Universal City CA: Universal Pictures 1967. Final Script for the 1967 neo-noir film "A Lovely Way to Die" directed by David Lowell Rich written for the screen by A.J. Russell and starring Kirk Douglas and Eli Wallach. An important transitional crime film borrowing the "hard-boiled cop turns in his badge and does things his way" theme that was introduced during the film noir era e.g. "Rogue Cop" "The Big Heat" and transitioning it to the color film era predicting a new kind of film that would come in the early 1970s the most notable example being "Dirty Harry." In this case the cop is Kirk Douglas with Eli Wallach in a typically fascinating role as a disarming but ruthlessly effective private investigator. The titular opening song is delivered by Jackie Wilson and this was the film debut of Ali McGraw. Red titled wrappers stamped FINAL SCREENPLAY on the front wrapper and dated May 2 1967. Title page present noting that the original working title was "The Pineapple Print" with a credit for screenwriter Russell. Holly Parker Turner is married to respected diplomat Clay Anderson Forsythe but they rarely get to see each other leading Holly to pursue other men notably carefree playboy Phil Benton Montalban. Phil soon dies in an accident and Holly panicked flees to Mexico leaving behind her young son. Addicted to drugs and making a living as a prostitute in a cheap hotel in Mexico she meets Dan Sullivan Meredith a criminal who tries to involve Holly in a blackmail scheme. When she discovers her husband Clay is the target she kills Sullivan. Unable to afford a lawyer she is assigned a dedicated young public defender whom she soon recognizes as her son. Hickok meets up with Calamity Jane Dalton only until she is captured by Crazy Knife. Hickok manages to save Calmity in time for the new office in command to arrive General Custer Leslie Nielsen. Based on the 1965 French play. A libidinous American journalist living in Paris has three international stewardesses for girlfriends-each unaware of the others' existence thanks to their opposing flight schedules. The advent of Boeing's new state-of-the-art planes however which facilitate speedier air service and as such less time separating the girls' visits threatens to end his playboy arrangement. The situation is further complicated by the arrival of his longtime friend who quickly assesses the set-up and decides he wants a piece of the action. A clever bedroom farce with notably unusual casting of its two lead actors: Tony Curtis known for his cool unflappable film persona portrayed the slapstick Bernard while the loud comedian Jerry Lewis became the shy introverted Robert. The final film Jerry Lewis would make with Paramount Pictures ending a 17-year association. Set and shot on location in Paris. Clear partial plastic wrapper.
