Hughes Langston and Bertolt Brecht
Playbill for GREENWICH PLAYERS PRESENTS A BEVERLY LANDAU STELLA HOLT HENRIETTA STEIN PRODUCTION OF BERTOLT BRECHT'S THE EXCEPTION AND THE RULE . and: LANGSTON HUGHES' THE PRODIGAL SON. caption title
New York: Greenwich Mews Theatre 1965. 4pp. Folded leaflet. Mimeographed typescript printed recto and verso of folded oblong legal sheet. An original playbill associated with a double bill that paired Bentley's translation of Brecht's post-modern play with Hughes' "Gospel songplay" which uses few spoken words utilizing traditional songs or songs by him. The double bill was at its heart a marriage of financial convenience but Hughes admired Brecht and was happy with the pairing. The 21 May 1965 New York TIMES review commented to its readers "We know now that there are many other aspects to the Negro . but if we remember that this is only one side of his nature and potentialities we can share in his gift for rapturously innocent song and dance." The double-bill enjoyed no small success with over 100 performances but Holt's decision to send Hughes's play on a solo tour of Europe without Brecht's play led to some violent disagreement in the company. ITALO ALIGHIERO CHIUSANO
Parole e frasi comuni ambiente amore artista assai attori autore Berliner Ensemble Berlino borghese Brahm Brecht buon casa certo commedia conflitto dell'espressionismo dialogo donna drammatica drammaturgo Erwin Piscator espressionista espressionistica figlio Friedrich Wolf Germania gioco giovane grand guignol grottesco guerra Hacks Handke Hauptmann Helene Weigel Hitler Hofmannsthal invece ispirato Kaiser Kroetz Kurt Weill lavoro lingua tedesca linguaggio lirica lotta madre Max Reinhardt moderno moglie mondo morte musica nazista Neue Sachlichkeit nuovo opere ormai padre personaggi poesia poeta poetica politica povero proprio protagonista psicologica pubblico ragazza rappresentazione realismo realtà regia regista Reinhardt religioso ribalta ricorda rivela rivoluzione romanzo satira scena scenica Schnitzler sente sionismo sociale spettacolo sposa Sternheim stile storia successo suicidio teatrale teatro dell'assurdo teatro epico teatro tedesco testo Theater Thomas Mann tono torna tragedia tratti troppo trova uccide umana uomo vecchio vede versi visione vive Wedekind Wolf
