RACKHAM Arthur. AESOP.
Aesop's Fables.
London: William Heinemann 1912. Original white cloth with gilt titles to the front board and spine. All 13 mounted colour plates and their tissue guards are present as called for and in fine condition. With a further 53 black and white illustrations throughout the text. Spine toned covers professionally cleaned with some faint soiling. A very good copy. First Rackham edition signed limited issue and first edition of this translation; number 9 of 1450 copies signed by Arthur Rackham. "The peculiar secret of Rackham's success in seizing upon the essence of the human and portraying it in animal form which is after all the basic device of the morality is unwittingly touched upon in Chesterton's delightful introduction to the 1912 edition of Aesop's Fables: 'There can be no good fable with human beings in it. There can be no good fairy tale without them.' Rackham's genius is such that it bridges the two and carries the didactic fable into the realm of fairy story and lends to the imaginative world of fairies a tangible and convincing reality" Fred Gettings Arthur Rackham 1976 pp. 83-84. Samuel CROXALL trans.. AESOP
Fables of Aesop and Others. Newly done into English by Samuel Croxall with an Application to each Fable. Illustrated with Cutts. First Croxall edition REMARKABLY BRIGHT CRISP COPY OF THE FIRST CROXALL AESOP
Printed for J. Tonson and J. Watts 1722. 8vo. First Edition thus with engraved frontispiece title in red and black and 196 fine woodcuts in the text neat contemporary inscription on blank preliminary; attractively bound in eighteenth century full speckled calf boards with gilt frame border back with raised bands second compartment with red leather label lettered and ruled in gilt all other compartments ruled in gilt red sprinkled edges expertly rebacked with old backstrip laid down a remarkably bright crisp copy. FIRST EDITION OF THIS SELECTION AND TRANSLATION BY SAMUEL CROXALL. Croxall compiled his translation to rival the well-known version of Roger L'Estrange first published 1692 many times reprinted and prior to this edition the well-nigh 'standard' text. Croxall accuses his predecessor of Jacobite tendencies but has himself not resisted the temptation to incorporate political overtones into what is primarily a children's book. The present selection includes no fewer than 196 fables each illustrated by a charming and well-executed woodcut several of which were later used as models by Bewick. The frontispiece of Aesop orating is after Vandergucht. An immediate and popular success Croxall's edition was itself many times reissued remaining in print until well into the latter half of the nineteenth century and today probably his best-remembered work. AN EXCELLENT COPY OF AN IMPORTANT EDITION AND EXTREMELY SCARCE ESPECIALLY IN THIS CONDITION. Printed for J. Tonson and J. Watts, hardcover
