Great Expectations
Sydney Australia: The Shepherd Press 1947. First Thus . Hardcover. Very Good/No Jacket. 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. Lindsay Norman. The black boards are rubbed and the front one is bumped along the edge. Internally the book is immaculate. There are 46 illustrations by Norman Lindsay. Two are pasted in.quite rougly. The first one is opposite the title page the other opposite page One. This one is yellow all the others black and white. An introduction from the book: " The postscript that Dickens tacked on to the end of Great Expectations has not been printed in this edition. It has no relation to the novel's theme and was written after the work was finished because Bulwer Lytton implored Dickens to giver the story a conventional happy ending. The novel is published here as Dickens in the full integrity of his mind intended it to be published. A.L." What makes this copy interesting is that it includes the following hand written dedication : "To John Eaton whose friendship and helpful criticism has through the years encouraged me to carry on with my attempts at Pictorial Portraiture Julian Smith" The signature was illegible but by googling Eaton I found a portrait of one Dr. Julian Smith. There is also an undated note "Dear Ally a keepsake of John & Elsie Eaton which I hope you will enjoy. yours Alfred Donny " And finally A.H. Spencer's neat sticker on the front paste down from "The Hill of Content".

The Shepherd Press hardcover

Dickens, Maimie
My Father as I Recall Him
Westminster: The Roxburghe Press. Hardcover. Good/No Jacket. 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. 128 pages 10 plates. Blue cloth cover with gilt title and two sketches of Dickens playing with Mamie on the front board. The bottom half of the the sketches are covered by a "Mullen's Library" sticker. There is a blue crayon number on front end paper and both hinges are partially exposed. The tissue paper protecting the Dicken's frontispiece is torn at the head. There is a faded "Coroit Free Library" stamp on page 82 and on the penultimate publicity page. The back board is rubbed the title on spine faded. and the pages rough cut in places unevenly. This has no impact on the print. Finally the inner edge from page 112 -to 119 is foxed and pages 120 and 121 have minor ink staining which could even be a printer's fault. A much better than good only copy. No publishing date 1896 "The official biography of Charles Dickens 1812-70 was published in 1872-4 by his close friend and literary executor John Forster and has been reissued in this series. Of the many other memoirs and reminiscences of the great novelist this book by his favourite daughter Mary 1838-96 known as Mamie is perhaps the least familiar. Published in 1896 shortly after her death it gives a loving picture based on her own memories of the person whom she held 'in my heart of hearts as a man apart from all other men as one apart from all other beings'. Mamie who had taken Dickens's side during the separation from his wife and acted effectively as his housekeeper at Gad's Hill had compiled an edition of her father's letters with her aunt Georgina Hogarth and this second act of piety gives an idyllic - perhaps too idyllic - account of daily life with Dickens." Also on the second page of the The Posthumous Papers of the Pickwick Club volume I it is printed: The Best Edition of my Books Is Of Right Inscribed to my Dear Friend John Forster Biographer of Oliver Goldsmith. Many Patient Hours he has Devoted to the Correction of the Proof Sheets of the Original Editions; And in Affectionate Acknowledgement of His Councel Sympathy And Faithful Friendship During My Whole Literary Life.

This is another paragraph

Later Editions: Upon completion of serialization the works were issued as complete novels in one to three volumes with original and in some instances additional illustrations. Starting in 1847 the older novels were reissued in what was called the Cheap Edition these were published in weekly and monthly parts and then as complete novels. Eventually all of Dickens' novels were reissued in the Cheap Edition. The concept of the Cheap Edition was similar to today's practice of reissuing hardback novels as more affordable paperbacks. Other editions published during Dickens lifetime include the Library Edition: a high quality set published without illustrations in 1858/59. This set was reissued between 1861 and 1874 with illustrations and was called the Illustrated Library Edition. In 1867 the Charles Dickens Edition was released. This edition featured new prefaces written by Dickens who also made minor corrections to the text. Chapman and Hall produced the Peoples Edition in 1865-1867 these were inexpensive monthly installments of the novels aimed at travelers in the very popular bookstalls popping up in railway stations all over Britain. Dickens' works were also published in America sometimes simultaneously with the British edition and often with little or no compensation to the author or his publishers due to the lack of an international copyright law. Dickens campaigned unsuccessfully for international copyright during his first American visit in 1842. An English-American copyright law would not be enacted until 1891. Dickens novels continue to be published today in popular series like the Oxford Illustrated Edition which include the original illustrations and the Penguin English Library's paperback edition.

This is another paragraph

About the Author: Charles Dickens was born in 1812 near Portsmouth where his father was a clerk in the navy pay office. The family moved to London in 1823 but their fortunes were severely impaired. Dickens was sent to work in a blacking-warehouse when his father was imprisoned for debt. Both experiences deeply affected the future novelist. In 1833 he began contributing stories to newspapers and magazines and in 1836 started the serial publication of Pickwick Papers. Thereafter Dickens published his major novels over the course of the next twenty years from Nicholas Nickleby to Little Dorrit. He also edited the journals Household Words and All the Year Round. Dickens died in June 1870.
Chapman & Hall, London hardcover

Edwin Drood and reprinted pieces - Dickens biographical edition 1907
Chapman. Hardcover. Good. THERE ARE NO TARIFFS OR CUSTOMS DUTIES ON BOOKS. The Biographical Edition of Charles Dickens' Works 1905-1907 from London publisher Chapman and Hall was a popular collection of his novels often bound in leather or cloth featuring illustrations with Edwin Drood and 'reprinted pieces' usually grouped together in one volume offering an affordable way to own Dickens' complete stories with biographical notes. This is a good example of that volume dating from 1907. One owners inscription. Faint occasional foxing. Red with gilt boards are slightly faded and grubby with a line to the front which reduces it from a VG. Chapman hardcover
