8vo., on India paper, with 9 coloured engraved maps on 6 and a double-page chronological chart; attractively bound in publisher's black roan portfolio with drop sides all round, covers framed and blocked in blind and blocked and lettered in gilt, back with five raised bands ruled in blind, second compartment lettered in gilt 'Bagster's Teacher's Bible', gilt edges, black endpapers, portfolio mildly scuffed and rubbed at extremities else a remarkably well-preserved, bright, clean copy. Bagster's Teacher's Bible is a facsimile reprint, with larger types, of the English Version of Bagster's Polyglot Bible first published in 1817 and which made Bagster's name. It corresponds page for page, and line for line, with the two well-known Pocket Editions. The text is that of the Authorized Version, printed in double column with the references in a third central column in Bagster style. In addition to the Old and New Testaments, this edition contains Cruden's Concordance, Chronology, Tables of Weights & Measures, Tabular Harmony, Comparative View of Quotations, and a set of maps engraved and coloured expressly for this edition. A particular feature is the set of Four Thousand Short Scripture Question with Answers, designed expressly for the use of teachers. The Teacher's Bible is an edition uncommon at best, and scarce indeed in this condition with wholly unrestored portfolio in unusually sound state. See Darlow & Moule 1081.

Old calf rebacked with portions of original backstrip laid down remnants of gilt borders on boards 20th century endsheets and inserted sectional dividing blanks. Maps illustrations engraved general title to Bible. Entirety of all three works ruled in red. Genealogies: map has repairs to edges and is remargined at gutter no loss to image small spot to margin and a bit of soiling. Bible: engraved title and full-page woodcut of the Garden of Eden trimmed close and shaved at fore-margin normal page numbering errors in gathering 3K occasional modest soiling and some generally minor spotting. a few small marginal repairs one a tear in lower edge of 2Z3 across several lines without loss minute worm track in inner gutter of 2M-T; Psalms: repaired tear in upper margin of A3 touching a few letters K1-7 a bit limp and frayed with repairs to two lower blank forecorners; K8 terminal blank wanting; some moderate scattered soiling minute wormhole in black fore-margin of leaves G8 to end some rust satins to gutter/inner margins of gatherings G and H resulting in a few small holds; bookseller's annotations on pastedowns in ink !!! describing it an "exceptionally fine volume" and giving partially erroneous bibliographic citations. Still generally a good volume. 2344double-spread map; 4362 i.e. 366 361-444 2 3- 135 7 leaves; 1114 i.e. 1137pp. 1 vols. Small folio. A characteristic gathering of the three texts the Bible being the Geneva-Tonson-Junius version in an edition that is a very close reprint of Barker's 1607 edition. The general engraved title is undated and the sectional full title-page for the NT is dated 1611 but the printer's colophon at the end is dated 1612. The text of the Apocrypha is included as a part of the contiguous whole. The edition of the Genealogies which is here bound prior to the Bible is one of the several folio printings attributed to Beale that are partially sorted as to minute variants in STC and ESTC; however this example does not conform to the variants in ESTC in regard to the line-breaks in the side note on A1V. The present edition of the Sternhold and Hopkins Psalms includes some music settings. This is among the last folio London printings of the Geneva text the standard text of 16th century Protestantism and the text referenced by Shakespeare Donne Bunyan et al. Ink inscriptions on two front free endpapers naming "Edmund James Gore" & his London addresses. The continental binding on this small format Authorized version MAY suggest that it might be a pirated edition of the English Bible pirated in Amsterdam. Both texts are printed in two columns and are red ruled throughout. The New Testament ends on S2 verso and is Herbert 683 ESTC R170626. The calf binding is mottled with iron salts. The boards are panelled with a two line roll and another narrow roll with the fittings for clasps with the hinge to the lower board in the continental manner. The arms of the clasps are lacking. The spine has raised bands with simple gilt tooling. The edges are trimmed close denoting a second binding and stained black. The endpapers are characteristic Herrenhut paste papers in a prussian blue combed design. Leaf B9 repaired at the foot with some loss of text. Inscribed on a blank before the title page 'Husey Gould the gift of Mr.Gould Febry. ye 9 1759.' Cambridge: Thomas Buck and Roger Daniel 1638. . Your chance to own a complete Bible apart from one leaf printed only 27 years after the King James Version first came out - a huge one 15 inches tall similar to the pictures you may have seen of original 1611 editions. Hinges and extremities have wear and tear and clasps are missing. Early and late pages have furrows perhaps suggesting moisture issues long ago. A few small holes to pages appear to have been caused by rust and therefore presumably contamination of the paper by specks of ferrous metal. There are no extra materials apart from the translators' addresses to King James and to the reader at the front and the Apocrypha located between the Old and New Testaments. No endpapers - inside of front cover has old stamps of Thomas Garbutt Linen and Woollen Draper Barnard Castle likely from 100 or more years ago. The date of 1638 which is printed on the NT title page has also been added in an old but plain style in black pen at the bottom of the illustrated main title page which is a bit worn and grubby. Page 611-612 middle of Hosea is