An original American insert poster 36 x 14 inches for the 1946 film noir "The Walls Came Tumbling Down" based on the novel by Jo Eisinger and directed by Lothar Mendes. Poster with horizontal mailing folds creases scattered soil and stains light edge wear some foxing and brief notations verso. A nice example of a colorful and uncommon poster. A film noir biblio mystery with an intrepid newspaperman working to solve the murder of a priest by following the coded clues found within the dead man's Bible to help find a valuable Leonardo da Vinci painting. Composite album of printed text and original photographs prepared for the Buffalo Pan-American Exposition
Matanzas Cuba 1901. Oblong folio approx. 12" x 16" overall original padded leather with elaborate filigreed silver corner-pieces and central band bearing two engraved shields Cuban and American and a central medallion bearing the name of the school and the Buffalo Exposition a.e.g. silk moiré endpapers; leather a little scuffed the endpapers loosening but in all the binding is very good and sound; internally fine. Containing an autograph leaf signed by the director and 20 instructors and professors 7 printed leaves of text within red borders describing the Institute's curriculum professors natural history museum gymnasium etc. and 37 original photographs on printed mounts with decorative borders depicting professors benefactors alumni classrooms views of buildings both interior and exterior library and museum. The photographs are by C. Ruiz de Castro of Matanzas of whom there seems to be scant information. Photographs measure 7½" x 10" on mounts 11½" x 14". The Institute exists to this day. Started in September 1839 it went through many transformations over the years. By the mid-1860s the school was offering degrees in "Reasoned Arithmetic Algebra Topography Geometry Trigonometry History Physics Line Drawing Bookkeeping Applied Chemistry Geography and Commercial Statistical Geography Industrial Mechanics Natural History Political Economy and in terms of languages: English and French." Shortly thereafter were added "Grammar Latin Greek Sacred History and Religion Psychology Logic and Morals." By 1895 two chairs were added "Linear Drawing and Natural Drawing and it also had a Museum of Natural History with collections of snails and invaluable plants and specimens of the fauna and flora of Cuba." The subject was a touchy one as the MPAA's Production Code Administration had been discouraging studios from working on such a film and there were prolonged negotiations with the Mexican government about approval over the film's release that culminated in a second cut of the film especially for Mexican distribution. Kazan and Steinbeck both ex-communists are said to have used this film to metaphorically express how they felt communism in the Soviet Union had gone off the rails. <br/><br/>The film won Anthony Quinn an Academy Award for Best Actor in a Supporting Role and it was nominated for four others. It also won Best Actor at Cannes and was nominated for the Grand Prize. <br/><br/>Set in early twentieth century Mexico shot at the Twentieth Century-Fox back lot with location shooting along the Rio Grande and across the American Southwest. <br/><br/>8 x 10 inches. Xerographically reproduced Fox file copy likely produced by the studio for its files in the late 1960s or a bit later. <br/><br/>Kazan's romanticized semi-fictional account of Zapata in his prime this sweeping early Brando film glorifies the revolutionary's noble intentions and largely overlooks the rest.
