Five Weeks In A Balloon in Every Saturday: A Journal Of Choice Reading Bound Volume
Boston: Fields Osgood & Co. 1868. Book. Good. Hardcover. First American Edition. 4to. Entire Volume VI binding copy marbled front board detached but present rear board missing spine leather missing first and final few pages brittle and chipped NOT affecting the Verne piece a great candidate for the binder. This is the first appearance in English of parts of the author's first novel a few pages excerpted from the book of the same title that would be published by D. Appleton NY 1869 after having been published multiple times in France beginning in 1863. Verne who was relatively unknown in the English - speaking literary world was misidentified by the editors of the present piece as "M. Jules Berne." It is generally believed the editors thought this piece was non-fiction. From the editor's preface "I must begin by stating that I cannot guarantee the authenticity of the following remarkable adventures. I merely repeat them here confiding in the good faith of one M. Jules Berne. The Frenchmen who it is notorious are much better up in aeronautics than ourselves modestly leave the merit of the five weeks' balloon trip across Africa to the English." Very scarce and ready for restoration. Fields, Osgood, & Co. Hardcover

Verne, Jules
Five Weeks in a Balloon; or Journeys and Discoveries in Afrixa By Three Englishmen
New York: Waverly Publishing Co. Publishers 1875. This is Verne's first full-length novel originally published in 1863. This is a Near Fine copy of a scarce American pirate edition. The publisher is obscure and there is no publication date Quercus has rather arbitrarily chosen 1875 - 1890 as possible. The translator William Lackland is a fictitious person invented by Appleton for their pirate edition from 1869. Quercus speculates that this book may be a pirate of a pirate reprinting Appleton's version. Maroon cloth binding with titling in gilt on the spine which has faded to an even brown. Nicely blindstamped n the covers. Clean text; 265 pages. The textblock is toned which is typical for American pirates who would bind the cheap paper with attractive and decorative bindings. The only noted defect is a smudge or splash on the front cover. Pirate Edition. Hard Cover. Near Fine/No Jacket. 12mo - over 6¾" - 7¾" tall. Waverly Publishing Co., Publishers Hardcover
