editions-- probably about 1907. The text had grown to 104 pages but the Tuck stock of the color plates appears to have been exhausted. So this copy was issued with the alteration to the title page mentioned above on which the first name of the list of illustrators contained in a border formed by a decorative shield was neatly and effectively blacked out. This was Frances Brundage -- the artist responsible for the colored plates not present in this copy. Frances Isabelle Lockwood Brundage 18541937 the daughter of the artist Rembrandt Lockwood -- was a mainstay of the firm of Raphael Tuck & Sons. She was responsible for a number of popular images depicting attractive and endearing children on postcards valentines calendars and other ephemera. As a book illustrator she became known for illustrated children's classics such as the novels of Louisa May Alcott Johanna Spyri and Robert Louis Stevenson and traditional literary collections such as The Arabian Nights and the stories of King Arthur and Robin Hood. In the case of Alcott the remarkable story is that the young artist sold her first professional work a sketch illustrating a poem by Louisa May Alcott to the author. Brundage was her married name -- Frances Lockwood married William Tyson Brundage in 1886 and worked prolifically under that name until her own death at 82 in 1937. Raphael Tuck founded his firm in 1866. The great international boom in postcards made Tuck and his heirs a great success. Many of the Tuck firm's charming chromolithographs were printed in the founders' native Germany. It may be that even before the difficulties created by the first World War it took time to restock color plates particularly those stocked from foreign printers. This issue with wonderful black and white plates and text illustrations by Harold Copping The Baroness Orezy Willis Grey Edith Scannell & Major Giles -- may have been prepared to clear out the remaining stock of sheets before the planned enlarged edition which Tuck was to issue in the centennary year of 1911. Or it may be that only a few copies of this issue were published by necessity without the colored chromolithographs. Either way it makes commercial sense that the firm would delete the name of one of their most popular artists whose fine work was temporarily not included in these few copies issued without her chromolithographs. A scarce Dickens "B" item -- not mentioned in OCLC etc. . Raphael Tuck & Sons hardcover‎

‎Oliver Twist‎

‎Philadelphia: Blanchard and Lea. Very Good. 1851. Hardcover. 212 pages; Contemporary black half leather over marbled boards flat spine "paneled" with pairs of gilt rules title stamped in gilt in the second panel. Sound but somewhat rubbed particularly at the spine ends and lower corners. With a remarkable provenance. There is a circular stamp impressed in blind on the verso of the front free-endpaper: "Thos. C. Acton New York" This is confirmed by a pencil signature at the head of the Introduction p. iii -- "1/2 Blue / T. C. Acton." The owner was Thomas Coxon Acton 1823-1898 -- public servant politician reformer Treasury official banker police commissioner of the New York City Police Department and the first appointed president of its Board of Police Commissioners. In 1863 he and Commissioner John G. Bergen took control of the police force during the New York Draft Riots after police superintendent John A. Kennedy was nearly beaten to death by the mob early on the first day of the riots. Action assumed direction of police and military force against rioters in Manhattan where most of the violence was centered including the shameful burning of the Colored Orphan Asylum at 44th Street and Fifth Avenue. The New York Times whose Manhattan offices were saved from destruction during those tumultuous four days only by Gattling guns wielded by staffers including including Times founder Henry Jarvis Raymond -- summed up Acton's life with this headline for his obituary: "Thomas C. Acton Is Dead; He Expired at His Home in Saybrook Conn. After a Long Illness. Made History In This City He Stopped the Draft Riots Here During the War -- An Abolitionist in Earlier Days and Helped Form the Republican Party". New York Times. 2 May 1898. The phrase "signed by Thomas C. Acton" will raise the heart rate of any collectors of rare American currency notes who might read this description. One of the most sought after notes ever issued by the US Treasury is the so-called "Triple Signature" 1882 US20 Gold Certificate. Some early examples of these notes were countersigned in ink by then-Assistant U.S. Treasurer Thomas C. Acton; perhaps this duty became burdensome since Acton's signature was subsequently engraved on the plates used to print the colorful currency. Hand signed examples by Acton are described as Friedberg 1175; the notes with the printed signature of Thomas C. Acton are designated Friedberg 1175a. For the record the other two printed signatures are those of Blanche K. Bruce as Register of the Treasury and James Gilfillan as Treasurer of the U.S. Either of the Acton notes is rare. Currently only two examples of the Fr. 1175 issue hand signed by Acton are known -- one of the pair sold at auction in 2007 for US546250; twenty seven survivors are recorded of the Fr. 1175a notes signed by Thomas C. Acton in the plate -- one sold in 2007 for a mere US138000. Thomas Acton resigned from the Treasury to found the Bank of New Amsterdam. He occupied many government positions during his later political career as well as becoming a noted social activist and reformer -- along with Marshall B. Blake and Fred A. Conkling Acton was a founder of the Republican Party in New York. Action also was a founding member of the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals and Children. And working against many powerful opposing individuals and groups Acton was instrumental in the founding of the modern New York City Fire Department which replaced the old volunteer firefighter service. some of those private companies had joined with the Draft Riot mobs. In his early years as President of the NYC Board of Police Commissioners Thomas C. Acton had another brush with the history of his times. The NY Times for 6 June 1866 published a short notice of an arrest which Acton was called upon to review. "Yesterday some excitement was created in Canal-street near Broadway by an Eighth Precinct Policeman arresting a lady who had just come out of a milliner's store. The lady wore a long coat or robe and a pair of cloth pants and the guardian of the public peace imagining that there was something wrong about this and that a lady ought not to be allowed to dress as she pleases undertook to arrest her." The arrested lady was Dr. Mary Edward Walker the second woman to graduate from a medical school in the United States who became a Civil War surgeon and perhaps spy. and who had adopted the bold reforms to female attire championed by Elizabeth Libby Miller and Amelia Jenks Bloomer. Dr. Mary Walker refused to tell the patrolman where she lived and he requested that she accompany him back to the Police station where Dr. Walker refused to give her name to the sergeant in charge as she had been detained for no lawful reason. When jail time was pressed as her next alternative she invited the officer to read her name from the gold medal she worn pinned to her coat. This was the Medal of Honor issued by President Johnson for her Civil War service. Mary Walker remains the only woman to whom a United States Medal of Honor has been awarded! -- she reportedly wore hers every day until her death in 1919. Dr. Walker's case came up before Police Commissioner Thomas C. Acton a few days later. The patrolman's attourney suggested that she had been arrested since it was a crime for women to wear men's clothing. Acton to his credit rejected this dubious assertion of law. He is recorded addressing Dr. Walker -- "I consider Madam that you have as good a right to wear that clothing as I have to wear mine and he the police patrolman has no more right to arrest you for it than he has me." Acton then addressed the policeman: "Let her go she can take care of herself. Never arrest her again." For the record Acton's order was not perpetually followed; one biographer counts nine arrests of Mary Edwards Walker over her choice of attire but no one doubts Acton's assertion that "she could take care of herself." Dr. Walker seemed to take pleasure in controversy as a pioneer of women's rights. She also attempted to register to vote run for Congress etc. She was elected president of the National Dress Reform Association in the year she came before Thomas C. Acton - 1866.; Signed by Notable Personage Unrelated . Blanchard and Lea hardcover‎

