GLORIOUS PAST OF THE NETHERLANDS AND JAPAN
Japan: Asahi Shimbun 1993. PB. very good wraps softcover. B&W and color illustrations. The history of exchange between Japan and Holland began in 1600 when the De Liefde ran aground at Usuki in what is now Oita Prefecture. When Japan shut itself off from the rest of the world in 1689 Holland became the only country through which Japan could learn Western culture and thus came to represent the West in the eyes of the Japanese people. The purpose of this exhibition is to give today's public a rare glimpse at the past through the display of outstanding oil paintings and priceless old maps that depict the historical background and Dutch customs during the "Golden Age" of the 17th century when trade between Holland and Japan was at its peak. This catalogue of the exhibition is in English and Japanese. 236pp. Asahi Shimbun unknown

Kubrick Stanley director screenwriter; Arthur C. Clarke screenwriter; Frederick I Ordway III scientific consultant; Harry Lang
Archive of production photographs and ephemera from "2001: A Space Odyssey" from the collection of scientific advisor Frederick I. Ordway III
Beverly Hills CA: Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer MGM 1968. Archive including 20 vintage linen-backed production photographs a trade advertisement a film program and a souvenir booklet from the 1968 film "2001: A Space Odyssey." From the collection of NASA scientific consultant Frederick I. Ordway III with images prominently featuring Ordway production designer Harry Lange Arthur C. Clarke Stanley Kubrick and others. One photograph has Ordway's name written on the recto in silver marker. All photographs mounted on matte board as issued. Ordway and Clarke began working together on matters of science fact in 1951 and Clarke personally invited him to be the factual advisor on the film. Kubrick's sprawling science fiction epic traces the evolution of human intelligence under the influence of an unspecified alien force. Along with "Blade Runner" Kubrick's masterpiece forever altered the standard for visual and conceptual sophistication in science fiction and genre films. The pre-production for the film set standards as well as Kubrick hired one of the greatest science fiction authors of the 1960s Arthur C. Clarke to be his screenwriter and hired over 20 scientists like Ordway to consult on every detail of the film. The film's high degree of scientific accuracy coupled with bleeding-edge special effects and minimal use of dialogue make "2001" universally recognized as one of the most influential films ever made. The development of the film was kept strictly under wraps and behind-the-scenes material of any kind is rare. Winner of an Academy Award for Best Special Effects and nominated for three others including Best Director. Set in space shot on location in Scotland England Arizona and Utah. Photographs 8 x 10 inches mounted on 11 x 14 inch matte board. Trade advertisement 9 x 12 inches full color creased. Souvenir booklet 7.25 x 16 inches full color 12 leaves saddle stitched folded. First Spaceship on Venus Silent StarDer Schweigende Stern Original photograph from the 1960 film
Beverly Hills CA: VEB DEFA-Studio fur Spielfilme DDDE / Crown International Pictures 1960. Vintage borderless still photograph from the 1960 East German film "First Spaceship on Venus." Based on the 1951 Stanislaw Lem novel "The Astronauts." DEFA production company rubber stamp to the verso. Featuring an image of Yoko Tani patching up an injury on her shipmate Julius Ongewe.

An intentionally multicultural crew of astronauts travels to Venus to attempt to make contact with Venusians who have left a message on Earth deep in the Gobi desert only to find that the warlike Venusians have all been killed by their own nuclear weapons. The astronauts return to Earth to spread their message of peace and nuclear disarmament an apt message for the Cold War period in which it was created.

Shot on location in East Germany.

Ultimately an agreeably interesting artifact of its time with lengthy diatribes and cheesy set design source novel author Stanislaw Lem heartily disapproved of the film adaptation. The heavily-edited US release cut all references to Hiroshima and swapped the characters of the Russian and American astronauts though the uncut version would be re-released in 2004 under its original name "The Silent Star."

7 x 5.25 inches. Lightly toned else Fine.

Mystery Science Theater 211. VEB DEFA-Studio fur Spielfilme [DDDE] / Crown International Pictures unknown books