missing seeming at first glance not to have been present but in fact some tiny fragments do appear at the spine. The last page of text is dilapidated but the text of it seems near complete. Some old repairs have been made to borders of pages by pasting on paper which mostly seems of a similar nature to the original and in general when doing this care seems to have been taken not to obscure the text. The exterior is not elaborate but has a 3 inch long rhombus shaped area of gilt decoration to the middle of each of the two boards; there is no lettering or decoration to the spine. There are pictorial drop initials at the beginning of each book of the Bible and Apocrypha. This specific printing is said to have remained the standard text until the printing of Dr Paris' Cambridge edition of 1762. Leather. Average. Folio - over 12" - 15" tall. The Bible opens with a frontispiece engraved by Charles Grignion after Francis Hayman; the Apocrypha are present in this copy and the New Testament has a separate title-page dated 1776. The BCP is bound with Companion to the Altar "Note This Book is bound up with the Common-Prayers of several sorts printed by the University of Cambridge" as per the title-page; Sternhold & Hopkins bring up the rear.<br>Â Â Â Â Bindings: Contemporary mottled green morocco covers framed in Greek key roll and dentelles composed of urn and flower motifs surrounding central JHS medallions with red morocco inlays and gilt-tooled flames; spines with gilt-tooled compartment decorations Bible spine with gilt-stamped red leather title-label. While the covers of the two volumes are strongly similar overall and "read" as => identical on first glance the details of the design vary slightly between the Bible and the BCP as the size disparity and possibly the time gap between the publication dates necessitated the use of different tools. The spine designs differ more notably but still most companionably with the Bible's spine decorations being built up with foliate and floral motifs and the BCP's with suns and stars. => To engage in minute comparison of these bindings' detail is an entrancing exercise.<br>Â Â Â Â Provenance: Front free endpaper of Bible used for family record: Francis James Barwell de Sandol Roy born in 1793 and died in 1813 "Quel angoisse!"; Henri Guillaume de Sandol Roy born in 1797; and a list of grandchildren: François Sophie Anna and Alfred. The title-page inscription confirms that this set was owned by Sophie Bridget Barwell de Sandol Roy 17691850 daughter of William Barwell a director of the East India Company; her brother Richard became a famously wealthy and scandalous nabob. Dubbed "la belle Anglaise" following her arrival in Neuchâtel Sophie made a great splash in Swiss society and received a proposal from Colonel François Isaac de Sandol Roy sometimes given as Sandol-Roy a proposal which she at first rejected until he subsequently saved her from the guillotine in revolutionary Paris! The plates include scenes of Adam and Eve in paradise frontispiece the Egyptian midwives drowning the Hebrews' infant sons Judas Maccabaeus slaying Apolloninus and Judas betraying Christ with a kiss; the maps show the presumed historical setting of the Garden of Eden and the Holy Land. I: lacking frontis. 2 ff. 915 1 blank pp. II: lacking frontis. 2 ff. 804 1 blank pp. 1 blank f. <br><br>Handsomely and plainly printed in two columns of large type without notes this two-volume Bible is as remarkable for the becoming simplicity of its layout as it is for its handsome binding of red leather gilt.<br>Â Â Â Â Binding: Boston binding Straight-grained red morocco amply gilt in the Regency style: Front corners with a wide gilt-stamped foliate frame enclosing a narrow blind-ruled frame. Spine with raised bands a broad foliate gilt roll on each band second and fourth compartments gilt-lettered within rest with gilt frames. Gilt inner dentelles and board edges. Red and white silk head bands. Marbled endpapers in a stone pattern. All edges gilt.<br>Â Â Â Â Provenance: Presentation inscription on front fly-leaves: Preston S. and Francis M. I only and a large paper copy with a frontispiece for each volume. A few closed tears into text without loss; some pages especially towards the end of vol. I shallowly chipped without loss of impression; light foxing throughout with occasional darker browning or staining. Inked ownership inscription on the recto of the first fly-leaf of each volume. Hinkley 1923. 8vo. 14 vols. 70 plts. <br><br>This handsome and much-sought edition of the King James Bible was printed at the Merrymount Press and limited to 2574 sets: 1000 on wove paper 1000 on laid paper 488 on handmade paper and 86 on Japan paper. This set is #233 printed on handmade paper and contains 70 fine plates usually 5 per volume and mostly photogravures after paintings. The edition was designed for smooth reading and the text is set in ordinary paragraphs without chapter and verse numbers.<br>Â Â Â Â This work has a complicated and as yet not fully explained printing history. It was probably first printed in 1904 with sheets reissued or reprinted at various times in the subsequent two decades. Even the name of the publisher on the title-page varies; "The Grolier Society" sometimes appears in place of Hinkley.<br>Â Â Â Â Binding: Publisher's quarter tan pigskin spine leather over deeply grained polished bare wooden boards with bevelled edges on the three outer sides in the style of incunable and 16th-century books. Raised bands on spines; spine panels tooled and lettered in blind. Unusual and attractive. <br>Â Â Â Â <br>Â Â Â Â Smith 209; Hills 2155 for the 1904 edition and explanation of reissues. Bound as above with top edge gilt other edges uncut. Spines darkened and some chipped. One cover detached and present. Much enjoyment. R. H. Hinkley hardcover books