‎The Personal History of David Copperfield‎

‎Philadelphia: Lea and Blanchard. Very Good-. 1851. Hardcover. viii 327 p. 8 leaves of plates pages; An early American edition of Dickens' David Copperfield bound up from the parts issue for the original owner -- black morocco flat spine - paneled and lettered in gilt over pebbled brown cloth with a decorative pattern stamped in blind. There is a signature in ink on the front paste-down endpaper and pencilled below is the notation "Uttica N.Y." The blank front free endpaper is partly detaching along the upper portion of the gutter -- there is moderate foxing throughout a few stains scattered through along with minor marginal tears to a few leaves. There are stab-holes to the gutter margins throughout from the sewing of the parts issue of these sheets; the clincher is the following pencil inscription on the blank recto of one of the inserted plates: "David Copperfield / / To bind" This is written by the same hand responsible for the inscription on the front paste-down endpaper -- the plate is bound between pp. 176-177 and is titled below the image: "Mr. Micawber delivers some Valedictory Remarks." "David Copperfield" issued in paperbound parts during 1849-1850 appeared from both the firms of Lea & Blanchard of Philadelphia and John Wiley / G. P. Putnam of New York. These are sheets from Lea & Blanchard's serial issue originally 20-parts-in-19 with stab-holes visible. The text is set in double-columns apart from the title page and preliminaries on 327 pages. There were also eight illustrations which the title page attributes to H. K. Browne. Wilkins writes that these plates were "rather poorly engraved on wood by W. F. Gihon after the Phiz etchings" see Wilkins William Glyde: FIRST and EARLY AMERICAN EDITIONS of the WORKS of CHARLES DICKENS. page 28. The frontispiece is signed in the plate "GILBERT & GIHON." A scarce an early American edition with interesting documentation that the presumed first owner had his set bound. Alas as might be expected the parts wrappers were discarded. All 8 plates are present. There is rubbing to the spine along the hinges and to the morocco leather corners some wear to the edges of the cloth and some dulling to the sizing of the cloth to a portion of the rear cover. The plate on the blank recto of which J. H. Edmonds has signed and recorded his notation "To bind" has a 2-inch closed tear to the left margin not quite extending to the edge of the image. See Yale/Beineke Gimbel/Dickens A127; Podeschi J.B. Dickens A127; McGuire Collection Catalogue 43; VanderPoel B224. . Lea and Blanchard hardcover‎

