Green cloth with black and gold impressing bevelled edges. Front cover shows Strogoff on a speeding horse. Cloth rubbed corners and spine tail worn spine head softened small dark spot on rear board. Plate opposite p. 174 has blue crayon slightly marking the picture itself. Stains to margins of pp. 316-317 also affecting surrounding pages. Other stains throughout worse towards rear. A few signatures jutting out slightly. Wrapped in mylar removed for photos. <br/><br/>Despite not being his usual science fiction this historical tale of adventure taking place during a Siberian revolt is considered by many to be one of Verne's finest novels. While not about science a scientific phenomenon the Leidenfrost effect is used as a plot device when he hero's evaporating tears save the hero him from being blinded. The story has been adapted many times for film TV and cartoon entertainment even adapted into a play by Verne himself and Adolphe d'Ennery. <br /> <br />The role of Chambers as secondary translator is interesting. During the translation by Kingston for the British edition it was discovered that one chapter "The Marshes of the Baraba" was almost untranslatable because of the knowledge of entomology it demanded. Chambers visited Verne himself at Amiens and had the author go over the text of this highly scientific section. He was impressed by Verne's library of insect books and the specimens he had collected from the French vice consular agent at Tomsk. <br /> <br />At rear is the novella "The Mutineers" followed by 6 p. of publisher's ads. A first printing with the 1877 date on the title page and published by Scribner Armstrong and Company New York. Illustrated throughout with frontispiece half-title vignette 90 black and white plates and a double-page map at the rear. This action-packed adventure is a departure from Verne's usual science fiction endeavors and many consider it one of his finest novels. Condition: 8vo. 377 pages and 6 pages of ads at the rear. The publisher's attractive green cloth pictorial boards with beveled edges stamped in black and gilt on the front and spine. Heavy edgewear with some fraying to the cloth corners bumped with cloth worn away at the tips. Spine ends chipped and frayed and some rubbing and a few scrapes to the back cover. A slight spine lean a previous owners name and small stamp mark on the front pastedown scattered foxing throughout and an unfortunate dampstain that runs along the upper and outer edge of a number of interior pages but does not impact the text block. Overall a good copy of this increasingly scarce first American edition.</p> Scribner Armstrong hardcover

Chicago: Donnelley Loyd and Company A decent copy of a hardbound edition published during the first year of American hardbound editions of this book 1877 although no date is shown in this copy. Beginning in 1876 Donnelley Loyd "began the wave of cheap Verne books" quoting from Taves and Michaluk "Jules Verne Encyclopedia" of 1996 with papercover books in their "Lakeside Library." This hardbound copy probably uses the same printing plates including the engraved illustrations from the local Chicago Engraving Company and the cover is stamped "Lakeside Edition." The translation into English is by W.H.G. Kingston--not acknowledged--which first appeared in England in December 1876. Scribner Armstrong and Company also published a hardbound version with this translation in 1877 and it seems reasonable to conclude that this particular copy from Donnelley Loyd is at least a copy of the same English language edition from 1877. It is probably a cheaper mass marketed version than the Scribner although I have not been able to compare the two different printings. This copy has definitely had a long history of readers with a stamp on the first free endpaper "Barkalow Bros U.P.R.R. Gen'l News Agent" which indicates at some time this book was sold by the news agent for the Union Pacific RR. A previous owner's inked name is on the same ffep dated 1931. A few of the upper corners of the pages are creased but the pages are otherwise clean. The scan shows the general condition of the hardbound cover with considerable wear at the spine and corners. All in all a firm copy of an early American edition of this Verne novel. 445 pages. . 1st Edition thus. Hard Cover. Illus. by Engravings by Chicago Eng. Co. Donnelley, Loyd and Company Hardcover

First American edition of this historical tale of adventure taking place during a Siberian revolt by the Tartars and what many consider one of Verne's finest novels. Octavo original cloth with Ninety Full-Page Illustrations. Translated by W. H. G. Kingston. Revised by Julius Chambers. In near fine condition. A nice example. Critics including Leonard S. Davidow consider it one of Verne's best books. Davidow wrote "Jules Verne has written no better book than this in fact it is deservedly ranked as one of the most thrilling tales ever written." Unlike some of Verne's other novels it is not science fiction but a scientific phenomenon Leidenfrost effect is a plot device. The book was later adapted to a play by Verne himself and Adolphe d'Ennery. Incidental music to the play was written by Alexandre Artus in 1880.
