Beckett's first novel written in English and originally published in 1938. This French translation appeared 9 years later under the Bordas imprint. At the end of 1953 Les Éditions de Minuit acquired some 2750 unsold copies from Bordas and in early 1954 they reissued them under their own wrappers. <br /> Roslyn Targ 1925-2017 was Beckett's longtime literary agent. Her husband William Targ 1907-1999 was editor in chief at World Publishing and then Putnam's before founding his own imprint Targ Editions; he was also a noted bibliophile and Beckett collector. The Targs enjoyed a friendly relationship with Beckett and paid him visits during their trips to Paris with Bill Targ introducing Beckett to Saul Bellow on one ocassion. A fine association. Text printed at The Shagbark Press on paper made by Cartiere Enrico Magnani. The etchings were printed on arches at Wingate Studio and Renaissance Press and book design by Benjamin Shiff. Company is about old age about childhood young love and parental memories. Ultimately the narrator realizes that all the voices are his own invention created to keep him company. Ill Seen Ill Said concerns an old woman living in a ghostly cabin who can sometimes be seen sometimes not. The God of Genesis is very much involved. Worstword Ho is Beckett's modern equivalent of The Tempest. He literally becomes Prospero--or God-- bringing life into being. Nohow On-- the title for the trilogy- is paradoxical. "Nohow" is the situation all of us confront every day. "On" suggests hope. In any event we must go "on." Robert Ryman's six aquatints firmly anchored in Beckett's text invite the viewer to find something profound in seeming nothingness. By being able to discern anything even the most delicate "white space next" to another we are able to discover something."
