1886 HANDWRITTEN MANUSCRIPT LETTER REGARDING THE FAMED ARCHITECT'S SPEECH ON LUNACY
London England 1886. On offer ALS Edmund Beckett 1st Baron Grimthorpe 1816-1905 known previously as Sir Edmund Beckett 5th Baronet and Edmund Beckett Denison. He was a lawyer amateur horologist and architect. In 1851 he designed the mechanism for the clock of the Palace of Westminster responsible for the chimes of Big Ben. He was also responsible for rebuilding the west front roof and transept windows of St Albans Cathedral at his own expense. Although the building had been in need of repair popular opinion at the time held that he had changed the cathedral's character even inspiring the creation and temporary popularity of the verb "to grimthorpe" meaning to carry out unsympathetic restorations of ancient buildings. Part of Beckett's additions included statues of the four evangelists around the western door; the statue of St Matthew has Beckett's face. He later turned his attentions to St Peter's and then to St Michael's Church both in the same city. In 1868 he worked with W H Crossland to design St Chad's Church Far Headingley in Leeds. ALS. 2-1/3 pages 1886. "I am glad my lunacy speech gave satisfaction to those who could understand it. When I went into the House yesterday I was told the case was hopeless but it evidently is not." This work details construction relating to houses and churches as well as the principles of construction. With chapters regarding the Great Pyramid and domes.Written by Edmund Beckett 1816-1905 a horologist and architect. He also wrote the works 'A Rudimentary Treatise on Clocks and Watches and Bells' and 'Astronomy Without Mathematics'.Illustrated. In the publisher's original full cloth binding. Externally very smart minor bumping to the head and tail of the spine resulting in a little loss to the cloth; a large crack running down the spine otherwise minor wear. Ownership bookplate to the front pastedown and inscription to the endpaper. Internally generally firmly bound pages are bright and clean bar the occasional spot to the publisher's advertisements. The horologist who designed the Big Ben clock: Sir Edmund Beckett Denison latterly Lord Grimthorpe. Three Autograph Letters Signed to Edward Hayes Plumptre regarding the business of Westminster girls’ school Queen’s College.
ONE: 14 January 1856; Queen’s College. TWO: ‘Valentines Day’ 14 February 1870; 33 Queen Anne Street W. London THREE: 3 April 1870; Doncaster. The third of these letters in particular gives a good indication of his Yorkshire bluntness his entry in the Oxford DNB describes him as ‘a man of arrogance and bile . capable of generosity strong friendships and kindness towards people in need of help’. The three items are in good condition lightly aged; the third with slight wear along one edge. All three are signed ‘E B Denison’ and the second and third are addressed to ‘My dear Plumptre’. ONE 14 January 1856: 3pp 4to. This letter concerns Queen’s College the girls’ school founded in 1848 by Denison’s relation Frederick Denison Maurice of which Plumptre would be Head 1875-1879. Subscribed ‘Chairman of the meeting of the Council this day’ and addressed ‘To the Chairman of the Committee of Education’. Begins: ‘Mr Nicolay is anxious that the Committee of Education should be informed of the opinion of the Council respecting the taking of Boarders in the new house No 68 Harley St.’. He reports the resolutions of the council who ‘think that the matter is now so far advanced that we may ask the Committee to come to a decision on the subject of taking boarders . We beg also to suggest that it is desirable that the meeting or meetings on this subject should be attended by as many of the Professors as possible as it is a matter seriously affecting their pecuniary interests’. TWO ‘Valentines day’ 1870: 2pp 16mo. ‘By this time you have possibly got my letter of yesterday which I took to the College expecting to see you & not observing that it was dated on Monday.’ After a brief discussion of College business he gives this in a postscript: ‘Crassweller came this morning wanted us to guarantee him in an action which a livery stable man is bringing against him for what he calls a nuisance in carrying off the rubbish through the Mews which Spooner referred to in his letter to you. Of course I did no such thing. It may or may not turn out that we shall have to do nothing but Crassweller will settle very differently for himself & yours.’ THREE 3 April 1870: 2pp 12mo. ‘Spooner’s account’ of Crassweller is ‘not very satisfactory’ but he has signed the cheque to him. ‘I have told Bailey that his continued employment is a disgrace to the Portland Estate after all that Bailey knows of him - & the Duke i.e. the Duke of Portland extensive London landowner too - By allmeans sic try the Duke again if you think it will do any good. I have a strong persuasion that in spite of Spooner we ought to have tried to get the building condemned by the M. Board & made it a landlord’s job’. He continues: ‘I have never heard of a 60 year marriage continuans before my father & mother’s. I shall not be in London on Wednesday for more than sleeping at any rate especially as our kitchen boiler is bust.’ Postscript refers to ‘Bickley liberality towards Q. C.’ and Lady Stanley. See Beckett’s entry in the History of Parliament according to which he held the position of Under-Secretary of State for Home Affairs from 1806 to 1817. 1p foolscap 8vo. In fair condition lightly aged and creased at the foot with strip of discoloration at the head. Folded twice into a packet. Addressed to ‘Colonel Torrens’. Torrens was a British Army officer economist editor of the Globe newspaper and an influential figure in the colonization of Australia. Reads: ‘Sir / Your Letter to Mr Peel the future Tory prime minister Sir Robert Peel then Under-Secretary of State for War and the Colonies of the 24th. Instant having been referred to this Office and laid before Mr Secretary Ryder i.e. Home Secretary Richard Ryder I am directed to acquaint you that as Mr Ryder has in no instance granted a Cartel Passage to aliens going to France since the Regulation was established confining them to certain Cases connected with the Public Service He is induced to hope that H: R: H The Commander in Chief Prince Frederick Duke of York will wave his recommendation in favor of Mr Sonnenberg / I am &c / J Beckett’. ‘Whitehall 26th. I finally had to order a second copy when our first one fell apart after 20 years of constant use. We kept it in the bathroom and every family member 7 of us would pick it up and read the marvelous descriptions and revelations that Sister Wendy gave about each painting while we were doing our business. It was one of the few ways we had to introduce art and culture to our 5 kids without having them think we were trying to ram it down their throats. They loved the book as much as we did even though they wouldn't admit it then. Our adult daughter recently asked if I could get a new copy for her family because she missed it so much. I did and a new one for me too.</p></li><li><p>Don't be ashamed to have Sister Wendy on your coffee table. And read the book don't just look at the pictures. I've got so many art books that I've never really read through but this one is just so-o-o interesting. It has the strength of giving a sound historical context to the art. It also is nowhere near as dumbed down as you think it's going to be.</p></li><li><p>Bought following memories of watching Sister Wendy on TV and found as enlightening as she is herself. The pictures are of such a size that you can readily immerse into them and the text is light but informative. Especially good as it adds insight into what we see by also explaining what we don't see i.e Greeks tendency to paint onto wood. Highly recommended as an introduction into art or simply as a quick capture snapshot of what has been created.</p></li></ul><p>Wendy Mary Beckett 25 February 1930 – 26 December 2018 better known as Sister Wendy was a British religious sister and art historian who became known internationally during the 1990s when she presented a series of BBC television documentaries on the history of art. Her programmes such as Sister Wendy's Odyssey and Sister Wendy's Grand Tour often drew a 25 percent share of the British viewing audience. In 1997 she made her debut on US public television with The New York Times describing her as "a sometime hermit who is fast on her way to becoming the most unlikely and famous art critic in the history of television."</p><p>Beckett spent many years translating Medieval Latin scripts before deciding in 1980 to pursue art. Her first book Contemporary Women Artists was published in 1988. Sister Wendy Contemplates Saint Paul in Art was published in 2008 to celebrate the Year of Saint Paul. In May 2009 Encounters with God: In Quest of the Ancient Icons of Mary was published which follows Beckett's pilgrimage to see the earliest icons of Mary which had survived the Byzantine Iconoclasm. Beckett continued writing about her interest in icons in the second volume of her Sister Wendy Contemplates series published in July 2011. This book entitled The Iconic Jesus takes the reader through scenes from the New Testament accompanied by Beckett's reflections. Her next book published in 2011 The Christ Journey consists of her commentaries on the artwork of Greg Tricker.</p><p>Beckett required medical treatment as an outpatient at a local hospital. The television chef Delia Smith a Roman Catholic convert volunteered to drive her there each week. Smith also drove her around the country to meet the artists when Beckett was writing her book about contemporary women artists. Through this the two became good friends.</p><p>Having overheard her commentary while attending an art exhibit a film crew asked to videotape her. This brought her to the attention of a BBC producer and led in 1992 to the debut Sister Wendy's Odyssey.</p><p>Beckett was often effusively verbal in her descriptions of the human body in paintings both male and female. In view of her religious state this came as a surprise to some viewers. She insisted however on describing the depiction of the human anatomy in art when it was called for stating that "God did not make a mistake when He created the human body so I am not making a mistake by describing it."</p> Dorling Kindersley. hardcover
