‎San Francisco CA: the artist 1981. Handbill 21.5 x 13.5 cm. one leaf printed recto only. Illustrated. Date from ink stamp on verso "1981". Handbill for a performance perhaps the first in which Lesbian entertainer Carol Roberts "Comes out as a Foodsexual". A photographic image of Roberts shows her engaging a large bag of M&Ms. Roberts operated at the nexus of comedian and performance artist. Records of her performances are clustered in the early 1980s at Bay Area clubs including the Other Café the Boarding House and Fanny's Cabaret. In a February 1982 issue of the S.F. Examiner Bill Mandel reviews a show in which Roberts shared the bill with three other women including Paula Poundstone. Mandel wrote "Roberts also admitted to being a foodsexual. She offered tips on spotting habits with the foodsexual community. If the fork is worn protruding from the left rear pocket the person is into feeding. A fork in the right pocket means the wearer is into feeding. She ran through the erotic names of some candy bars particularly favored by the practicing foodsexual: Big Hunky Chunky Looking for Mr. Goodbar Butterfingers." Long shows how comedy expressed the Greek feeling of superiority over the barbarians, how it dealt with the so-called barbarian-Hellene antithesis. The result is a contribution to the study of ancient Greek comedy—both the comedy itself and the beliefs, the prejudices, the limitations, and the variety in the society from which the plays emerged. The comedians’ responses to the barbarians ranged from idealization to neutrality to raw racism. Although contemptuous of barbarians, the Hellenes could not keep elements of foreign culture from entering their own. Long’s major contention is that the Greek reaction to Oriental and other foreign influence can be seen in the treat­ment of barbarians in Greek comedy. ; 240 pages‎

‎'London July 4 1879 / Upper Montagu st. W'. See his entry in Encyclopaedia Britannica and Taylor's in the Oxford DNB. 1p 12mo. In good condition lightly aged and folded once. In worn envelope with Penny Red stamp and postmark and slight loss around flap. The envelope was no doubt retained because it was addressed by Delaunay to 'Sir Tom Taylor / Lavender Sweet sic / Wandsworth'. A neatly laid written and laid out communication addressed to ‘Cher Monsieur Taylor’ and signed ‘Yours truly / L Delaunay / de la Comedie française’. He regrets that he and his wife cannot accept Taylor’s ‘très cordiale invitation’ as they accepted a similar one ten days before from ‘Mr. & Mrs William Spottiswode’ sic.