‎Dealings with the Firm of DOMBEY AND SON Wholesale Retail and for Export‎

‎New York: Wiley and Putnam. Very Good-. 1846 1848. First American Edition. Hardcover. 939 pages; The first American edition bound from the original parts for their first owner in two half calf volumes over marbled boards. The flat spines in tan calf are "paneled" with simple pairs of gilt rules and the title is directly stamped in gilt in each second panel. The bindings are rubbed and worn with cracking to the leather at the rear hinge of volume I and a piece of leather is now missing at the top of that spine -- the rear board is holding on its cords. Toning and a few stains scattered throughout the text. Prelims & 939 pp. 34 plates only usually sets of the parts are found with two plates bound with each of the final 18 parts for a total of 36. There are signatures of J. H. Edmonds the Utica New York lawyer in ink dated 1848 on each front paste-down endpaper. In addition there are pencil signatures and notations recording Mr. Edmonds' intention to bind his set; these notes appear on the half title the 1846 title page used in the second volume and on the blank recto of the famous "dark" plate near the end. The inscription on the "dark" plate is the most specific: "1/2 Light / Calf / J. H. Edmonds Esq -- the final two letters have been trimmed off by the binder Edmonds commissioned but Mr. Edmonds did use this form of signature in signing the 1846 title page. For volume I the binder has used the half title "Library of / Choice Reading / rule Dombey and Son" -- and the title page issued with the final part double number 19/20: using the abreviated title "Dombey and Son" and the imprint "New York: / John Wiley / of the Late Firm of "Wiley and Putnam" / 161 Broadway / 1848." This is followed by the dedication leaf the author's two-paragraph preface and two leaves containg Tables of Contents for volume I and also Volume II. The page numbers for the list of Contents for Volume II assume a pagination for that volume set back to page 1 but the pagination of these sheets bound from the parts issue are continuously paginated so that this second volume has pages numbered "487" to "939." The text for this American parts edition was set and printed as soon as the English parts London : Bradbury & Evans 1846-48 arrived and without waiting for the accompanying plates to be engraved. Consequently each of the original parts wrappers none are preserved in this bound set alas bore the note "The illustrations for this number will be given with the next." There were no plates issued with the first part from Wiley and Putnam and two plates in each of the next 18 parts. Evidently a final pair of plates was meant to be available to purchasers by request through the booksellers but these final two plates are now quite rare. The American plates were copies made as engravings on wood by J.W. Orr done from the original designs by Hablot. Knight. Browne known as "Phiz." These are technically remarkable and convey an excellent sense of the originals even with a convincing version of the "dark" plate. Dombey and Son contains the first published example of a so-called "dark plate" created in the Browne original by use of a machine process involving a lining machine and roulettes that tinted the etched plate and heightened its black-and-white contrast. The single dark plate in Dombey and Son is "On the Dark Road" bound here between pp. 865 & 867. To quote from Smith's bibliography of Dickens in cloth about the British original: "The smooth blending of light and shadow on this illustration vividly contrasts it with the other illustrations in the novel and is a fine example of the dark plate process." The version engraved on wood by John William Orr is a brilliant re-creation using a seemingly inappropriate medium -- and is surprizingly effective. It seems appropriate that J. H. Edmonds chose to mark this plate with his name and instructions to the binder making it less likely that this plate would be lost in the transfer to hard covers. The two plates issued with these Wiley and Putnam parts which did not make it into this volume were: "Major Bagstock is delighted to have that opportunity;" and "Mr. Toots Becomes Particular Diogenes Also." There is no evidence of removal; evidently they were lost from this set of parts before their owner had them bound in 1848. Also as usual the final two plates which were announced as available to purchasers of the parts after the conclusion of the issue are not present here. No wrappers have been retained; this too is the usual state of affairs for these bound-from-parts sets. See OCLC Number: 191225906 which states 4 locations but really this should be 3 since the count of 4 includes a couple of spare parts at AAS in addition to their splendid complete set. Podeschi Yale Dickens A104; Wilkins Dickens p. 25. The owner of the parts who commissioned this binding and signed its front free endpapers upon delivery in 1848 -- was John H. Edmonds -- born in Utica New York and a leading lawyer in that city from 1833 until his death in 1881. He was Master in Chancery in the years immediately before the Civil War and was said to have named at least two of Utica's streets: "Howard" and "Leeds." More biographical details can be found in 'Memorial History of Utica N.Y.: From Its Settlement to the Present Time' - edited by Moses Mears Bagg; see page 215. . Wiley and Putnam hardcover‎
