Race Suicide Original poster for the 1938 film
N.p.: Willis Kent Productions 1938. Vintage one sheet poster for the 1938 film.<br /> <br /> An early exploitation film masquerading as an educational exposé of the medical underground about a district attorney who becomes hell-bent on taking down an overzealous doctor who is pressuring young women into procuring illegal abortions. "Race suicide" was an alarmist term used in eugenics rhetoric in the mid-nineteenth and early twentieth centuries and referred to the supposed birth rate differential between "desirable" i.e. white wealthy educated Protestant and "undesirable" religious and racial minorities poor uneducated immigrant criminal populations with the former under threat of becoming extinct as a result of overpopulation by the latter. A disturbing and fascinating document of the intersection of the eugenics and anti-abortion movements of the 1930s. <br /> <br /> 27 x 41 inches. Linen backed and rolled. Near Fine. Cooperative Leadership Summer School Bulletin No. 8

Corner-stapled sheets 5.5 x 8.5 inches printed to recto only in illustrated card wraps. 5 4pp. Faint finger soiling; some offsetting rust from staple to inside wraps and pages; a fresh and clean copy else; about Near Fine. Brochure containing an introductory essay mission statement and schedule for the 1936 sessions of the American Peoples Schools' "Cooperative Leadership Summer School" in the Bronx's Van Cortlandt Park. Modeled after the Danish Folk School principles first seeded by N.F.S. Grundtvig 1783-1872 the American Peoples Schools encouraged a radically different education model than the traditional academic track in the United States. Participants "residents" who boarded with the school and non-residents alike were to learn skill-share dine and participate in recreation together all while working within the community outside of the school itself. <br> <br> As S.A. Mathiasen the school's director writes here: "There are no entrance requirements credits grades or diplomas. The instruction is non-academic and informal. Emphasis is laid on good times recreation of all sorts being considered of as great importance as the classes."<br> <br /> The special seminar course June 27th to August 15th for "leadership in the Consumers' Cooperative movement" is outlined as well as the school's full spring course offerings with a blank application as the last page.<br /> <br> <br /> A fascinating and scarcely documented record of alternative education efforts during the Great Depression.
