In 1946 Lagerstrom Was Recruited By Hans Liepmann To The Guggenheim Aeronautical Laboratory At Caltech.5 He Was Later Promoted To Professor Of Aeronautics In 1952 And Professor Of Applied Mathematics In 1967 Having Departed Only Briefly To The University Of Paris In 1960-1961 As Visiting Professor On A Guggenheim Fellowship. His Book "Laminar Flow Theory" Initially Published In 1964 In The Theory Of Laminar Flows Edited By F.K.Moore Is Still Considered As The Standard Textbook For Fluid Mechanics. Anatol Roshko 1923-2017 Was The Theodore Von Kármán Professor Of Aeronautics Emeritus At The California Institute Of Technology Pasadena Ca. Roshko Is Known For His Contributions To Gas Dynamics. He Along With H. W. Liepmann Is The Co-Author Of The Widely Used Textbook "Elements Of Gasdynamics". He Has Made Research Contributions To Problems Of Separated Flow; Bluff-Body Aerodynamics; Structure Of Turbulent Shear Flow. He Completed His Undergraduate Education At The University Of Alberta With A B.Sc. Degree In Engineering Physics In 1945 Received The M.Sc. Degree From Caltech In 1947 And The Ph.D. In 1952. Most Of His Academic Career Has Been At Caltech Where He Was The Theodore Von Karman Professor Of Aeronautics Emeritus At The Time Of His Death. He Was Also A Member Of The National Academy Of Engineering; A Fellow Of The American Institute Of Aeronautics And Astronautics The American Physical Society The American Academy Of Arts And Sciences And An Honorary Fellow Of The Indian Academy Of Sciences. Roshko Received Fluid Dynamics Prize By The American Physical Society Aps In 1987. He Was Also Awarded The Timoshenko Medal In 1999. Number one hundred and seventy-two of two hundred and twenty-five copies bound thus by the Gregynog Press bindery another twenty-five copies were specially bound with their name to foot of lower endpaper. Actually published in April 1932 in Bembo type on Barcham Green hand-made paper with thirty-seven wood engravings by Agnes Miller Parker and wood engraved initials by William MacCance. Pages bright and clean with some bookseller pencil and ink markings on front and back flyleaves. Vellum a little thumbed but in excellent condition for a book of its age.<br /> <br /> STCN 334560683. A VERY RARE and EARLY EDITION of Aesop translated into French by Jean-Baptiste Morvan de Bellegarde 1649 -1734 a Jesuit priest author of works on ethics religion and education and accompanied by his discussion of the moral of each fable and four lines of verse. The fables are accompanied by a lively depiction of the story by the Berlin copper-plate engraver Georg Paul Busch 1682 - 1759. In Vol. 1 the 78 fables are preceded by "La Vie d'Esope" pp. 1-93 written by the Byzantine Greek monk and scholar Maximus Planudes c. 1260 - c. 1305. Vol. 2 contains fables 79-117 as well as French prose translations of further fables without illustrations: 18 numbered fables by the Renaissance Italian humanist poet and scholar Francesco Filelfo or Philelphus 139-1481 translated from the Latin verse; 37 fables based on Aesop by Gabrias and Avienus translated from the Latin verse; two longer fables: the "Battle of the cats and the rats" and the "Battle of the rats and the frogs"; five Aesop "tales" taken from Plato's dialogue Protagoras including one titled "De l'Origine de l'Amour"; six numbered "poetical fables" with Olympian Gods as protagonists; and finally three more tales the first from Herodotus and the last from Gerbellius. Numerous woodcut vignette illustrations in the text plus head and tail pieces the first vignette to the La Vie D'Esope page shows Aesop dancing between apes playing stringed instruments and in the background his murder is depicted. There is no frontispiece plate in this copy but otherwise complete. Later Victorian full mottled sheep binding with burgundy title label to the spine; binding very good with a little gentle wear and rubbing. Contents clean and tight; a little edge-wear to the title page which has a small old paper repair to the base a few pages with short edge-tears. A very good copy of the scarce first edition. Two volumes are in the original publisher's cloth binding the third is in the original publisher's paper covered boards in a custom cloth clamshell by Eric Sweet. Externally generally smart. Light bumping to the head and tail of the spines and to the extremities. The cloth bound 'Aesop's Fables Told to the Children' is a little worn and discoloured with marks and rubbing spine is faded. The paper covered bound 'Aesop's Fables Told to the Children' is a little rubbed with some marks spine is faded with small tears and loss to the joints with an ink inscription to the recto of the front endpaper. Marks to the rear board of 'Beasts Shown to the Children' with a small amount of cockling to the tail of the front board front hinge is starting but firm. Internally the cloth bound 'Aesop's Fables Told to the Children' is firmly bound paper covered bound 'Aesop's Fables Told to the Children' and 'Beasts Shown to the Children' are generally firmly bound.
