A large paper copy bound in polished mottled calf with matching flyleaves gilt-ruled around the edges and inner dentelles gilt decorated spine. All edges gilt. Published for the Everyman's Library Children's Classics series. In the publisher's original cloth binding decorated with gilt and a front board illustration. Presented here with a cloth-backed clamshell with spine label. Comprising Sir Edward Marsh's translation of Fontaine and Sir Roger L'Estrange's translation of Aesop. Both illustrated with fifteen colour plates and vignettes to Fontaine's fables and numerous full page drawings to Aesop's. Clamshell provided by Eric Sweet a keen collector of private press and fables. He studied at the Brighton College of Art before moving to London to work as a lettering artist and typographer for advertising agencies later becoming the head of Birmingham School of Printing. Sweet's bindings are unique and striking reflecting the topics of the volumes in distinctive style. In the publisher's original cloth binding with illustrations pasted to the front boards. Held together with a cloth-backed clamshell. Externally lovely with only a residue mark left by label to the rear board of 'Aesop'. Clamshell is damp stained to the top edge. This volume contains the frontispiece engraved vignettes and initials missing Ogilby portrait and has all eighty-one full-paged plates in fabulous condition. Light yellowing/browning of initial few pages as regular. Volume II--Second Edition Aesopics or a Second Collection of Fables illustrated with sixty-eight full-paged plates in early issue before captions were added. Pages are remarkably clean without any browning. Large folio volumes both illustrated throughout; Wenceslaus Hollar 1607-1677 engraved eighty-eight of the illustrations for these works the others were executed by Dirck Stoop c. 1610-1686 and Francis Barlow c. 1626-1704.
